ARCHIVED Son Complains Of Leg Pain
home-based-mom replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Commercial bubble baths are prime sources of UTI. Pour whatever you use to wash him with under the running water as the tub fills up and it should provide safer bubbles. I had lots of leg "growing" pains as a child and have learned here that I could have been gluten intolerant as far back as then! You'll know more after seeing the doctor. -
ARCHIVED Have Gluten Free Products .. How Can I Sell Them?
home-based-mom replied to Foyle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Good idea. There is an internet marketer named Willie Crawford who does a handy business on the side with a collection of recipes aimed at a niche market. You could be next! Otherwise, look into the insurance / business license / health certification stuff, and then see if your local health food stores would be interested in carrying fresh... -
ARCHIVED Family Sues Mcdonald's Over Undisclosed Ingredient
home-based-mom replied to Respira's topic in Publications & Publicity
Everyone makes good points. The responsibility is ultimately our own, and my personal rule of thumb is, when it doubt, don't. The news article (never unbiased, imho) doesn't tell us how long since the child had been diagnosed. Who cares? The longer since diagnosis, the longer the family would have had to learn who to trust and who not to trust. The... -
ARCHIVED Family Sues Mcdonald's Over Undisclosed Ingredient
home-based-mom replied to Respira's topic in Publications & Publicity
It has been posted elsewhere that restaurants have a responsibility to serve safe food. They also have a responsibility to inform people of all ingredients in the food they serve, so people can make an informed decision about whether or not to eat the food served by the restaurant. If I am reading this right, what McDonald's website says now is not what... -
ARCHIVED Stomach Virus I Just Can't Shake
home-based-mom replied to HAK1031's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Jello? Popsicles? Suck on ice chips? All that hospital stuff? -
ARCHIVED Sharing A Heart-warming Story.
home-based-mom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What a great story! Sometimes kids can just melt your heart! It kind of makes you wonder why, if a kid in kindergarten can get it, and my husband's 90-year-old aunt can get it (she gave me her mother's rice stuffing recipe so I can stuff my next turkey) WHY CAN'T THE MEDICAL AND RESTAURANT PROFESSIONALS GET IT! -
ARCHIVED Hershey's Mini Almond Joy Candy Bars
home-based-mom replied to Joni63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought I had read that, too, and I can't remember where, either! Anyway, info on Open Original Shared Link that I referenced above appears to refute that. -
ARCHIVED Hershey's Mini Almond Joy Candy Bars
home-based-mom replied to Joni63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There seems to have been a lot of conflicting information about the mini sizes. Personally I can't understand what difference the size the piece of chocolate is cut into makes as far as what ingredients it might have, but with at least some manufacturers I guess it might. Anyway, here is a list that might clear some things up: Open Original Shared... -
ARCHIVED Britney Spears & Dairy Allergies
home-based-mom replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've thinking about this, too and wondering the same things. Unfortunately I don't think it would do any good to contact her dad, doctor, or manager with our (well founded ) suspicions. The reason I say this is because a local pastor with a world-wide radio ministry had cancer a few years back. During his recovery he received many mailbags full... -
ARCHIVED And The Winner Is....
home-based-mom replied to Mom23boys's topic in Publications & Publicity
No, we have to wait for MARTHA to come down with celiac before we can expect a special magazine for food allergies! -
ARCHIVED Today's New York Times
home-based-mom replied to Eriella's topic in Publications & Publicity
Eating vegetarian is a choice. Eating gluten-free is not. Starting with a teaser about gluten intolerance followed by 2 pages of vegetarian choices really sends the wrong message. -
ARCHIVED Found Me A New Celiac Friend!
home-based-mom replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have friends who have close family members who are dealing with severe intolerances (life threatening in some cases) and even though I do not react anywhere near that strongly to gluten, they totally understand why I avoid gluten like a vampire avoids the sun! It is nice to share grumbles, have someone understand where you are coming from and not... -
Only 3 dipping sauces are listed as gluten free. Moreover, this statement alone makes me think that we should all cross Arby's off our lists indefinitely. "All of our foods are prepared in a common kitchen, and all of our fried foods are prepared in a common oil."

ARCHIVED And The Winner Is....
home-based-mom replied to Mom23boys's topic in Publications & Publicity
Several thoughts. The rules were that you could vote once per day. Some people more than abused that and could have very well skewed the percentages. Once the multiple votes were weeded out and eliminated perhaps the final result is not what we were looking at when the percentages were taken down. We really don't need more recipes. This forum... -
ARCHIVED Eating Well Does Not Have To Be A Lot Of Work!
home-based-mom posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some people view food preparation as creative expression. Others use it as therapy. I find it to be a necessary evil and tedious drudgery. Nevertheless it is still possible to have decent meals without much work. For example: A recent dinner was stir-fry. The veggies were bought in a package - already chopped up by someone else. The meat was... -
ARCHIVED Ok Not Eating Vitamins While Pregnant
home-based-mom replied to Yenni's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I really hope this works for you as it is *SO* important to have the folate in you before conception. Here is a link to the FDA's web site. Open Original Shared Link This page also has a link to another page which is a bunch of links to even more information! Obviously getting vitamins from what we eat is best, but we know that... -
ARCHIVED Group Snack Ideas?
home-based-mom replied to slee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for this thread. We had three 8-9 month old baby boys in the nursery this morning. It's just a given that their hands and mouths and slobber are all over everything and it was quite tricky keeping myself safe. I will discuss these items with the director of children's ministries as soon as she gets over the flu! -
ARCHIVED Malabsorption Question - Should I Crush My Supplements?
home-based-mom replied to LoriG's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been using a liquid one (which I can't specify because I also sell ) for several years and I really like it. I see no reason to go back to pills, or deal with the hassle of powders or crushing pills into powders. If your system is only absorbing very little then I would guess that either a liquid or a powder that dissolves into a liquid "on... -
ARCHIVED Super Ez Guideline Help Please!
home-based-mom replied to Mom23boys's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Let me echo this. People just do not think about what they eat or what it is made of. I have one friend - bright but very busy - who I have reminded over and over. It is starting to sink in. If something like this has never been part of your life, it takes time to wrap your head around it and all the implications. Learning "the hard way" aka "screwing... -
ARCHIVED Do "ensure" Meal Replacement Shakes Contain Gluten?
home-based-mom replied to oldskool's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many people get tired of Ensure. If you need additional nutrition, look for a product called Benecalorie. It isn't always available locally but can easily be found online, and is gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Help My Son's Broken Spirit
home-based-mom replied to nattrail's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Unfortunately the damage has been done in the minds of your son's classmates. Homeschooling should definitely be considered as an option. Kids *are* mean and words *do* hurt. There was a family at my church whose children were bright but just "marched to a different drummer." The other kids at school basically ate them for lunch and totally destroyed... -
ARCHIVED Chicken
home-based-mom replied to dbmamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Go to Costco and get those gloves meant to be worn for medical exams or diaper changes in daycare centers, etc. They are not very expensive and when you are done cleaning up, toss them. Before you put them on, put some lotion on your hands; it will soak in while you work! -
ARCHIVED Roommate Issues Pt 4
home-based-mom replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
This soon-to-be former roommate apparently thinks Lisa is a flake, and therefore fair game for any and all abuse. A typical bully if there ever was one. I think as Lisa moves on, this is her opportunity to demonstrate that she has a lot more class than her soon-to-be former roommate. So Lisa, don't even think of stooping to her level. Keep your chin... -
ARCHIVED New Update On Annika
home-based-mom replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If garlic does turn out to be the problem, be careful with all members of the Allium genus of plants including onions, leeks, chives, and shallots, as well as garlic. Also watch out for all kinds of lilies - same family. My mom was so allergic that not only could she not eat onions, garlic, etc., but she had to avoid church and grocery stores around Easter... -
ARCHIVED What The Heck Is Whey?
home-based-mom replied to Alou123's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Remember "Little Miss Muffet" eating her curds and whey? "Curds and whey" is just cottage cheese. You should be able to figure out which part of the cottage cheese is the curds and which part is the whey.
