  1. What a thoroughly great, entertaining story with a perfect ending! You are a talented writer - explore that option when your kids are old enough that you have time to do so!
  2. A very quick meal that involves a minimum of cooking is to pan fry (or Pam fry ) a WalMart boneless skinless frozen chicken breast, or a Costco Orange Roughy fillet. Add Minute Rice and heat a package of frozen veggies, and voila! A quick and easy healthy gluten free meal. If you want leftovers, cook an extra chicken breast or fillet. Takes NO extra...
  3. Well, you could apply the safe ingredient list to the foods you want to eat and see if there is a match! The easiest thing to do is to shop around the edges of your supermarket where the fresh and frozen meat and produce are found. Many people like Tinkyada brand pastas. There are many gluten free breads you can buy and/or make, but you will not...
  4. I love it that many of you agree with me on the zero level, and I appreciate that Peter does not, BUT . . . You are all missing the point. I think. The question is, how can 20 ppm be considered safe, when the cc level from scrubbed utensils that cannot possibly contaminate to even that high a level has been so thoroughly documented to...
  5. If you have 2 copies of the DQ2 gene, you passed one copy on to each child, and therefore the potential is there. I agree that if it is affordable, do a private lab testing. That way your daughters can make an informed decision.
  6. Much ado has been made recently about whether "gluten free" means zero gluten, or 20 ppm gluten, or 200 ppm gluten or whatever. My personal opinion (and I admit that I tend to think in black and white absolutes) is that gluten free means just that and if there is any gluten in something, it is not gluten free by definition. But I digress as that is not...
  7. I don't know where you are, but my experience is that doctors don't usually tell you those things unless you ask. HOWEVER, the pharmacy should tell you when you pick up the prescription, it should be on the bottle, and if your pharmacy gives you a big printout about the medication, it should be somewhere in there. That printout is beyond dry tiresome...
  8. You can't grow old if you're pumped full of preservatives, right? Bring on those fries! I did not see the movie, but the info about the fries kind of goes along with finding old fries under car seats, etc. I don't remember any of them ever looking rotten!
  9. Ya know, I bet if you ask really really nice, Collette would be happy to share some rain with you! Maybe you could even swap rain for warmth! Sounds like a win-win trade to me! Seriously, hope you feel better soon!
  10. I think I read that somewhere. The goal is a person can get one of their core products (the ones they always have such as hamburgers and fries, rather than the fad items like Teriyaki or Chipotle that come and go) anywhere in the world and it will be the same. Burger and fries in Ho Chi Min City is the same as burger and fries in Mexico City is the same...
  11. WalMart sells bags of Dove chocolates for less than $3. I keep a ready supply of the Dark Chocolates "just in case."
  12. Thank you! It works well in the work place setting, too. People eat sandwiches, burritos, pastries, whatever, and touch *everything* without washing their hands. It takes a while, but they eventually start to get it!
  13. I would be careful here. This rules out milk but does *not* rule out wheat!
  14. If you can get to a store and buy a bottle of GlutenEase, it might help. the sooner the better. Otherwise, I hope he isn't too sick or sick for too long!
  15. Be sure to let them know. They may have complied with the letter of the law, but others of us have already groused about the tiny writing on the warning labels. Hope you feel better soon!
  16. Use the dog poop analogy. Ask them if the food had dog poop on it would they just rinse/brush it off and then go ahead and eat it. Their answer will of course be no. Ask them why not. They will probably say because it would make them sick because there is no way they could be sure to get *all* of it off. The light may be coming on in their heads by this...
  17. A friend of a friend has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. According to my friend, her friend has been on all sorts of medications, none of which have done any good. My friend also said her friend doesn't cook. They eat fast food or microwave something from the freezer. AND my friend said her friend doesn't do internet. SO, as my friend said...
  18. I *love* the spell checker in the Google Toolbar. I use it on everything I type on the internet, just as Ursa said. I can read something over and over and STILL not see that I transposed letters!
  19. Do you know what that means? The Oscar Mayer Wiener is going to be singing that is wishes it were a BallPark Frank!!! PS: I'm not a hotdog eater, either, but I appreciate the heads up, too.
  20. The only safe Lays chip is the original (not flavored) Stax. Everything else seems to be subject to cross-contamination. You might luck out and eat a bag or two without problems and then get really sick on the next one. Original Stax are produced on dedicated equipment.
  21. 30-35 years ago the only product I knew I had a problem with was All-Bran. So I quit eating it and end of problem. Or so I thought. Now not only can I not eat any type or form or derivative or amount of wheat, but I cannot eat rice bran, either.
  22. I second the idea of keeping the food diary, and also noting where you are (home, work, ? ) as well as what you ate. You might discover something that way. As far as pet food, I feed my cat Puring One, which I know isn't gluten-free, but is one of the very v-e-r-y few pet foods not on that recent recall list. Don't forget that all those pet foods that...
  23. It sounds like their phone person is a bit clueless, because anti-oxidants have no effect on gluten. I woder if they even know what gluten is? Nevertheless, I agree with Patti that you should call and ask for the source of the Vitamin E. Don't be surprised if they either don't know or tell you that it's OK because it's "natural" or "organic." Also...
  24. Look into a nutritional supplement called Benecalorie. It can be ordered online, and may help her. Please keep us posted on how she is doing.
  25. Celiac is not convenient - but untreated celiac is fatal. A kid may be able to play in the street just fine over and over without negative consequence, but eventually he will get hit by a car. If you are in college, you are an adult. A young adult, but an adult. Take something with you to eat. Buy something better than gravy. You say...
