ARCHIVED Can Anyone Recommend A Good Facial Cleanser?
celiac-mommy replied to missy'smom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I use the Neutrogena Cleansing Bar for Acne-Prone Skin (the transparent bar) and the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub. I use the scrub in the shower in the am and the bar before bed at night. Its the best thing I've found so far, and it's affordable. I had clear skin until I turned 30, then my face exploded -
ARCHIVED Fudgy Brownies
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use 1/3 of what the recipe calls for. If I'm making cookies and it calls for 1c butter, I use 1/3c or about 6TBS. It's not really an exact #, but about 1/3. If the recipe calls for less than 1/2 c, I usually omit the fat all together. I've only been able to do this with the Pamela's baking mix. If I'm making banana, pumpkin or applesauce muffins, I... -
ARCHIVED Fudgy Brownies
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You sholuld be able to find it at whole foods. I buy in bulk from amazon. It's a baking mix with a variety of flours plus baking soda, baking powder, salt and xanthan gum. I use it in all of my baked goods. When subbing it in though, I reduce the fat (oil, butter, etc) by 2/3 because the mix has almond flour in it, so it acts as a fat. If you use full... -
I'll add mine, if that's OK. I make these at least once a week: 1/2c butter, melted 2c Pamela's baking mix ~2/3c buttermilk (don't dump all in at once, mix some in a bit at a time to make sure it's not too 'wet') 1/2c-1c sharp cheddar (depending on taste) 1 clove chopped garlic (I acutally use more) mix all, drop biscuit mounds (I just form them...

You can also do this with any other flour blend you like, you just need to add a little xanthan gum and 1/4 tsp baking powder. -
Oddly low fat, but not low sugar... 2tbs butter or oil (coconut is good!) 3 oz unsweetened chocolate-coarsly chopped (melts faster) 1 c sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 2/3 c Pamela's baking mix 1/2 c nuts--optional--I don't like them in my brownies... Preheat oven to 350 In double boiler, slowly melt chocolate and butter stirring frequently...

ARCHIVED I Need A Thorough List For Mil
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's funny, we did try this at Thanksgiving this year also. No matter how much I explained things to her and how I tried to get her to understand, she still thought things like: Dusting the turkey with flour before we put it in the cooking bag BEACUSE we could just peel off the skin and she wouldn't have to eat it (!!!!!!!) And then she refused to let... -
ARCHIVED Help! My Kids Are Going To Kill Each Other!

I took my kids with me to my Krav Maga class the other night because my dh was "stuck" on the 14th hole at the golf course They saw me keeping up with the big guys in the class--I asked my daughter what she thought later that night, she told me I was "amazing" The look on her face was all I needed. I think it was good for them so see me in that element... -

I made coconut shrimp the other night, they were SOOOO yummy and easy! 2 beaten eggs, I added a couple dashes of red curry sauce from Trader Joes 1 bowl with almond flour 1 bowl with unsweeteded shredded coconut cooked shrimp, thawed--I used the frozen, precooked, tail removed shrimp from Costco dip shrimp in egg roll in almond flour dip in egg... -

ARCHIVED Help! My Kids Are Going To Kill Each Other!
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks. I try to keep it educational and entertaining at the same time. Some of the shows they're allowed to watch--like Berenstain Bears and Franklin are good for the 2 y/o to learn a little lesson in a sweet way. It's hard as a parent sometimes. You want to make the right decision every time. I know I do the best I can in the moment. It's just a lot... -

The book idea is great. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to offend her by giving her gluten-free for dummies... My husband has been the one mainly communicating with her. I understand that if you aren't living with this on a daily basis, you really have no complete understanding of what it's like, no matter how much you read. It's all the... -
ARCHIVED Help! My Kids Are Going To Kill Each Other!
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We go to church, I feel as though we are a religious family with good values and morals. My kids are 2 and 6--the 6y/o is very caring, sensitive and respectful of others. My 2 y/o is a busy little boy. We work with him a lot, and he does seem to be sensitive to other's feelings. If someone is upset, he's very quick to go crawl in their lap and sit quietly... -

I'll start out by saying--no way in hell am I going to let my 6 yo go to Idaho for 2 weeks this summer by herself. 2 reasons--#1-I'm not ready to let her spend more than a weekend away-I told my MIL maybe next summer, #2-they don't understand this "Celiac thing" but they say they are willing to learn. My dh told her it's not just buying the right kinds... -

Mine get no more than 1 hour a day, and they are only allowed to watch PBS kids, some discovery channel and limited Noggin, plus approved videos. I am aware of what they're watching, I can hear what they're watching and they're never alone to watch TV by themselves. No cartoon network or even disney (most) in my house--too much attitude! I've been... -

Glad I could stop the screaming in your house, even if only for a second To check out the classes to see if it's offered in your area, go to kravmaga.com and there's a map of authorized/qualified classes. It's the most amazing thing I've ever done-the best workout BY FAR. It's fun too! -

Sarah, I feel your pain, sounds just like my house I put my ds to bed at 545 last night because he was so out of control and I couldn't handle it any more. I take a martial arts class twice a week (Krav Maga) so thank God I had that last night, because I can go kick the crap out of someone else (and get mine kicked too) and burn a million calories... -
ARCHIVED Going gluten-free
celiac-mommy replied to mcs1984's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Even our son's biopsy came back normal, but the key is, your dr. told you to remove gluten, so that's all you have to tell the preschool--Dr's orders. Our son had such a significant positive dietary response, that our gastro diagnosed him in spite of what the biopsy results said. Our daughter was diagnosed from a glaringly obvious biopsy, so we tell our... -
ARCHIVED My Son Has A Rash.
celiac-mommy replied to Rook's Mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My dd just had a massive reaction to something, although no gluten symptoms, so I think it was just a contact rash of some kind. It was all over her neck and shoulders and itched like CRAZY! I just used some Walgreens brand hydrocortizone cream before she went to bed and the next morning it was 80% better. No longer inflamed, just brownish and very dry... -

I will for sure be implementing the chores for the fights that I have to break up. I do try to let them work it out, but when they start beating on each other, I intervene. The 2yo doesn't get it (the chore thing)-unless he's totally playing me, which is a definite possibility My dd had to clean her walk-n closet yesterday and my son had to clean up...
