ARCHIVED Military Career Not Posisble With Careerillness
home-based-mom replied to Candy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Employers of all kinds reject applicants based on criteria the employer knows from experience makes the applicant unsuitable for that kind of work. The applicant may not realize it because the applicant doesn't have the experience, but the employer has seen it far too often and knows better than to take on the great expense of training someone doomed to... -
ARCHIVED I'm New, Have A Few Questions
home-based-mom replied to A-Swiss's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Let me just add that you will need to be doing a *lot* of reading for awhile. Reading labels and reading posts in this forum. This place is wonderful - don't hesitate to ask anything. Someone will know the answer and will be happy to help you. Welcome! -
ARCHIVED Look What Was In My E-mail Today!
home-based-mom replied to a topic in Publications & Publicity
I don't know anything about Shari Lieberman, but it seems to me that the criticism that she is trying to make money off of people with celiac is a bit unfair. Every book about the disease in the bookstore and every product available in the market place that declares itself to be gluten free is making money off of people with celiac for either the book author... -
I would like to add that no matter how tempting it might be, it's better not to give in to emotional knee-jerk reactions to her behavior - name calling, throwing stuff back at her, that sort of thing. I always tell the kids at church that one person's unacceptable behavior is *NEVER* an excuse to drop down to their level. If you still are meeting her...

ARCHIVED Newbie Here. Need To Vent.
home-based-mom replied to aileendq's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I keep wanting to say this to so many with ignorant uncaring doctors. Ask your physician if it's so normal, is that how life is for him/her? If not would he/she care to trade places with you? HMMMMMMMMMMM? Just a guess but probably not. -
ARCHIVED I Found My Cookbooks!
home-based-mom replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yay! Dare I ask who packed that box? -
I'm so sorry your mother did such a cruel thing. For you own health and safety, do not give her any more opportunities to do it again. If that means not eating lunch with her, then don't eat lunch with her. If that means leaving her standing there holding a pan of whatever, then so be it. I don't think giving her the "if" option (if you don't...

ARCHIVED New gluten-free Casein Free Bakery!
home-based-mom replied to ThatlldoGyp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Sarah, and thank you for the explanation. It does make sense. However, when it comes to choosing between a plate of brownies and half a tank of gas in order to get to work or get the kids to school, I'm afraid the gas wins every time. -
ARCHIVED How To Shop For Healthy, gluten-free And Cheap Food
home-based-mom replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is a link to a recent Open Original Shared Link. They don't deal with gluten issues (although maybe they should as they *DO* have to contend with fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome!) so we cannot do exactly as she does, but some of the basic concepts can be adapted to our own shopping habits. I thought it was particularly interesting that store... -
ARCHIVED My Little Guy's Been Published!
home-based-mom replied to elye's topic in Publications & Publicity
Good for him! Very well written. Let me suggest that you print out copies (making sure to show that it was a published letter) and mail them to all the clueless doctors with explicit instructions that it is to be included in his file! -
ARCHIVED Swollen Hands And Feet
home-based-mom replied to WendyG's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have this problem when the weather gets hot. My solution is to drink more water, walk as much as possible, and elevate my feet at night. As I only have the problem in hot weather, I'm not sure whether I should blame salt or gluten. Or the weather! -
ARCHIVED Parenting 101 Questions?
home-based-mom replied to okgrace's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Poor little thing! Can you post what she does eat? It might be easier to spot something that way . . -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Work-retail
home-based-mom replied to soccermom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is always the possibility that the customer whose bra you are fitting could be wearing gluteny lotions, make-up or contaminated clothes. You might want to wash up after each customer as a precaution . . . . -
Other than the soft drink handles or rest room doors or faucets that I mentioned above, I don't know. If a customer had less than stellar sanitary habits then the customer could easily contaminate surfaces such as those. Kinda grosses you out about going anywhere, doesn't it? You think you have followed all "the rules" but all it takes is one person who...

ARCHIVED Email Scam Through Personal Message
home-based-mom replied to 1-out-of-133's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I have heard of a couple of gullible older ladies who actually lost their lives when they went over there!!! I think they found out a bit too much and needed to be "silenced." -
ARCHIVED Email Scam Through Personal Message
home-based-mom replied to 1-out-of-133's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
This is your classic "Nigerian Scam" shifted to the Ivory Coast. I guess that until every person on the planet has acquired internet experience, there will always be newbies as potential targets/victims. Apparently these people have resorted to spamming forums as few e-mail providers are porous enough to let this stuff through anymore. -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Work-retail
home-based-mom replied to soccermom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can *SO* relate to this issue! I am working on other employees as to what they eat and where, and they are much better at washing their hands after eating. If I had any control over customers there would be no food eaten in the store. Yes customers get gluten on *ALL* of the merchandise. I am quite sure every piece of money in the country is contaminated... -
ARCHIVED Tired And Sick ? Need Help
home-based-mom replied to MelliDuff's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
At 600-900 calories per day, your body is in starvation mode and will desperately cling to every calorie it gets. Think 3rd world refugee camp. You should be eating 1000-1200 nutrient-dense calories every day. You are exhausted because you are not getting enough to eat. Add an egg for breakfast. *NEVER* skip lunch or any other meal. Add... -
ARCHIVED Airborne Cold Remedy
home-based-mom replied to mandigirl1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was just going to post this! I never tried it because the description reminded me of Alka-Seltzer which I detest. My daughter tried it once and said it tasted "gross." (It didn't work for her, either.) -
This is down the street from where I live. Husband and daughter go there on occasion (seem to be fine, PTL) but Chipotle has always been too spicy for me. Right now I am kind of glad! More and more people are becoming sick and it doesn't seem to be coming from the employees. If delivery people were the problem, there would be more cases tied to another...

ARCHIVED Introducing Myself, After 4 Years Of Fighting, I Can Now Say
home-based-mom replied to Breila's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just want to add my 2 cents that this forum is the place to come for information. NEVER feel the need to apologize for venting. Most of us have vented at one time or another and can relate to your frustrations. Search around the forum and for links to other sites where you can print out information for your inlaws about what your son can and cannot... -
ARCHIVED Why Am I Hurting

ARCHIVED Rice Flour Or Tapioca Issue
home-based-mom replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Brown rice and rice bran cause problems for me. Minute Rice is fine. I don't know about tapioca yet. -
ARCHIVED Per Se - Success (and Big Splurge)
home-based-mom replied to babysteps's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The rule of good manners is to never make the other person feel uncomfortable. I believe you handled the situation well. Of course if at any time should his behavior change so as to compromise your safety, then a very discreet statement mentioning an "allergy" (what most people could relate to) would hopefully rein him in. -
