  1. Jeez, I just watched the news reports, and it doesn't sound like they're close to having it under control yet. The winds last night were bad, and they're supposed to pick up again this afternoon. They did mandatory evacs for about 50 people last night, including a youth camp--- which I didn't even know was up there. They've got about 160 firefighters...
  2. I'm not sure... It's very overcast today, and harder to tell what is smoke and what is gray sky. So I'm not sure how under, or out of, control it is. But it has spread a lot since last night. It's come quite a ways down our side of the mountain already. Lots of air traffic --where we normally have NONE. We aren't under any flight paths, so the boys...
  3. Bah... a sleepless night for me. Dunno if it's the new meds or what. How a person can be so tired, and unable to sleep is beyond me. I just checked out my back window again... It looks like the fire did jump that dirt road, because I can see flames now instead of just the glow. It looks so eerie at night! And there are several emergency vehicles now...
  4. Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking! If I can rest up a little over the weekend, I'll feel up to doing more next week. If I can stay as busy as possible, it'll be better. The fire is pretty bad. The wind really kicked up this afternoon. It's pretty well out of control and it jumped all the fire lines they spent all morning digging. They had to pull...
  5. BTW, Tom, I meant to reply to you earlier and got distracted... I think I am going to quit Monday morning. I know I shouldn't put it off like that, but the kids will be back in school, and I'll have the weekend to rest up a little. I am flat out exhausted right now. Being sick so long is just wiping me out. I just want to sleeeeeeeeeep all the...
  6. Gahhhhhhh... The fire is completely out of these guys' control. We don't GET fires like this here, it's rare. It's spread right up to the top of the mountain now- it'll probably spread over to my side soon. We are safe, as far as the fire itself goes. We're not actually ON the mountain, we're a couple miles away. Our house is on a hill, and the mountain...
  7. jplain, I hope you do not leave. You just got here! You've made some very good points. We often have spirited discussions here, but I'd hope that we can respect each other's viewpoints.
  8. All I can say is, it would make me very nervous to leave it all up to the guide when you get there, who gets to decide how much he's going to go out of his way to accommodate you. In my mind, this is part of why we pay tour companies-- so that when we get to our destination, we don't have to stress about where we're going to sleep and what we're going...
  9. I agree about David Cook. I think he is just awesome. I was really bummed to see Amanda go last week, I was a big fan, sigh. I thought Carly did fantastic this week, I am surprised people didn't like it so much.
  10. Yeah, we're ok. There's a good safe distance between us and it right now. Hopefully it'll stay that way. I'll keep you guys updated.
  11. It shouldn't be. The smoke is yucky, though. They've got a ton of guys up there working on this... say a prayer for 'em because right now it's still out of control.
  12. HOLY HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!! My mountain is on fire! There's a freaking brush fire and one of the stations said 75 acres have burned since last night. This smoke, OMG, is not doing good things for me right now. This would be the mountain that is my gorgeous view off my back deck. I wish I could take a pic, I can't find my darn camera. The fire is on...
  13. There, is that better? Sometimes I make my kids call me that
  14. GAH! I just could not think of one single witty thing to write.
  15. Ok, I updated my av. It's kinda like a club jacket now. Where's Alex, make sure she knows!
  16. And oh! I remember Skybars from when I was a kid! It was my FAVORITE candy bar as a child. There were still a couple drug stores in NY that carried them. Then when we moved to North Carolina, nobody had them. Bah.
  17. Erm... Lately I've been deliberately NOT keeping track of how much I smoke. Too scary. Yes, more than a pack a day.
  18. Bless you! I didn't know about the chips, and totally forgot that K-toos (as they are affectionately called in my house ) are dairy free! Whew, there's something at least.
  19. There's a couple lists on this site that will help you. Click here for a list on UNSAFE foods. Click here for a list of SAFE foods.
  20. Yeah, the more I read about soy, the less I want it. I will definitely try the hazelnut milk! I gotta have my Erewhon Brown Rice and Berries. And now Rice Chex is gluten-free, yay! For the mozzarella... will it say "goat mozzarella" or something? I assume you can get this at Whole Foods? Goat cheese still has casein, right? But it's got less...
  21. Welp, I'm back from the doctor. The problems with my eye are directly related to the sinus infection, which I kind of figured since- 1) It didn't get any better on the pink eye meds, and 2) It hadn't spread to my other eye or to anyone else in the house. She did lots of hmmm'ing and uh-huh'ing while examining various facial orifices... noted that the amoxy...
  22. Gotta make this fast... need to jump in the shower, and then off to the doctor again. Hopefully will get some meds that work this time! Nikki! Paint can, noooooooo! Yet you laughed, how fabulous. Reminds me of a saying, something about dropping your keys in a river of molten lava. Let 'em go, cuz man... they're gone. Patti, cooking on the rug...
