Incontinence Issue
ravenwoodglass replied to BamBam's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wish also more people could get past the embarrassment, my PT was very professional and did her best to make me comfortable. It wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. It's kind of like the gluten-free diet, intimidating at first but not so bad once you really experience it. She was the one who really pushed me not to give up and got me finally diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Hi Everyone, I Got Better, 20 Pages Of New Posts To Read
ravenwoodglass replied to Matilda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with you totally. I eat what I guess is called a paleo diet, meat and veggies and fruits. It took me a couple years to realize just what you are saying. I find the simpler the better and actually find it cheaper to eat just unprocessed stuff. -
ARCHIVED Why Are People So Mean?
ravenwoodglass replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Please be careful with the glues for the valentines, many are gluten filled. I always wear nonpwdered gloves to be on the safe side. Have fun making the cakes, and ya know if you don't tell them they are gluten-free I bet they won't be able to tell. Glad your in better spirits have fun with the valentines. -
Incontinence Issue
ravenwoodglass replied to BamBam's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am going to suggest that they talk to their doctor about a referral to a Physical Therapist that specializes in this problem. I had to deal with this issue and was surprised at how successful the therapy was. Between that and being gluten-free I have been able to regain control for the most part. -
When I was a kid it itched so bad I still have scars from scratching 40 years later. As an adult the itch doesn't seem as bad but they seem to 'burn more'. The sores still take forever to heal.

ARCHIVED Why Are People So Mean?
ravenwoodglass replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The problem may be that she is actually far from over it. She obviously cares but it can be hard when we can't do anything to help our children. It may also be hard to for her to deal with the genetic aspects of it. I know it was hard for me to deal with my kids getting this from my genetic soup. You've gotten a lot of good insight from a lot of folks, we... -
ARCHIVED Why Are People So Mean?
ravenwoodglass replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am so sorry you are having such a hard time right now. I have both had a Mom and been a Mom and 'we' can be hard to deal with at times. You have no way of knowing for sure why she is reacting this way, try not to take it too much to heart. The only thing I can suggest is not to discuss it with her anymore, hard as that may be. Talk to her about anything... -
ARCHIVED What If You Don't Go Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to jodikris's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Want to be around to see your grandchildren? My kids never got to, celiac killed my Mom first. I wish I had been diagnosed when my only trouble was DH, maybe I wouldn't live with the fear of cancer looming over me every day. Stop eating that poison and don't feed it to your kids. -
Yes, Many of the products they use not just gloves and toothpaste have gluten issues. Let your dentist know now so they can check everything from the gloves to the numbing products to the filling and mold materials they use. Make sure they actually check, my last dentist just wrote celiac in my chart and poisoned me at every visit. I switched dentists and...

ARCHIVED Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to elainefrance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wegmans stocks gluten free foods in their natural food section, but even better they label all their gluten-free stuff. If it has a G in an orange circle it is safe to eat. Thank you Wegmans. Eating gluten-free doesn't have to be expensive. The baked goods and so called convience food are what are pricey, if you try to stick with mostly fruits, veggies... -

ravenwoodglass replied to elye's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would have beer batter fryed shrimp with a side order of onion rings. I would make them (magic fairies, right?) get me a loaf of real sourdough bread and a loaf of crusty italian warm with a stick of fresh butter for dessert. Oh and I would was it all down with a coooold frosty mug of beer. -
ARCHIVED Cat Food...cause Of My Itching?-
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
To add on a bit also don't give cat food as a primary food to a dog, it can damage their kidneys. We switched all our kitties to the Felidae cat food and while it took awhile for our mega-cat (25lbs food addict) to get used to it my 2 others preferred it from the start. A bonus is the big kitty no longer eats till he pukes 3 or 4 times a day. It is hard... -
ARCHIVED Did Anyone Need To Decrease Meds After Going gluten-free?
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I went on my elimination diet I went off all my meds (5 different scripts), I told my doctor first and we had one that was an anticholorgenic mixed with valium that I had to decrease gradually. I have never had to go back on anything. It took a little while )1 month) for the joint pain and fibro to resolve but gluten free it was bearable. Interestingly... -
I used to be freezing all the time, I was never warm even in the summer. I am over 3 years post diagnosis and this winter I am actually able to keep the heat at a level that does not have everyone else sweating. I kept getting out of bed and turning down the thermostat until I realized I was setting it at 62 every night. I also have always run a low body...

ARCHIVED Ugg, Hit The Dreaded "worse Before Better" Thing
ravenwoodglass replied to dlp252's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The effects you are describing are the same first effects I get from being glutened. Be careful and check your OTC meds for gluten binders. It may well be from the Carl's trip, having worked in the restaurant business for years I will say if they had someone new they may have made a mistake with the fryer, and while these fryers (contrary to popular opinion... -
ARCHIVED My Mom Is Sick
ravenwoodglass replied to tbuehler's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the boards, you have come to one of the best places for information that I have found. I would start by having her call her doctor and go in for a celiac panel, before the surgery if possible. If she is celiac she will heal much more quickly gluten free. You may want to suggest she try being gluten free after the blood work is drawn, it won't... -
ARCHIVED A Couple Ingredient Questions Please
ravenwoodglass replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If there is a phone number on these items please call it before consuming to check for sure. I can't count the number of times the label looked safe and it actually wasn't. A bonus from doing this is that many times a company will send coupons and some have gluten-free lists they will send. I find for myself it is better safe than sorry. -

How are your B12 levels? At my worst my iron and B12 were low but the B12 was lower. After sublingual B12 supplements it was easier to get my iron back where it should be. Don't know if it would apply for others but it helped my brain fog and fatigue quicker than I thought it would. -
ARCHIVED Toaster Oven Should Be gluten-free
ravenwoodglass replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't worry about the oven but did replace my toaster. But something I didn't think of for 3 years was my can opener. I have a totally gluten-free household, except for pet foods. I bought a new one for people and kept the old one for the pets as no matter how hard I try it never really looks clean. I found I haven't had to deal with as many 'mystery... -

Great site although I may need another cup of coffee, I read the q in faq as a g and was really wondering why the U of M has a celiac site for those with an alternative lifestyle. Well I have had my early morning your an idiot moment for today! -
ARCHIVED Just Saw My Dr
ravenwoodglass replied to JLK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I went 2 weeks with just those foods, I was gut symptom free within a week. We added stuff in one at a time for a week. The food was added in in pure form, for example a plain baked or boiled potato with no butter or spices was eaten a couple times a day for a week. When no reaction was seen something else was added in in pure form. I added in wheat as... -
ARCHIVED Allergist And Food Allergy Scratch Tests
ravenwoodglass replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Scratch tests are for histamine or allergic reactions, gluten problems are an intolerance. They do not show up on skin testing. I am far from down on allergists, it was an allergist who actually found celiac in me, but not with skin testing. He did skin test, I was positive at that time for everything but beech trees, but more importantly he guided me through... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Gastritis/lymphocytic Gastritis
ravenwoodglass replied to Satchel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Has she found relief with the gluten-free diet? If you haven't tried it with her yet do. I won't go on a long tirade about doctors butttt------- if I trusted them I would still be very, very sick. False negatives are not rare, how many areas did they biopsy? Was it just the abnormal looking spots or did they go all the way into the small intestine and take... -
It may be from the powder in the gloves, many times it is not gluten-free or it could be the lubricant. The mucous membranes react to gluten, they use rectal suppositories and biopsy in many countries instead of the endo to diagnose for this reason. It is also why so many of us have hemmies when glutened. Some, myself included will get DH blisters from...

ARCHIVED Could I Be Anymore Pathetic
ravenwoodglass replied to Firegirl43's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are certainly not pathetic. It has been 3 years now and I still sometimes cry, especially at holidays when the rest of the family is out at a nice restaurant and I can't go. My DS is as sensitive as I am so he usually stays home with me and we make a extra special meal. You are perfectly normal as another poster pointed out it is a greiving process...
