  1. I can't remember - is your dd dairy free as well? I was just talking to someone whose child had joint/leg "issues", which resolved after removing dairy from her diet. Not that I'd advise removing diary unless you HAVE to....I find it more restrictive in my dd's diet than no gluten!!! Rho
  2. How could someone have elevated Ttg/EMA antibodies without intestinal damage? I thought that's what those tests were indicative of/specific for. Am I wrong about that? Rho
  3. My mom lives west of Orlando in a small town called Ocoee. She's considering trying a gluten-free diet, but is wondering where she'll find gluten-free food in that area. She'd prefer not to have to drive through the terrible Orlando traffic to shop, so I was wondering if anyone here already knew of a good place to find gluten-free products in Ocoee, Winter...
  4. Both of my kids had a detox period when they went gluten-free. My dd (9) had headaches, periods of nausea (which were not one of her celiac disease symptoms), low energy, brain fog and weepiness. My ds (12) complained of a low grade headache for a few days, and had zero energy for about a week and a half. I think it's a normal response to giving up the...
  5. If your rash is dermatitis herpetiformis, then you *have* celiac disease. You could go to a dermatologist and get a biopsy. Dr. Peter Green says that if you have a positive DH diagnosis, you also have a de facto celiac diagnosis. You could press for a biopsy; your symptoms, along with your family history, sure make a case for celiac disease. You could...
  6. I think you should mention it to your mom, but you could do it in a way that lets her know that you like her outfit better than the "prom dress." When my brother got married, our mom wore a simple, classy looking floral suit. The bride's mother wore an awful frilly, shiny dress - much like a prom dress, lol - with dyed-to-match shoes. She looked more like...
  7. Hi Carrie! I'm relatively new here, also - not quite 2 months yet. It was my 9 yo dd who got us started down the gluten free path. Her "issues" were GI problems and decreasing energy level. My dd is a LOT better on the gluten-free diet (and she's had to give up dairy, at least for the time being.) We now suspect that my ds may have gluten issues as...
  8. Oh, I am SO going to have to try that! :-) Rho
  9. The part that burns me up about what that doc told you is that you're "damaging" her by withholding gluten. I'm with you - WHAT?!?! That's just gross misinformation. There's nothing she needs nutritionally that is *only* present in wheat, rye or barley. I also agree that the toddler diarrhea "diagnosis" is a crock. If she's having diarrhea, there's a...
  10. We've homeschooled for the last 4 years....2 kids, who were 1st/3rd graders when we started and will be 5th/7th graders when we start school again in September. It absolutely does seem overwhelming when you first start thinking about it, but it is more "doable" than you realize, truly. How old is/are your kid/kids? I'm in NY, so don't know about the regulations...
  11. Daveyboy - Just a quick thanks for posting about the Irish Coeliac site. I looked at that before we travelled to Ireland, and had the lists of grocery stores and gluten free food brands in my bag the whole time we were there. I love Ireland! It was my second visit, and if at all possible, it won't be my last. I haven't yet been to Dublin (we fly into...
  12. We're back from Ireland. It was a GREAT trip! We were in the west and south of Ireland (ranging north to Galway and south to Kinsale.) At several restaurants/hotels they had gluten-free bread available - in fact, on our first morning there, my daughter saw a "Gluten Free Bread Available" notation on the bottom of the menu and broke out in a huge smile...
  13. My mom had leg weakness as one of her major symptoms when she was hyperthyroid (Graves Disease.) Have you had your thyroid checked? Rho
  14. I hear you! That's exactly what we're struggling with right now. My f-i-l (who was an NIH scientist before he retired) is pushing us to get an official diagnosis for my dd. He's very uncomfortable with our "self-diagnosis." His argument was exactly what you wrote - that there could be "something else going on that we're missing." I've been racking my...
  15. I don't live in Ireland, but we're going for a visit later this week. Our trip was planned before my dd (and myself) went gluten-free, so I was worried. I've e-mailed every hotel that we're staying at to tell them of my dd's dietary requirements, and so far, have received overwhelmingly positive responses. They've all assured me that their chefs can accomodate...
  16. I've been wondering what this result *truly* means, also. My dd had a casein IgA of 21 on the Enterolab test....not that high, but she really did respond well when I took her off casein. I've read differing accounts of whether or not this is a permanent thing. Some say it's a cross-sensitivity that may clear up when the gluten sensitivity is no longer...
  17. I'm struggling with this right now. We never suspected that my dd (9) had celiac or gluten sensitivity - she had gastric reflux, and some other minor GI issues. I tried the gluten-free diet on the recommendation of a friend, whose wife and dd have celiac disease. He'd read about the growing connection between reflux and gluten. We were on the verge of...
  18. Definitely make sure you're getting enough protein. I think that most people need more than they actually eat....and they fill in the void with carbs (often empty ones, gluten-free or not.) That leads to wildly fluctuating blood sugars, necessitating more food....it's a vicious cycle! When I eat enough protein, I feel full for much longer and I don't crave...
  19. What a gorgeous picture! Congrats! Rho
  20. Margaret - My daughter (9) has been gluten-free/cf for around a month now. Her reflux symptoms and her gassiness started to decrease a bit during that first week, but didn't seem to actually disappear until the middle of the third week. I noticed, midway through the first week, that she had had a particularly bad day after eating a lot of dairy, so we...
  21. I called to check up on my favorite mustard. They had to research it, but I got a call back saying that is IS gluten-free! I'm doing a happy dance - this stuff makes the BEST homeade vinaigrette! Rho
  22. My 9 yo dd has been gluten-free/cf for 1 month. Her Enterolab results came back with elevated tTg, sensitivity to gliadan/casein and elevated fecal fat. My dh is questioning the results because Enterolab isn't "mainstream" and he now wants to take her to an "expert" (I don't agree, but that's another topic.) If we took her to a Dr. now, do you think there...
  23. The first thing that popped into my mind is that you can only "manage" the weekend if you have your own food. Can you pack some goodies for yourself - bite sized ones, such as nuts, dried fruit, Lara Bars....whatever you like and can eat. If you can nosh as needed, then at least you can keep your energy level up, keep yourself from getting too hungry, and...
  24. My 9 yo daughter's Enterolab results came back today. As I expected, she was positive for the Antigliadin IgA (21) and the Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA (20), and her fecal fat score was high (423) as well. I was surprised to see that her anticasein IgA was also postive (21) and - forgive me for my ignorance - am I correct in assuming that means no...
  25. I'm asking this question on behalf of my 9 yo daughter. Her main symptom, and the reason we put her on a gluten-free diet, was reflux. She had a dry cough, occasional regurgitation, and a full time "lump" in her throat (that's what she called it.) Within 2 or 3 days of going gluten-free, her cough and the "lump" had decreased; when I noticed that her cough...
