  1. We have one of these 2, but a different brand. Does poaching and hard boiled eggs. Also steams some canadian bacon to add to it. Grab a piece of fruit and you've got a complete breakfast in exactly 5 minutes!! (I timed it )
  2. I've found that it really depends on the brand. I agree that the first hour after the dryer is a little too tight, but after that it's usually perfect. If they fit perect right out of the dryer then they're usually too big after that hour. If you're buying the same brand and it's happening every time, maybe go up a size. You have to try to fit the widest...
  3. I have 2 celiac children. My dd had stopped growing and had massive abdominal distention, enlarged liver and spleen and horrible stomach cramps. Within a week of going gluten-free, it was as though there was nothing wrong with her. It was amazing. It's been more than 2 years for her now and it's 2nd nature to her, she's growing and healthy and very responsible...
  4. I think we may be in the minority, but since we've gone gluten-free, we are actually saving $$. We were eating out about 3x a week, now maybe 2x per MONTH. I don't buy a lot of the mainsteam gluten-free products, just a lot of whole foods-fruits, veggies, lean meats, cheese, yogurt etc.. The small amt of packaged stuff I buy, I get online at a/m/a/z/o...
  5. Never a problem!!! I'm here to help, everyone here has helped me so much, so whatever i can do, I'm there!
  6. Something new we did today was the Brazilian Cheese breadrolls that was posted here cut into strips and marinara sauce (heated and put into thermos). It packs really well and you get protein with the cheese and veggies in the tomato sauce--I hide LOTS of veggies in my sauce.
  7. I posted this in Feb 08: I just talked to 'Dave' in customer services at Starbucks (1-800-23LATTE) and he said that the only gluten containing items they have (besides the bakery/food items) are the frappaccino's--vanilla bean and chocolate chip, the malted frapp. isn't carried anymore and the egg nog they use during the holidays has trace amounts of gluten...
  8. If the ECHO comes out normal, it should rule out any structural defect--but it is totally dependant on the person doing the exam as well as the quality of images obtained. If the images are poor (varies from person to person but usually dependant on body habitus) there may be an abnormality or defect missed--severity of a valve leak or stenosis, PFO (hole...
  9. Corbett or Hawthorne Fish house. The best catfish and sweet potato fries ANYWHERE!! Corbett's has a coffee shop next door that's supposed to have good gluten-free pastries/muffins. Be advised that New Cascadia is just a little kiosk ouside of Trader Joe's. It opens at 11, and you might want to get there before noon to make sure you have a good selection...
  10. All of their hot drinks are OK--the syrups are all gluten-free. Most of the frappaccino's are too, but there's 1 or 2 that aren't so you have to worry about cc. We just stick with the hot and iced drinks and leave the blended alone.
  11. We use the Tinkyada macaroni and fusilli (which is my favorite) and before Celiac disease (hard to remember sometimes!) we ate a lot of whole wheat pasta, so the best substitution I've found is the quinoa spaghetti noodles. The one thing I've learned is to only cook for 1/2 the time for any gluten-free noodle and then check-if not done, add 1 minute at a...
  12. My background: cardiovascular technologist Most people who have palpitations notice them more in the evening. Most likely this is because you're more active during the day and not really aware that it's happening. A lot of my patients notice it especially when they lay on their left side. Since the heart sits in the left side of your chest, when you...
  13. You'll probably get a bunch of different ideas, but if it were my kid (and we did go thru this with our son), I'd just take her off gluten too. See how she does and after a few weeks, if she's doing better, re-intruduce ONE of the allergens to see if there's a reaction, then after another week or 2 re-introduce the other.
  14. My DD vomits if she breathes in gluten--bakery, play-dough making at school, etc... and has D if she actually eats something. GI symptoms can vary sooo much from person to person. Hope they get it figured out soon! Good luck!
  15. Is 100% fruit juice OK? You could add a little apple juice instead.
  16. I made this in the crockpot yesterday and the meat fell apart when I touched it. It was soooo good: Quickly brown pork ribs in lightly oiled pan Throw in crock pot, add 1 onion sliced In bowl, combine: 1/4c gluten-free soy sauce 1/3c ketchup 1tbs mustard 3tbs brown sugar 2 garlic cloves minced dash pepper Dump over ribs, cook high for ...
  17. I bake 2 of these loaves a week (Pamela's). I follow the ingredient directions for oven (little different than the bread machine recipe), I always use the paddle attachment on my Kitchenaid (the whisk might put in too much air causing it to fall....) I put in my metal loaf pan (sprayed with Pam) and rest it on top of a heating pad set to medium for an hour...
  18. I used the water trick yesterday, placed the giant skillet under the loaf. I had to move the rack with the bread on it halfway thru cooking because it rose too high and was hitting the top of my oven--never had that happen before. It shrank only a little after coming out of the oven, but it has the best texture I've ever gotten from that mix!! (Pamela...
  19. I'm considering the same thing for all those reasons you listed above. It's been a dream of mine to have my own bakery--maybe someday, but I'm seriously thinking outsourcing instead for right now. I've heard it's kind of a pain to get your home kitchen certified.... Anyone know for sure?
  20. I haven't personally used it, but my best friend's husband is a trainer and he uses it all the time. He LOVES it!! It's always being used at the gym so it's difficult to get a turn!! If you want tot try it out, find a mainstream gym in your area that has one and see if you can get a day pass to try out their gym (but really just the machine
  21. If you have Tillamook yogurt in your area, that's the best (Oregon company). All natural, no gluten, you can pronounce all the ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup, etc... Otherwise, I buy Mountain High and Nancy's--also all natural.
  22. What's your budget? For a modest budget, the Nordic Track's are good. If you can afford it, Precor's are the best, or the Bowflex treadclimber. I have a Proform and it works OK and has the 10% incline, but it's REALLY loud which is a total pain, but they might not all be like that.
  23. I'm so pleased you liked them as much as we do!!! It took me MANY batches to come up with that one (and 5 extra pounds to work off)
  24. I have the same issue! I try to give a snack right before we need to leave and then I stash stuff in the car for emergencies. LARA bars, Envirokids bars--stuff that doesn't crumble or super sticky. If I'm going to the grocery store, I'll bring little bags of something--trail mix, cereal, dried fruit etc... for them to eat in the cart. Drinks are in closed...
  25. Where are you going when you hit the west coast? Those of us over here can point you in some helpful directions! Pamela's baking mix will make you some fantastic treats to take with you on your trip too. If you visit the website you can find a lot of recipes. I bake almost everything with it. It makes the BEST chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin bread...
