ARCHIVED Tournament Dinner - What Should I Do?
DarkIvy replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I third, or fourth the suggestion to contact the caterer. Worst case scenario, they won't be able to do anything at all. Bring your own sack dinner! I know it sounds kind of attention drawing, but sometimes it happens. If you really want to go, find a way to go and make it enjoyable for yourself. When people I don't know very well ask me why I'm eating... -
ARCHIVED Should I Deliberately Gluten Myself
DarkIvy replied to wilem008's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went gluten free on my own for about 2 months, which was enough to know that it went really well and I shouldn't ever eat gluten again. For various reasons, I decided to have an endoscopy done to make sure celiac was the cause, so I ate gluten like crazy for about 6 weeks. My bloodwork and endoscopy came back normal. I spent that entire 6 weeks being... -
ARCHIVED You Never Know What All Has Wheat!
DarkIvy replied to kim:)'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well geez, now isn't that a pain? I had never thought of that, but to be frank, since the fragrances aren't causing to many problems I'm not worried. I wonder WHY gluten would be sitting in fragrance, though... -
ARCHIVED Ladies, What Facial Wash And Moisturizer Do You Use
DarkIvy replied to cat3883's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps all over, including my face. You're supposed to dilute it before using, but I usually just pour a couple drops into my hand at a time and use it that way. It's not overly drying or anything, but it gets all the oil off. I've been using Alba Botanicals Sea Algae moisturizer for a while... it's not great but I'm waiting... -
I've never had to fight with a school system over this, but I know even at the college level this stuff can be a huge pain in the but. The cafeterias here only sort of provide gluten free options, and it's SUCH a joke. Luckily I was two months away from moving out of the dorms permanently when I found out that I couldn't eat it anymore, but the people I knew...

ARCHIVED You Never Know What All Has Wheat!
DarkIvy replied to kim:)'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I usually use Giovanni for haircare products... Tea Tree Triple Threat Shampoo and Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner are my favorites. My favorite lotion is Desert Essence Coconut stuff. My soap is Dr. Bronner's liquid, which is based on organic oils. I usually don't stray far from these products, as they work well and I haven't had any issues. My... -
ARCHIVED I Spaced Out And Ate Some Cake
DarkIvy replied to susanm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh no! My mom used to make tabouleh a lot as a healthy snack. I loved that stuff, too. When I was about 15 or so, a good five years before I realized I couldn't eat gluten, it made me really sick. I actually threw up, and I am one of those people that rarely, rarely, rarely does that. I never could enjoy it again after that. I really wish we would have... -
ARCHIVED I Spaced Out And Ate Some Cake
DarkIvy replied to susanm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know, I did something really similar once when I first went gluten free. My parents took me out to this pizza restaurant that does gluten-free pizza on request and we're all sitting around eating... it was happy hour, so my parents each ordered some beer. We live in an area that's kind of obsessed with "good" beer, so naturally I wanted to try it. Without... -
ARCHIVED You Never Know What All Has Wheat!
DarkIvy replied to kim:)'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh man! I hope you get to feeling better soon! That's actually one of the first things I learned to look for... but that's because my grandma was diagnosed with celiac ages ago and warned me. I promptly donated all of my shampoos, conditioners, lotions, self tanners, and makeup with gluten to my mom and my sister. I had to replace almost everything straight... -
ARCHIVED Lesson: Never Take Food From Strangers
DarkIvy replied to wsieving's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's such a bummer. It's frustrating when people say something is gluten free and then it turns out not to be. Why would they even take a risk like that with someone's illness? I would never offer food to someone if they had say, a dairy allergy and say with authority "hey, this is dairy free!" because I'm not good enough at identifying its sources to say... -
ARCHIVED Wow, People Really Don't Get It...
DarkIvy replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In retrospect, yeah, probably. It was the first time I'd ever flown alone, and I'd only taken one other flight in memory, and I was with people I knew and it was just to California. I had no idea you could even ask attendants about this sort of stuff. I probably thought about asking, and then decided against it, wondering what on earth they'd do about it... -
In this past I did some research on this when my boyfriend and I were planning on staying a couple days in Paris... I had almost no luck. My understanding is that they add flour to almost everything, and it's difficult to get chefs in many restaurants to care about this condition. It's considered rude culturally to be so picky, they think it's best just to...

ARCHIVED What I Ate At Walt Disney World!
DarkIvy replied to CalicoSue's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
That sounds fantastic! I really want to go! Someone I know (also a celiac) said the pizza kitchen under Space Mountain has a dedicated section for making gluten-free pizza. Did you get to try that at all? -
ARCHIVED Wow, People Really Don't Get It...
DarkIvy replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hahaha, it was a 14 hour flight... you betcha I got questions about the symptoms. Typically if people pick for details, I'm not embarrassed to say what's what. Tact is not my forte, in any case. This guy was a CREEPER, though. I was actually surprised by most of his reactions to the things I said, and I didn't feel comfortable doling out more details about... -
ARCHIVED Wow, People Really Don't Get It...
DarkIvy replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I generally expect that people will not be understanding, and that I'll have to defend my every (food) move for the rest of my life. A few gems include: "I thought you couldn't eat bread, so why are you eating that sandwich?" (In a nasty tone, too!) "It's gluten free bread." "What?! How do they even MAKE that?" Luckily a couple friends jumped... -
Can we add a Neiman Marcus to the gluten-free island? If so... when can I move in??

I've done the exact same thing with flavored potato chips before. It seemed like a harmless flavor, so I started munching on them. A little while later I started to think "hmm, I never actually bothered to read the label"... sure enough, there was barley something or other on them! Even more recently, I got sick off of tomato paste. I love the stuff...

Oh man, you just said how I feel about my boyfriend in the kitchen. Word for word, exactly what goes through my mind. I can't count the number of times I've had to remind him to clean up his gluten crap and wipe the counters down so I don't get sick. Or put the utensil that the cat was just chewing on into the dishwasher and NOT back into the clean...

A few months before I figured out that I couldn't eat gluten, I started getting bumps on my ankles. They were little red bumps that were itchy and painful, and they took a really, really long time to heal. The eventually left purple marks for several weeks after they subsided. I assumed they were just spider bites or something similar at the time, because...

ARCHIVED Celiac Belly Part 2: What Kind Of Jeans Do You Wear?
DarkIvy replied to munchkinette's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Citizens are by the same designers that started Seven, so people who like one brand tend to like the other brand, too. Sales are the best time to get designers, though, for sure. Even though I get a discount, I still wait until what I want is on sale or at the Rack... it's just not worth it to pay *that much* for jeans! elonwy, I beg to differ... I've... -
ARCHIVED Is Health Or Life Insurance A Problem With A Celiac Diagnosis
DarkIvy replied to Baddfrog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the past I've heard of this being an issue. I know there's another post on this section that strongly relates, so you should check that out. I tried to get an official diagnosis because I'm in college, and having a diagnosis would have meant I could get support from my school's disability center, which would have allowed me to get support from professors... -
ARCHIVED Life Insuance Frustration
DarkIvy replied to Jaimepsalm63's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh man, that must be so frustrating. That was actually one of the reasons that I was originally torn between trying to get an "official" DX and not... but in the end all my tests came back negative and it didn't make a difference anyway. My regular physician said she strongly believes that the tests are all inaccurate anyway, and has several other patients... -
Hmm... I'm not really sure. I've been wondering this myself. I know at my parents house, they are less diligent about washing off all the food particles before they put things in, so I have to rewash all the dishes I use before I use them by hand. I've gotten sick before because there were crumbs stuck to the bottom of my glass that I didn't realize were...

ARCHIVED Cheesecake Factory Spinach Dip
DarkIvy replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Oh geez, you're absolutely right. It's actually been quite a long time since I heard that the Godiva cheesecake was gluten-free. I tried it ages ago.... probably a year and a half ago, when I was still adjusting to being gluten-free and still getting sick a lot anyway. I remember when I ordered it, I asked to double check that it was gluten free, and the... -
ARCHIVED Hard Cider
DarkIvy replied to BelievinMiracles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I vote Woodchuck, too. I had no idea it was gluten free for the longest time, too. My boyfriend buys it a lot, and I just assumed it would have gluten in it, so I never went anywhere near it. One day he decided to read the label and he said "Hey, Liz, this stuff is gluten-free!" It says so right on the bottle, haha. Well now at least I can...
