  1. I don't know for sure if bleach would get out any left-over gluten or not, but it might damage the salad bowl! If you are uncomfortable using it as it was originally intended, use it for something else non food related. Maybe fill it with polished rocks and put in an artificial plant? You'll think of something . . .
  2. Someone posted in another thread that celiac falls under the ADA requirements. In addition to the other suggestions, look into that. Your boss may be required by law to work with you to overcome the issues you face. It will be much easier to deal with while you are still employed than it would be to have to file a wrongful termination lawsuit.
  3. Interesting. I learn something new here almost every day. I had no idea Ajinomoto made or did anything except MSG!
  4. There have been several threads in recent months discussing with how others have dealt with the food issues at school. Do a forum search and you should find a lot of helpful info.
  5. It may be too late as your kids have already been exposed to TV, but in 18 years of working with kids at church, by far the best behaved kids are the ones who do not watch TV. They get to watch approved videos, but TV programs ( and commercials) for the most part just model rude and otherwise unacceptable behavior. I still remember when my daughter...
  6. Do a forum search (top left of page) for "cast iron + self clean" without the quotes. You will find several threads that discuss putting cast iron in your oven on the self cleaning cycle. It seems to have worked for quite a few people.
  7. Meats, fruits, vegetables and starches EXCEPT wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats are all naturally gluten free. So there are 3 things, possibly 4, that are off limits to you, and the rest of the world of food is yours to explore and enjoy. What you will need to give up is the unhealthy western diet of processed foods because many if not most...
  8. Two parts calcium to one part magnesium? Or two parts magnesium to one part calcium?
  9. I confess I learned something here because I had never heard of this stuff! I does seem to bring to mind "toxic waste" though!
  10. And here I was about to post that this was a roommate match made in hell!
  11. If you can eat corn but want a stretchy tortilla for a burrito, try adding xanthan gum or guar gum to masa and then rolling it extra thin - or at least thinner that a standard corn tortilla.
  12. There are tons of bread recipes over at the Bob's Red Mill web site, and many of them are gluten free. As soon as this infernal heat wave is over, I plan on trying the one for Potato Quick Bread. It sounds really quick and easy and tasty.
  13. This might sound sarcastically obvious but you will never get used to it if you don't at least try to use it. Start with something really easy, like a Pamela's mix or some such. Or even whip up a couple of scrambled eggs Sounds like overkill, but it will get your feet wet. Just keep working with it and I bet you will love it before long! ...
  14. My daughter has to take a bunch of little kids to the Del Mar Fair (or whatever the heck they call it anymore) next week. She feels better if she avoids gluten, and I asked her what she was going to eat there because I can't think of anything suitable. I don't think she had thought that far ahead - she has no idea. Has anybody gone and found anything...
  15. This one, for instance. Open Original Shared Link
  16. As long as the cooking surface of the crock pot is not chipped or cracked, it should be OK. As Momma Goose indicated, a used bread machine with all its seems and nooks and crannies is not a good idea at all.
  17. I think I remember somebody posting once that they had been part of a double blind research study but I don't remember if it was for this substance or another one. Anyway, they had to drop out for other totally non-related reasons and so were allowed to see if they had been given the wheat or the placebo and it was the wheat. They were pleasantly surprised...
  18. Remember that just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you! Seriously, I don't think you can get too paranoid here. The gluten molecule is a very sticky little bugger and is probably everywhere. Some of us have wished that it would fluoresce or glow in the dark or something, but if it actually did we would probably totally...
  19. Where did you hear that? I eat it all the time!
  20. Hi, and welcome to the forum! You actually do not ever need to go to the health food store. Go to the regular grocery store with your mom and shop around the edges where the fresh and frozen meats and produce are found. They are better for you are gluten free naturally. Stay out of the middle aisles where the processed packaged stuff is. That...
  21. I am resurrecting this old thread because I was thinking of doing this. It just so happens that the timing coincides with my 60th birthday and I thought it would be a good way to mark that milestone. HOWEVER, they don't seem to offer any food other than regular and vegetarian, and the website said you can't have people coming into camp and there is...
  22. Hi, Norma, and welcome to the forum. You will learn a lot here. Just because you are not experiencing GI symptoms does not mean that gluten is not doing its insidious damage. You really should go off the gluten ASAP now that you have your diagnosis. Shop around the edges of your grocery store for fresh and frozen meats and produce. If you need help...
  23. I would like to see this labeling as the mandatory version, too. It may never be possible to get an accurate assessment of a batch of something from a random sample, and it probably would always be different from batch to batch, anyway. Anecdotal experiences with Lay's chips are a good example. If the ingredients are all listed, allergens (current and...
  24. I've always liked fish, but what can you expect from someone who grew up in Seattle and has Norwegian blood in her veins! Heck, I'll even eat lutefisk on occasion! (If you don't know what that is, don't ask cuz you don't wanna know.)
  25. O negative. Mom was O negative, Dad was A Positive and then became A negative. Doctors still scratch their heads over that one, but he was a hot ticket item as a blood donor! I believe my gluten intolerance comes from my mom's side of the family.
