ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Actually this is serious, sometimes the social ramifications can be dire. Have you tried Woodchuck Cider? It is a hard cider with an alcohol content similar to beer and not as wimpy as ordering wine would be. We find it here in the grocery stores and if you have a couple of clubs you go to they should be able to get it from their distributors easily... -
ARCHIVED My First Appointment W/gi Went Well!
ravenwoodglass replied to natalunia's topic in Doctors
Congrats on finding a good doctor, they are hard to come by. I am also glad to hear your going to do the diet no matter what the tests say. That really is the true test and your lucky to find a doctor that agrees. -
ARCHIVED How Bad Is Wheat In Shampoo?
ravenwoodglass replied to ErraticBinxie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Have you tried the Giovanni brand? Even thier 'golden wheat' shampoo is Gluten free. I find their products in the health food section of my regular grocery store and in my health food store. -

The inflammation reaches far more than just the GI systems. The gluten also effects and inflames other organs and tissues as well. This is most obvious in those of us with dermatitis herpeformis or seboriac psoriasis (sorry med terminology classes too far back for good spelling) and also with folks who have depression or 'manic' symptoms. It has been shown... -
ARCHIVED Osteoporosis Meds Fosamax And Actonel May Be Harmful
ravenwoodglass replied to YankeeDB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for posting this, I knew I was making the right choice when I refused these meds. If they would just diagnose us in childhood like they should we wouldn't have to worry about bone loss let alone take a toxic drug to counteract it. -

How could we forget the big number 7!!!! You have a real valid point. People don't understand how addictive this substance is. My DH was diagnosed a few weeks ago, I found a box of kellogs corn flakes on the counter and circled the malt in red pen. His response ' I really wanted corn flakes' me, 'well here's wegmans brand their gluten-free and safe'... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Just Have Celiac Only?
ravenwoodglass replied to Moongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think if we were all diagnosed as children, as we should be, we would have lots of people that would say 'Yea, only celiac' but since we have to be almost dead before they diagnose us most of us have multiple problems because of having this toxin acting on our systems for years. My goal is to have grandchildren of normal height and celiac related problem... -
ARCHIVED Dad Suspected Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to TCA's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would seek out another opinion or two on this idea that it would hurt him to try the gluten-free diet. I think that is ludacris (sp) especially as so many of his issues are so strongly celiac related. It sounds like he is suffering as badly as I was. I was misdiagnosed for almost 40 years, I didn't show up in blood tests and if the doctors had their... -
Having worked as a chef there is no way they can clean the grill or salamander while the restaurant is open and running. You may want to try asking them to do your food in a seperate saute pan, that can usually be accomadated pretty easily.

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination
ravenwoodglass replied to ogrestrength's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I won't even allow gluten products in my home, nothing not toiletries or laundry detergent, not glues or paints (I am an artist and keep them in a totally seperate area from my living quarters), not pet foods or litters. I gave up trying to eat at restaurants long ago. I still get problems with CC at times, usually from a processed food, which makes me... -
ARCHIVED Is It Too Late For My Son To Grow?
ravenwoodglass replied to mart's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some of us are meant to be on the small side, some of us on the large. My DS was in the 65th percentile at birth but dropped to the -10 by a year, and never had a growth spurt and I have hoped for 3 years he would at least gain a couple inches. I think the issue bothers me sometimes more than him. One thing I would suggest is that you have your DS... -
ARCHIVED Is It Too Late For My Son To Grow?
ravenwoodglass replied to mart's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have to strongly disagree with this. My DS was not diagnosed until he was almost 20 even though he had many celiac symptoms all his life and was diagnosed with failure to thrive at age 1. We will never know how tall he was actually wired to be. And for a man who is less than 5' tall being short can sure seem like a birth defect. You all with younger... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would be interested in the answer to this to. I suspect that it is just the symptoms mainly because it is the first symptom my son and I see. I believe there must also be a strong seperate genetic contribution cause only two of our Gluten sensitive family members have this. We should probably do the gene tests sometime just to see the differences. Interestingly... -

ARCHIVED Do Normal People Have This Problem?
ravenwoodglass replied to gointribal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree totally with this, I kept thinking I was getting CC anytime I ate potatoe chips or frys, thought I couldn't handle grain vinager because everytime I had a salad I got sick. Turned out to be a nightshade intolerance, potatoes, tomatoes and peppers. Almost every time I would eat something that had a chance of CC it contained one of the above food... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?

Yes the ataxia is gone. It is however the first sign that I have been glutened, the same thing occurs with my celiac son, my gluten intolerant daughter does not have the ataxia. At the time that I had my MRI I was suffering from ataxia so bad I could barely walk at times, severe migraine headaches, my hands had lost so much feeling I could hardly hang on... -

ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Radman, I just have to chime in here. I presented with primarily the neurological symptoms of celiac for over 30 years before the gut symptoms hit. From the time I was about 7 years old I have had to skim walls to know where my body was in space, I fell frequently, my lower leg reflexes were non-existant. By the time I was diagnosed my ataxia was so severe... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Radman, please don't worry about selfdiagnosis, in this instance it is not a bad thing, many of us have had to resort to that. I would like to suggest that you not try right away to replace your gluten foods with gluten-free alternatives. Wait if you can for a couple of months and eat Gluten Free by eating foods that are naturally free of the poison. ... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may want to explore the possibility of other intolerance. I had thought I was getting cross contamination from a lot of foods like potato chips, thought I couldn't handle vinagers because I would react to ketchup etc. After 3 years of off and on recurrance of symptoms I finally realized it was the potatoes and tomatoes. Everytime my DS would come home... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Please try to remember the long, painful and often humiliating road that so many of us took to get where we are. Very large numbers of us were belittled, disbelieved, and thought to be everything from drug seekers to mentally ill. It took a very long time for us to develop the distrust that many have of the medical profession in general. You say your symptoms... -

Agreed, I also hope he stays and learns and spreads the word. We need for all of us to be as vocal as possible and it certainly is not going to make this person stay and learn if people attack him directly. We all had a long learning process with this especially with his question. I know I found it hard to believe I even had to check shampoos and such... -

ARCHIVED Why Go Through Endoscopy?
ravenwoodglass replied to radman's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry to point this out, but you saw lots of celiac patients, they just were not diagnosed. And the idea that "most adults with celiac disease have low grade disease" is ridiculous! By the time I was diagnosed I had had 15 years of progressively worse D, my neurological system was so messed up I had no feeling in most of my legs, no lower leg reflexes... -
First of all I would not delete those emails. I would send them a copy of them and demand politely to be reimbursed for the tuna. I would also try to make sure my contact is with the head chef not the management or waitstaff. As a past head chef I can assure you of all the folks there they are going to be the most likely to understand your needs and comply...
