  1. What great stories! Here is one about my daughter. A boy in her class (she is in 5th grade, this boy has been a bit sweet on her since Kindergarten) was having a birthday. He was planning on bringing in snacks for everyone in the class but didn't want to leave Victoria out (even though we have a yummy stash for her in the classroom). He had his mom call...
  2. (((Sarah))) Wow. That is some news. I'm glad you were able to get doctor's orders to go gluten free with Ezra. Does this mean he'll be able to eat gluten-free at school, too? I think first and foremost I'd see if 100% gluten free will make a difference (and I will cross my fingers that it will!!!). Maybe it is as simple as that! I know what you mean...
  3. I haven't been able to pinpoint a trigger w/ my DD, but looking back, I can see Celiac symptoms back to when she was an infant with strong, acidic poops that would literally burn her skin. She was always very wakeful--not a good sleeper and somewhat collicky. Traits that I just thought were unique to her now make me think those were Celiac-like. Fortunately...
  4. That's tough. Steroids and no gluten versus no steroids and gluten. That is a tough call and I suppose it depends on how badly you want a doctor's diagnosis. If it is important to you then keep her on gluten (don't forget, it's not just wheat you'll need to keep from her, but oats, barley, and rye as well) until you can get a biopsy from the dermatologist...
  5. It really isn't nearly as bad as it seems at first. It is very overwhelming to start, but we've been happily surprised at the things my daughter can eat. We keep our house gluten-free, mostly because we also have a young son who would be glutening everything if we didn't keep it that way (although he is starting to understand his sissy can't eat everything...
  6. we've never had a problem with swiss miss, but now that i know nestle says gluten-free i'll probably make the switch.
  7. My daughter had dry, scaley skin on her shins as well, for about a year or so before she was diagnosed with Celiac, so I'd definitely say it is something to keep an eye on. It started as a dry, flakey skin patch and then grew to be large, red, and inflamed. It was cleared up completely by removing gluten from her diet. If your daughter still has some...
  8. You need to have a steady diet of gluten in order for blood tests to be accurate, so you would need to do a "gluten challenge" of several months before any tests via blood or biopsy. You'd need more than just a donut or two, for sure! It's said that the stool testing is accurate for up to a year post-gluten-free diet. You could also request a gene test...
  9. Excessive urination can also be an indicator of diabetes (as is excessive thirst and always being hungry), so I would definitely keep an eye on it!
  10. I'll give that a try too! We can get the EnerG breads at our regular grocery store. $6 a pop, but at least to try a few days to get a feel for how she likes it. She really has a hankerin' for PB&J sammiches so I'm going to see if this does the trick. I need to buy a toaster. We tossed ours when she was dx and never replaced it.
  11. There is a Noodles extremely close to the CU campus in Boulder. My daughter had a performance there last Saturday and we stopped in for a quick dinner (we go to Noodles quite often near our house). I was worried with college kids there they might hose it up, but the order-taker-gal was really great and she pressed the "Alergen Alert" button 29 times for us...
  12. I have some of the gluten-free pantry mix I've been wanting to try. I don't have a good loaf pan so I might pick one up this weekend and give baking a try. I promised DD some "oreos" this weekend so I'll be in the kitchen figuring that out as well. I'll give the wraps a try as well. I've seen the F4L tortillas at our local store. She usually has homemade...
  13. Gosh--between the threads tonight on sinus troubles, cavities, and depression I'm reliving my daughter's dx all over again. My daughter gets horribly depressed when she's been glutened--especially if it is a really bad one or if she has multiple glutenings close together. I haven't noticed any "rage" with her but boy does she get sad and droopy. Doesn...
  14. Yep. I was a teeth-brushing Nazi, too, and my daughter has had endless cavities. She hasn't had a checkup since dx so I'll be interested to see. We did get her some of that Listerine that shows blue where more brushing is necessary, but they took it off the market because it wasn't safe for people with compromised immune systems. Kinda stinks because...
  15. Before my DD was dx, she had sinus troubles the whole time. One of her biggest symptoms actually. Her throat was red and sore and it hurt behind her eyes a lot. Not much helped. Like you said, Tylenol hardly touched it. Had to give her a decongestant + ibuprofin for any relief. The doc never saw any real infection, just irritation. She did give some...
  16. Honestly? He won't change and you should leave him. Quickly. With your child. If he were to do that intentionally, it would be the same as assaulting you with his hands. That said, try therapy, but I don't think it would work. He's poison the same way gluten is. Sorry to be so blunt, but his behavior is simply ridiculous and intolerable. It is simply...
  17. Oh, I meant to add that this is for school lunch, so it would be backed in the am (sometimes the night before) and eaten around noon.
  18. We tried a sandwich once this year on Food for Life brown rice bread. We really like that bread for toast, not so good in a sandwich. I think I defrosted it and then made the sandwich. Any other sandwich suggestions that work for lunch? She's bored of rice cakes and soup so I want to come up with something different for a while.
  19. melon might be good. it's soft to chew and easy to get sized for a 1yr old. a rice cake or rice cracker your child can eat (i don't know what might be safe based on your allergies as i've never had to deal with that) with some sunbutter. my son has a peanut allergy and LOVES sunbutter. perhaps you could buy some turkey breast in advance and cook a...
  20. thanks for sharing this recipe! dd has been craving graham crackers and the ones we found gluten-free were nasty nasty nasty. she loves eating graham crackers with jelly.
  21. So, were the results: Negative for Celiac on biopsy Negative for Celiac on blood tests Positive for Celiac gene? If so, I'd remove gluten and see if that improves the symptoms. If not, maybe remove dairy. Then soy. If symptoms improve then keep it up. If symptoms don't improve, then maybe work further with your doctor? Being positive for...
  22. I'd think the logical answer would be breastfeeding is best. If you have a balanced diet, your baby will be healthy from your breastmilk, even if it does have casein. It beats paying gobs of money for a special formula that is not nearly as healthy as your breastmilk. I'd venture a guess (I'm not an expert) that you wouldn't need to keep your baby CF unless...
  23. Fran, I hope you finally find out what has been ailing you. Perhaps you could get your PCP to refer you straight to a GI for the blood and endoscopy tests? Might have a better chance of running them concurrently. With my daughter, they drew blood and did the endoscopy on the same day. We got the results on the same day, and were complimentary in terms...
  24. I *love* that approach. Please do report back!
  25. You are absolutely correct. I know my daughter gets tired of me talking about food but you hit the nail on the head. The vitamins, the talks, everything. And yes, the rewards are awesome! I have a lovely, brilliant, happy child instead of a very sick one. I think a year ago I might have rolled my eyes at someone mentioning "gluten free." In fact, I remember...
