  1. Blood work is notoriously inaccurate - I think someone posted as much as 30% false negatives? Never a false positive, though. I have not had tests so hopefully someone else will jump in with more testing info. Definitely do research here on the forum for other manifestations of celiac and also for tests others have done. There is some incredible...
  2. How were you tested? Blood work? Biopsy? Genetic? Have you gone on a gluten-free diet or put your daughter on one? Without going into details, there could be malabsorbtion issues at work here.
  3. Yup. I was in a meeting one time and we were discussing a previous mantra of "safety, service, budget" and I said "what was really budget, budget, budget." The guy said (no kidding) "No it wasn't budget, budget, budget - - - well OK it was budget, budget, budget." The left hand doesn't have any idea what the right hand is doing because...
  4. Not to throw a wrench into the discussion, but I do eat the packets of instant oatmeal from WalMart without problems. Others cannot eat oats at all. So you answer is a definite maybe, maybe not!
  5. Must make for an interesting scramble behind closed doors for the companies that purchase from multiple suppliers and don't seem to have a clue ~ or at least won't admit to having a clue ~ what is actually in the product they ship out for public consumption!
  6. How about having the doctor INSIST that you husband come to the next appointment? As much as it churns my stomach when men don't listen to their wives but readily except the exact same info from a near or total stranger (and my husband is on that list! ) you husband may be more receptive to what you have been saying all along if the words are coming...
  7. I agree. Many main stream items are naturally gluten free or labeled gluten free. You may need to switch from Hunts to Heinz ketchup and stuff like that, but it is still a main stream item. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store where the meats and produce are rather than the middle where all the processed stuff is. Decide what you are going to substitute...
  8. Why does anyone lick envelopes??? Glue Sticks are your friend!
  9. At 10 pages per day, Vicky will finish reading that puppy in . . . .SIX MONTHS! I started reading it when I first joined and was fascinated by the contents, but gave up because it was just too much!
  10. Search the forum for posts on restaurants and on being a college student. A lost of really useful information has been shared.
  11. Your sister-in-law may be thinking of GlutenEase, which claims on the label that it "assists with gluten and casein digestion." If you take a capsule or two before entering the mine field of a salad bar or other area of high cross contamination possibility, you could possibly minimize your symptoms. The same could be said for taking some as soon as...
  12. Almost every cereal in the cereal aisle contains that dreaded "barley malt" which means they contain gluten. You will get very frustrated reading labels looking for any that don't. Others have given you good suggestions. Hopefully your daughter will like one of those.
  13. Would you mind sharing where you found that study?
  14. Horsepucky. Avon is a big enough company that they can demand the information and if the vendors choose not to provide it Avon can find a vendor who will. Somebody somewhere knows what is in the product. If neither Avon nor their vendors will provide the information, let them know that you will take your money and business to a company that is more...
  15. How long are your road trips? You should be able to buy a cooler and take food with you.
  16. You must be the long-lost twin I never knew I had!!!
  17. Just a couple of thoughts - I would think liquid vitamins would absorb more readily if for no other reason than they have the "head start" so to speak of already being liquid. Also, I may be confused about Vitamin D. I thought the body made its own when exposed to sunlight. I realize that in the winter in places like Minnesota, NE China and Canada...
  18. I definitely would not trust anything from KFC. They are not very friendly to people with food sensitivities and there is flour in the air in their stores. I get nervous waiting on the KFC manager when she comes into where I work!
  19. The symptoms you describe are what happen to me when I eat rice bran. Check the ingredient list for that.
  20. Maybe it's because I'm in San Diego, but I can buy masa at WalMart. However, they don't carry the white corn tortillas so I have to go elsewhere for those.
  21. Why would anyone of any age who was completely asymptomatic be tested for celiac or anything else? I would think there would be no studies on such people because there would be no subjects to study? People who are completely asymptomatic don't tend to get tested for anything simply because they are completely asymptomatic. Or am I missing something...
  22. Wow. Let me just start off by hoping you feel better soon! As far as what to eat, shop around the perimeter of your grocery store where the simple meats and produce items are found. There is a lot of stuff there! You will eventually be able to eat some processed foods but it's best to stick to basics at first. The diet can be a challenge but it...
  23. Obviously you did not have Miss Becker for eighth grade English!
  24. A lot of gluten-free baked goods use rice bran but for me any kind of bran is a "four letter word." I am looking to try Food For Life's White Rice Bread and see how that goes cuz it would be nice to make a quick peanut butter sandwich for work! It may bother you, too - check the ingredients. As far as potato chips go, Lay's Stax (regular flavor...
  25. Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes are NOT OK. But garlic and basil are fine.
