ARCHIVED Dreaded Nightshades, Should I Avoid All?
home-based-mom replied to onelildream's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I always wonder the same thing when someone says something tastes like cardboard! -
ARCHIVED New Celiac Bored With Options

Forum member "sickchick" posts lots of recipes, They all look pretty good to me! What specifically besides gluten can you no longer eat? -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Eat Honeycom Cereal?
home-based-mom replied to krisb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a little packet of Great Value instant oatmeal more mornings than not, and am OK with it. I think eating anything with oats is one of those things that has to be determined on an individual basis. Some people can eat oats without problems, and some cannot. It may even come down to some oat products will work for you, and some won't. -
Food fads in general. A few years ago Teriyaki was all the rage. Everything was teriyaki this and teriyaki that. Now it's chipotle this and chipotle that. Let's hope that when they shout "Gluten Free!" from the rooftops, it lasts longer than teriyaki or chipotle!

ARCHIVED How Clean Did/do You Make Your Kids Keep Their Room?
home-based-mom replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't know if it would help with keeping the room clean, but that definitely would put an end to any door-slamming tantrums! -
ARCHIVED Ok What Do You Guys Think?
home-based-mom replied to mcs1984's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You could also call every day checking to see if there has been a cancellation. -
ARCHIVED Different Levels Of Intolerance?
home-based-mom replied to Alz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Search the board for the phrase "all in your head" and you will discover that is how doctors put the blame on *you* when *they* can't figure out what is really wrong. Keep a detailed food diary and note when you have pains or other symptoms. You may find things are not as random as they seem! -
ARCHIVED Interesting Site
home-based-mom replied to Aleshia's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That site looks like a good place for many of you with horror stories to consolidate your experiences into one post and post it there on the "Experiences" page. Much of what is posted here is chopped up into various topics and posts might be better absorbed by a reader if it were consolidated into one (long) post. Just a thought . . . . -
ARCHIVED Taco Shells
home-based-mom replied to Wakeboarder's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was going to suggest that, too. Try making your own tortillas totally from scratch by adding guar gum or xanthan gum to masa. Masa is cheap but the gums are not so it might not be worth the experiment unless you have a bag of one of the gums around anyway. Do let us know! -
ARCHIVED Not A Rant, Just A Ramble
home-based-mom replied to bakingbarb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wonder if this is an unauthorized practice that gets done anyway - sort of like dumping the practice cones back into the hopper at DQ. -
ARCHIVED Bone Density Scan
home-based-mom replied to KristaleeJane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't second this strongly enough. You used to see commercials from a drug company for a drug called Fosamax which was prescribed for osteoporosis. Now you see commercials from attorneys, trolling for victims of Fosamax because under some circumstances it has been linked to a condition called "dead jaw." Yikes! Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Eye Misalignment
home-based-mom replied to fedora's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In that case, see how he does when he is not exposed to fluorescent lighting. That is getting harder and harder to do, but you can still buy incandescent bulbs and there is always good old sunshine! -
ARCHIVED Feeling A Little Down
home-based-mom replied to FoxersArtist's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Anna, my heart goes out to you having to make such a gut-wrenching decision, but keep remembering that you made it after much talk and prayer, and you made it based on what you were convinced at the time was the absolute best for your own health and for your family. You cannot beat yourself up with "yeah buts" "what ifs" and "if onlys" because those never... -
I have them sometimes when the weather is really dry, as in single digit humidity. One thing that has helped me and may help you is to make sure your vitamin C supplement has lots of bioflavonoids because they help strengthen the blood vessel walls.

ARCHIVED Have A Big Sales Meeting Coming Up
home-based-mom replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
GOOD! This is the best thing I've heard you say! For all you know, there are other sales reps with food issues, too! -
ARCHIVED What Is This? Warn 0% Box Box Box Box Box
home-based-mom replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
For what it's worth, I can see my own warning level (which is "0" ) but I see no one else's. So your secrets are safe from me! -
ARCHIVED Celiac Testing
home-based-mom replied to AliB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That sounds great! Looking forward to the day when that is where doctors *start* looking rather than what gets done as a last resort! -

ARCHIVED Celiac Testing
home-based-mom replied to AliB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This was/is probably because tests are run looking for something specific. Either it is found or it isn't. Someday it would be nice if instead of testing for specifics, they could just look to see what is there and what isn't there. That may be a pipe dream of the future, but it sure would save a lot of time and money and suffering! -
ARCHIVED Cloudy Urine
home-based-mom replied to skinnyasparagus's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A word to the wise from the voice of experience here: Cloudy urine is usually a sign of a bladder infection. Call your doctor and make an appointment ASAP to get it checked out. Do not wait because if it is a bladder infection it can travel up to the kidneys and then you have even worse problems. Tell them you have cloudy urine and they will get you... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Enzymes
home-based-mom replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Capsules are actually easier to swallow than pills. Most people who have problems with them are trying to toss them to the back of the mouth as you would do with a pill. But capsules float and when you try to toss them towards the back of the mouth, they float to the front because that is up. Have your daughter just put her head down as if she were bowing... -
ARCHIVED Should I Quit My Job?
home-based-mom replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ursa is right - the treatment is to refrain from eating any gluten. However, a few Frequent Posters have found that the cause of their gluten intolerance is something other than Celiac, such as Lyme or metal toxicity or parasites or . . . . When the other problem has been taken care of and the gut has healed, the person is able to resume eating small... -
ARCHIVED Should I Quit My Job?
home-based-mom replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My first thought is, if you don't level with them and spell it out in detailed black and white, how can you expect them to know? They probably don't read minds any better than I do, which is not at all. My second thought is, if you keep telling them that there is nothing in "that" restaurant you can eat, but you go there and eat it anyway, how do... -
ARCHIVED Poll: How Much Do You Spend On Groceries?
home-based-mom replied to jesslynn555's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many here have found that by shopping around the edges of the store where the naturally gluten-free fresh and frozen meats and produce are found, and then cooking from scratch instead of relying on processed convenience foods and fast foods, their overall food expenses have actually gone down. You can get some money saving hints for shopping at Open... -
ARCHIVED Gluten/wheat Related Intolerances
home-based-mom replied to blondebombshell's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are you still eating wheat? If so, you haven't cut gluten out of your diet! EDIT - oops! AliB beat me to the submit button! It could also be something else causing your problems that you haven't discovered yet. Bananas have always caused me problems. Good thing I never liked them anyway! I also can't eat raw carrots or rice bran. Maybe in...
