  1. I think you can assume there will never be anything safe to eat at these events. Your choices are to not go or bring your own food. There is no way that people who don't "get it" and are making food for such a crowd can be trusted to take the necessary precautions. It just ain't gonna happen. I hope you feel better soon!
  2. It's too late to edit this post so I just need to add to it. If you read some of the info on those two sites, you will recognize a lot of symptoms that are common to people on this forum. Many of these symptoms seem to be the ones that just don't go away. If you have symptoms that won't go away, even with the gluten free diet, look into this mold...
  3. As I have posted before, I have a customer who is extremely sensitive to molds. After (I think) 2 years on disability she tried to go back to work 3 different times and didn't last a full day in any of them because of mold in the buildings that others were neither aware of nor sensitive to. She gave me a couple of web sites for more info. Open...
  4. It sounds like you are afraid to have tests run that may very well save your life because you are afraid someone else might think you're a weirdo. Do some research, make printouts from reputable sources, and take them to your appointment. Keep a diary, make, notes, whatever it takes, and present them to your physician of choice explaining that...
  5. If you are going to have him tested you have to do it before you remove gluten from his diet. Once he isn't eating gluten he will not be producing antibodies (if he ever has been and is sounds like he is) so the tests will almost assuredly be negative whether he is celiac/gluten intolerant or not. Also if you have taken him off and then the doctor has you...
  6. "Lactose" is dairy sugar. "Casein" is dairy protein. When you eliminate dairy, you eliminate both. Lactose intolerance (as far as I know) causes some painful and unpleasant digestive problems, but enzymes are available to help some people digest the lactose and be able to consume at least some dairy products if that is their only issue. Casein...
  7. Casein is the protein in dairy products. You cut it out by avoiding all milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, anything that contains milk. Fortunately milk has to be listed as an allergen, so label reading is a must. It is quite possible to have anaphylactic reactions to casein if you have an intolerance to it.
  8. Near the top of this page click on My Controls and then on the left click on Board Settings. Select your Time Zone and save the settings.
  9. If you were involved in a clinical trial, you would be instructed to record absolutely everything that was different after you used whatever was being tested than it was before you used what was being tested, even if you couldn't imagine how there could possibly be a connection. Using that as a guideline, record everything you mentioned in your post...
  10. I agree that you sound classic and will probably feel much better not eating gluten. When you go grocery shopping, ahop around the perimeter of the store where the fresh and frozen meats and produce are found. Stay away from the processed stuff in the interior aisles as they usually contain wheat in one processed format or another. Don't try to...
  11. I confess to being a Modern Marvels Junkie - I've seen that show twice! Definitely worth watching.
  12. Agree with them! It's NOT the same! The same was "eat the same food and get the same sick." Now it's better because it's eat different food and, tah-dah! DON'T get sick! The food and the sick are a package deal and you choose Package #2 which is different food and don't get sick. Remind them that you're a big girl now and you get to choose what you eat...
  13. The gel is not toxic but some rather powerful explosives have components in gel format. So gels are major no-nos on flights. As annoying as it is to have them take your perfectly innocent stuff, it is also scary to realize how easy it would have been to bring an explosive gel on board the plane. That TSA employee didn't do much to make me feel...
  14. Suggestions: 1) Remember how sick you get and focus on that. 2) Take gluten-free garlic bread with you. Eat yours when they eat theirs. 3) Don't pretend you don't want any. Pretend it's dog poop and is contaminating everything it touches and everyone who is touching it. 4) This is tough but read posts and signatures on this forum...
  15. Congratulations on sticking up for yourself and insisting that your home be safe for you. Had you given in there is a good possibility that no one would ever take you seriously. Being assertive and most importantly consistent was the best thing you could have done. There is a difference between being assertive and being a "witch with a b." ...
  16. From the dawn of Creation until a generation or so ago there was no such thing as daycare because dads were able to provide for the moms who stayed at home raising the family. Children did just fine without all of the structured learning that takes place in daycare centers and pre-schools. Children played with other neighborhood children, with siblings...
  17. Neither my symptoms nor my reactions have ever been severe. They have just been unpleasant enough to make me not want to repeat them. They are also specific enough that I know definitively if I've been glutened. Nevertheless, I basically don't eat things prepared by others because they don't "get it." It is just safer to take your own food or eat...
  18. I would think daycare would be unavoidable cross contamination hell unless the entire home or facility was gluten free. I think if the nanny is affordable, especially as your daughter already knows and loves her, this would be far and away the best decision. Just curious - what issues are you struggling with in making up your mind?
  19. I thought it was a new feature designed to keep threads on topic by reminding readers at the top of each page how the whole thread started out!
  20. Kirkland Trail Mix available at Costco does not say "gluten free" on the label but has no gluten-containing ingredients. I have been eating it without any problems.
  21. I agree with those who are reading between the lines and suspect there was more to the questioning than being rude. I too suspect she had reasons for asking other than being nosy. Too bad neither of you followed up with "why." I suggest shopping there again and making a point of going through her line.
  22. We don't have A/C. In the summer I keep an ice cube tray on top of the computer tower and switch it out when the ice is melted. Very low tech but it works!
  23. I don't think it has been finalized yet. I think everyone is just assuming that's what the FDA is going to do. Basically it will mean that products will be like Rice Dream milk - labeled "gluten free" but not really "gluten free."
  24. I could be wrong, but it could be AT&T. I also have AT&T DSL and it disconnects countless times every day. I call AT&T all sorts of epithets that should be deleted and hope to ditch them soon. What passes for their "customer support" is in a third world country that speaks English with an unintelligible accent so don't even bother to try calling...
  25. It probably can't happen. The solution is to not label anything "gluten free." The solution is to list *ALL* ingredients (not just those under a particular threshold) and let the buyer know if the food is processed in a shared facility or on shared equipment. Let people read the labels and make their own decisions, but don't flat-out lie to them and call...
