  1. This is funny. Instead of "rat poison" I like to use "dog poop." You don't eat it. You don't touch it. You don't eat anything that has touched it. You don't eat anything that it has touched. You don't eat with or cook with anything that has touched it. Etc. You get the idea. Dog poop has that ick and eeuwwww factor that...
  2. Something in them isn't working for me. I am totally OK with chocolate (Thank God! ) dairy and peanuts, so now I don't know what is causing the problem. Too bad, because they were a good snack.
  3. I can't find the post, but somewhere someone said that rubbing alcohol deactivated the gluten protein. Wouldn't just boiling some in the pan make the pan OK to use? And would that not work for colanders and wooden spoons as well? A bottle of rubbing alcohol is a LOT cheaper than a whole set of new utensils!
  4. In October I was telling the Biblical story of Joseph to a group of young children. I bought a bundle of what was probably wheat at Ralphs for $1 to show them what a sheaf looks like. Ralphs was selling it as a Halloween decoration, so the timing was perfect for me! I tried really hard to be careful, but I guess not hard enough because I had all my...
  5. The bag of Dark Chocolate M&M Peanuts in my fridge lists dextrin as an ingredient. I am not amused.
  6. There are protein molecules in the oil? 1) That doesn't sound very pure to me! 2) Why, if wheat is the source, is it not required to list it as such?
  7. Also look into a product called Benecalorie. It is specifically designed to combat unintended weight loss, is lactose-free, and suitable for gluten-free diets. It isn't easily found locally, but there are many places you can buy it online. I have not personally used it (losing too much weight is SO not my problem!) but I am told there is no after-taste...
  8. What's the difference between these and GlutenEase? There have been all sorts of posts on GlutenEase. Why would either of these two new products make consuming gluten any safer than what is already available? Are these just attempts by the pharmaceutical industry to capitalize on an untouched market? Am I missing something here?
  9. It's ba-a-a-a-a-a-ack!
  10. Better late than never? My experience is the typical Chinese Restaurant (I grew up eating Cantonese in Seattle coached by my dad's co-worker who was an escaped refugee!) is all sauce is thickened with corn starch and for all intents and purposes, not an issue. However, most restaurants use brands of soy sauce that contain wheat, and because soy sauce...
  11. "Got more gas than your car? Think Celiac." I vote for this one! Now if we could just think of a way to turn all of that "self-produced gas" into some sort of bio-fuel and capitalize in it . . . . .
  12. This should be of interest to every parent of a child with any type of problem the school system is unwilling to deal with. The reasons why you need to go to bat for your child may vary all over the place but the need crops up everywhere. The guest on these 2 broadcasts gives a lot of great info and advice - from the perspective of a teacher as well...
  13. I'm happy to report that the corn starch worked. The bag did not blow up and the turkey came out just fine. I guess this is one case where corn starch can be used as a substitute for flour!
  14. Yes, thanks for posting this. My family likes chili and cornbread, but that hasn't been an option lately. Now it looks like we can have that again!
  15. I tried the search feature but the new format wasn't helpful. Also, it's a bit too late now because I already did it but do you all just use corn starch instead of flour in the turkey oven bags? Please say yes!
  16. I have to say I miss the old style search feature - and I'm a newbie here! I really used that feature the way it was. the way it is now isn't useful to me at all.
  17. Last week I did a favor for a customer that was really no big deal - just kind of an extension of my job. She was so appreciative that she brought me a See's Candy Gift Certificate! I sent See's an e-mail because there is no mention of gluten on their website. This is the answer I got. Thank you for visiting Sees.com. In response to your request...
  18. I recently contacted "Inter-American Products" which seems to manufacture just about everything for just about everybody about Ralph's Lightly Salted rice Cakes. I received this back from Kroger. I thought it was very informative. Thank you for contacting The Kroger Co. regarding the gluten status of the Ralphs Brand of Litely Salted...
  19. Back-track an entire 24 hour period. It could be something she is ingesting earlier. I once heard of a girl who got sick in church every Sunday. After a great deal of detective work it turned out she was having a delayed reaction to the chocolate she always ate at the Saturday afternoon matinee. Also, does she have the problem on weekends? You...
  20. Different strokes for different folks! I'll take Pollyanna-ish yogurt commercials and stupid talking cow commercials over, shall we delicately say, "disfunctional body part" (one in particular) commercials ANY DAY! If the commercial has to say any variation of "ask your doctor" then please "ask your doctor" in his or her office and not in my house...
  21. Drink more fluids. I realize this causes a whole new set of problems - especially at night - but the only time I get those calf and toe cramps is when I have not been drinking enough fluids.
  22. Thanks for posting this! I didn't get evacuated either this time or 4 years ago, but I will definitely keep this list - and the items on it - on hand because no doubt there will be a next time! A friend whose husband grew up in Miami told me the Cuban way to eat chili is with rice. I have tried the Hormel Chili with Minute Rice (cooking is not my thing...
  23. I am in San Diego County between fires and actually much better off than 4 years ago when I was directly down wind. This year I could see stars and blue sky and breathe and everything! Four years ago I couldn't do any of those things. However I have friends who have been told the fire fighters hope to hold the fire a mile from their home. Prayers are...
  24. A thousand pardons if I offended anyone. After reading every post I honestly believed what I said was on topic. I only meant to offer hope and encouragement to anyone struggling with the issue spiritually, emotionally, or physically. If anyone took it any other way, I am truly sorry.
  25. I agree you did not over-react. You needed to get your family out of there ASAP. However, people who have no first hand experience with allergies and allergens are only ignorant - not mean or stupid. In there minds, they "have never heard of such a thing." This is definitely a "teachable moment" and your chance to educate the parents, teachers...
