ARCHIVED Can Dog Treats Make Me React
home-based-mom replied to krisb's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It is my understanding that once gluten comes into contact with anything including your hands, because of its extremely sticky nature it is there until washed off. Therefore anything you touch after handling anything contaminated by or containing gluten and before washing your hands also becomes contaminated. DH is not the issue. Cross contamination is... -
ARCHIVED New Here Looking For Help
home-based-mom replied to Caseysmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Angie and welcome to the forum. This is a great place to learn. For what it's worth, taking your daughter off of gluten before all the tests have been done will virtually guarantee a negative result as the blood tests look for antibodies that you daughter's body will no longer be producing. The biopsy (a hit and miss procedure at best) looks for intestinal... -
ARCHIVED Let's Play "find The Cause"
home-based-mom replied to skinnyasparagus's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It would make sense to eliminate whatever you had for dinner and whatever you had for breakfast as those things caused problems for you. If you continue having problems, keep eliminating what caused the problems. Keep a detailed log and pay attention to whether or not problematic foods belong to the same family or not. -
ARCHIVED Is Whey All Wheat Or Is There Milk Whey?
home-based-mom replied to rmducote's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, Eating her curds and whey. ~~~~~~~~~~~~(more or less aka "cottage cheese") There came a big spider, He sat down beside her. And frightened Miss Muffet away! -
ARCHIVED Taking Communion At New Church And Dh
home-based-mom replied to brizzo's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Perhaps you could carry on the conversation in the section about anything except Celiac. While this thread has indeed deviated far from DH, it seems that over in that section you are free to discuss (politely and courteously and within obvious social limits) whatever you want. -
What ever happened to "take responsibility for your own health care?" A test was done for a reason and a follow up visit was scheduled to discuss the results of the test. It is easy, common, and probably normal and inborn to look around for someone else to cast blame on. (Genesis 3:12-13) Nevertheless it is not the fault of the doctor nor of the staff...

ARCHIVED Help Keeping Dd gluten-free At Vbs
home-based-mom replied to kbdy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm assuming that your church bought one of the themed VBS kits? If so, everything is spelled out for them - snacks, crafts, everything. Either research on line or get the info from the director. Talk to the volunteers, talk to the director, call a special meeting, do whatever fits into your time schedule. I'm not sure how deep of an impression you can... -
ARCHIVED Flu Shots
home-based-mom replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many diseases which are vaccinated against are spread through the air. Worse, with some diseases people are contagious days before knowing they have the disease because they do not yet have symptoms. All the precautions you mention are good ideas, but they won't stop everything. Many vaccines are made from snippets of DNA - enough to trigger your... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free On A Budget And Dealing With Family
home-based-mom replied to susanm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are using regular gluteny flour to make regular bread, washing your hands, mixer, and counter is NOT enough. Flour dust gets everywhere and you will need to totally decontaminate your kitchen as well as every room you or anyone else tracked flour dust into each and every time you bake. You may be able to bake without temptation but you cannot bake... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free On A Budget And Dealing With Family
home-based-mom replied to susanm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A few do, but most people do not make 2 meals. Most people cook gluten free and feed the family gluten free dinners. People in the family who still eat gluten have 2 choices. They can eat it elsewhere but not at home, or they can understand "The Rules" about how to avoid cross-contamination, and keep their gluteny bread, all condiments used on that bread... -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods/houston, Tx
home-based-mom replied to Live2BWell's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only really really must have for me is something I can keep in my purse in case I get caught unable to get home for meal time. So I have some Glutino Cranberry Breakfast Bars and some Lara Bars. With your other list of no-no foods, the Glutino Bars probably wouldn't work, but there are a lot of Lara Bars and maybe one of them might work for you. ... -

ARCHIVED Birthday Party Menu?
home-based-mom replied to stolly's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
When I was growing up the person whose birthday it was got to choose what was for dinner because it was our special day. I don't remember what I picked (my birthday is too close to Thanksgiving) but my brother always chose spaghetti and my dad always chose lutefisk! So I gotta ask - what does your daughter like? What is her favorite dinner? Is... -

ARCHIVED Flu Shots
home-based-mom replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I almost always get a flu shot and have never had a problem with them. I have also had a pneumonia shot and didn't have a problem with that, either. -
Hi, Vickie I had the same thoughts about lotions, shampoo, etc. when I first started. You do need to make sure they are gluten free because you touch them with your hands and then if you touch food or your mouth, you transfer the gluten into your system. It isn't just when you apply lotion after your shower - any time you touch your skin that has gluteny...

ARCHIVED Brain Fog?
home-based-mom replied to tannilisa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Tannilisa, try to think of gluten as dog poop. Anything that comes into direct contact or indirect contact with it is contaminated and will harm your husband. All of the things you mentioned have the potential to transfer gluten to him. The safest way to protect him is to keep a gluten free kitchen so he will always be safe at home. If you are unwilling... -
ARCHIVED I Didn't Have Any Symptoms
home-based-mom replied to Green Eyes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If testing is an affordable option, I think you should go for it because then you will know for sure whether or not your son is likely to develop the disease later on. Also, it is not at all unusual for blood tests to show false negatives, even more so if the complete panel was not run. From what others have posted in other threads, your GI has given... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Feel This Way?
home-based-mom replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ya know what? I could *SO* easily slip into that mode. I am not self conscious in front of groups, but one-on-one interactions that I think will draw attention to me or focus on me make me most uncomfortable. But last weekend I *had* to go to Plano, Texas, for a mini missions conference. I *had* to go because I was making a presentation no one... -
ARCHIVED Couple Questions...
home-based-mom replied to pewpewlasers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Don't just look for the bold text that lists the allergens. The required allergens have to be listed, but if they are part of the ingredient list they don't have to be re-listed in bold. Read the entire ingredient list looking for "the usual suspects." If you are just looking for bold text saying "contains whatever" then you could and probably are missing...
