  1. I'm not in Detroit either, but I'm happy to help. Feel free to send a PM. You also might see if there is a Detroit support group for Celiac kids. Sometimes they are called ROCK (raising our celiac kids).
  2. Most are. I know Strongbow is, that's what hubby drinks.
  3. Amy's frozen meals. No problem with Chex or Kinnickinnick at all. Won't go to Chipotle because no one there ever speaks English, even though only one thing in the whole danged store has gluten (flour tortillas).
  4. There is a place called Noodles (I think there are a few locations in Boulder). You can get Pad Thai and many other dishes made with ride noodles. Just make sure to ask for "allergen aware for gluten." My daughter gets the pesto cavatappi with rice noodles quite often.
  5. Honey Nut Chex is now gluten free. There may be some old product in stock somewhere, but every box we've purchased in the last 6 months has clearly said "gluten free" on the front. Everything by Chex, except the Wheat Chex, of course, are moving gluten free as far as I know. In any case, barley malt extract is not safe.
  6. This place is amazing: Open Original Shared Link There should be one on every street corner. The gluten free menu is extensive and de-lic-ious!! There's even dessert!!!! Hubby and I have been a few times together. He usually gets gluten-free sweet and sour chicken and I get regular. I tried a bite of his gluten-free stuff last time, and it was just as...
  7. Pizza parties at school? I curse them!!! Then I usually get a take-and-bake gluten free pizza from a local pizza joint (which I feel very fortunate to have close by). Then I plan on working from home the next day so I can bake the pizza and drive it to her school. I make her "deal" on so many other occasions that I try not to let pizza parties slip...
  8. What about a taco or baked potato bar? Or maybe heavy appetizers like wings (hot or BBQ) with fries. You can pick up a fondue maker pretty cheap and do fondue, also--and it's tons of fun!
  9. There are definitely ways to do the gluten-free diet inexpensively. Seriously, fresh meats, veggies, and rice are not expensive at all, and that is the bulk of my Celiac daughter's diet. There's a few other gluten-free specialty products we get that are staples in her diet, but I've managed to keep our grocery budget about the same it was before she was diagnosed...
  10. I am such a dummy. I had no idea Tocopherol could come from wheat. My gluten-free DD has had a weird rash and just recently started wearing make-up. Maybe it's time to re-check those labels and make sure she's not getting anything she shouldn't. EEEEGAAADS.
  11. When Hubby went gluten free, he was definitely not a fan of the gluten-free beers. So, he switched to Strongbow cider. It has the same sensation as beer (bubbly, etc), but it's not trying to be something it isn't. He's been pretty happy with it. So happy, that I am replacing the kegerator full of beer we used to have with Strongbow for Christmas. The...
  12. My hubby is gluten-free and I am not. We don't keep gluten in the house (our daughter is also gluten-free), but when we go out, I will eat gluten. I try not to make a big deal of it and we always go to gluten-free-friendly eateries. When we go out for a nice evening that will involve a lot of kissing and other stuff later, I do stay gluten free and...
  13. Oooh! She loves Funions! I will definitely use those!
  14. We only have one family member who really doesn't "get" the whole gluten-free thing. My SMIL has to ask every time if she'll ever grow out of it and can't believe that "just a little" will hurt her. She plays along, but I can tell she just doesn't buy it, especially since my husband a non-Celiac gluten intolerant avoids gluten in addition to my DD12 who has...
  15. My daughter would like green bean casserole for Thanksgiving. I *love* the stuff but have never made it gluten free. Looks pretty easy to de-gluten according to mosts recipes, but I would love to replicate the frech fried onions. Any ideas or suggestions? Is there a cracker or something out there that might be a good substitute? If I were to make my...
  16. Hubby has switched to drinking Strongbow cider instead of gluten-free beer. He says it's too hard to think that it is "real" beer, but since cider is different, he's not constantly comparing in his head.
  17. We use the Kinnickinnick pizza crust as bread, also. We splash it with olive oil and then bake it for about 10 minutes at 400 degrees. Makes for delicious sammiches. Even the non-gluten-free people in our house enjoy them! Such good flavor!
  18. 2009 has been tough all-around. I wish you the best in 2010 for a healthful recovery and that you can find some peace with your father (although, if he is so happy, why is he telling you he might kill himself??). Maybe you could meet with your dad and tell him how YOU feel about that. He sounds like a real attention-needer.
  19. It is gluten free (and quite yummy!) but the risk of contamination exists if many people are plopping or squirting it on their gluten desserts. I would probably bring my own just to make sure it is safe. And hey, then you have a whole thing of Cool Whip to yourself!!! I luuuuuuuuuuv Cool Whip!!
  20. I would probably bring my own food as well (or, for my DD who has Celiac anyway). Perhaps call the hostess ahead of time and thank her for the invitation and that due to your dietary restrictions, you will bring your own meal. It doesn't do yourself or anyone else any good by trying to suffer through these occasions. You will feel empowered and enjoy the...
  21. Doing a lower carb diet like the South Beach diet will probably help. It focuses on lean meats and LOTS of veggies. Very easy to do gluten-free on South Beach. Hubby (gluten-free) and me (non-gluten-free) are able to easily follow the diet and have lost 50lbs and 30lbs respectively. Granted, we're fatties, but it does work.
  22. Both my kiddos scored the H1N1 virus before the vaccine was available. It definitely was "flu lite" and we decided to pass on the vaccine.
  23. That actually happened to my daughter today. It's only the 2nd time in two years she had a glutening at this school. That's statistically good, I guess, but frustrating and painful, nevertheless. It never even occurred to me about the disaster preparedness plan. I will definitely bring this up with the school!
  24. Sephora is a GREAT site for checking make-up ingredients. I use it often, and even though a little pricey, try to give my business to Sephora for doing so.
  25. I think it's perfectly fine and normal to miss the days of gluten gone, but it has to be some relief to your own conscience that you are not a crazy person and there really is a cause for all of the yuck you have been feeling.
