  1. It sounds like his kidneys shut down, perhaps he had kidney disease also.
  2. I think I will still avoid these as they have been a source of contamination too many times. I would rather avoid the gluten than see another doctor and get some cream or pill to do away with the skin symptoms. Just my personal opinion but I'll continue to avoid ALL gluten.
  3. As a late diagnosis celiac who lives in fear of what this did to my body before we knew I have to say thanks for posting this. It gives me hope, something I have not had much of lately.
  4. I think they don't know much about celiac. I went through skin testing before my allergist set me up with an elimination diet. I showed up positive to everything except beech trees! However after becoming gluten-free those allergies 'went away'. The only thing I am still 'allergic to is my kitty's spit (my eyes will water when she sucks on my arm, strange...
  5. It did for me. My dr's attributed my dry eyes, mouth (so bad the first few bites of food were extrememly painful when the salivary glands activated), to one or more of my many different meds (none of which I have to take anymore). I didn't realize it was really the gluten until I had been gluten-free awhile and then got glutened.
  6. First off don't trust those blood tests unless they are positive. Way, way too many false negatives out there. Why not try the gluten-free diet for a couple of months? That is the real gold standard. You could also check with Enterolab for their tests they seem to be the most reliable. In addition I used to get drunk and have hangovers from NA beer...
  7. Thanks I am going to see about getting the book. I agree about the Enterolab tests They really seem to be the way to go right now. Hopefully when the new tests come out they will use it on everyone, not just those with obvious symptoms.
  8. I actually check cleaning products, especially dish soap. I use either Dawn or Dermassage and only arm and hammer soaps and dryer sheets. You may want to call and ask about each Neutrogenia product, I called about one of their shampoos and some are safe but many are not. Some have posted about a few of their products so a search might bring up something...
  9. Your lucky it is only your scalp and not your hair also. When I color I use Colorspa by L'oreal, it is a semipermanent color they also make a couple permanent colors that are gluten-free but I would call and double check to be sure. You could ask your salon to maybe get in somethig that is safe?
  10. So do Barley, Rye and Oats!!!!!!!! I love the way your dog's eyes in the pic look like they are looking at your post and going geeezzzzzzz. Thanks for an early morning smile.
  11. "You're right about Outback. They are very helpful and knowledgeable about the gluten free menu." Most but not all of them are, glutening have occured to my DS. He will no longer eat there. We have to be very careful in any restaurants. You don't know how long ago and how throughly your waitperson was trained. "Be careful when you eat...
  12. Thanks I was about to give up and mourn the loss of my one form of communication with the world. This new format had me reduced to tears. Thanks
  13. Was the B12 you were taking sublingual? This is absorbed by the mucous membranes and bypasses the intestines completely. Don't loose hope with the neuropathies, if they were caused by the celiac they most likely will heal, it just takes a long time. Welll over 6 months gluten-free for me, possibly shorter or longer time for others. Celiac is not the only...
  14. Could you please tell us the name of the book? To reply to the first post, as far as blood testing goes I trust blood tests like I trust doctors, as far as I could throw one. My DS is gluten intolerant and searching real hard for a doctor that will tell her her positive biopsy and blood test were wrong. Unfortunately she is having a great deal of success...
  15. Great Article. Thanks for posting it.
  16. I do think this is gluten related. I get this also and also tend to throw microscopic blood in my urine when it happens. My Mom was an undiagnosed celiac and died of bladder cancer. Makes me wonder if there is a connection.
  17. If you are not recieving communion you are not required to fast. The fast is intended to keep you 'pure' until you had recieved the host - if my memory for catachism is correct. I am assuming you are catholic and as the other poster said the wafer is not safe for you. You may want to contact your parish priest on another day and see if they accept a gluten...
  18. In my pet foods and can opener. I bought a new people only can opener and now check pet food labels as well as human. Wheat is the first or third ingredient in most of them, why?
  19. I hope they don't. I think we are the 'lucky' ones, (IMHO I know many will disagree) we have immune systems that are developed enough to let us know we are poisoning our systems. Also I haven't had a single cold since a few months after I went gluten-free, nor any tummy viruses or my usual yearly bronchitis and the first 2 years I worked in the school systems...
  20. Both I and my DS were diagnosed through dietary changes. The gluten challange made me too sick to go to the biopsy. My DD had a biopsy that showed changes but not full blown celiac.
  21. Have you considered having an allergist or other doctor guide you through an elimination diet? It can be time consuming but can help pinpoint other intolerances that may effect you. I was consistantly negative on testing and after being very, very sick for 15 years (daily D joint skin muscle and neuro problems) I was at last referred to a very old very...
  22. Your kidding right? Not worth the pain for anything.
  23. You basically did a gluten challenge. Now you know what will happen and that yes you do react. I agree though that you may want to go ahead and get tested if you feel that is the only way you can stay gluten-free. Please be aware that false negatives do occur though. For myself and our family we did both dietary challenge and blood tests and one endoscopy...
  24. I agree you need to get back to your endocrinologist. Have him do your thyroid panels again. Celiac can effect the functioning of the thyroid along with other systems. You may need a reduction in medication. My T3 levels were off for years, not a lot but still out of normal ranges - they are normal now. It is quite shocking the number of systems affected...
  25. Yep, skin sores and being off balance and depressed are my first symptoms, they show up within 24 hours of injestion. The big D and muscle and joint pain take a couple days.
