ARCHIVED Laughter Is The Best Medicine
home-based-mom posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the... -
ARCHIVED Airborne Eposure And Contamination
home-based-mom replied to Dennis wayne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know if you meant that as a pun or not, but either way, it's a good one! -
ARCHIVED A Tough Choice To Make
home-based-mom replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Just wanted to add my "thumbs up" that you should offer, but echo what ravenwoodglass said about the car seat. Option "B" could be for you to pick one up at a yard sale or resale shop. If you do that, be sure to check the recall list before you buy. It definitely sounds like Landen would be better off with you than where he is now. -
ARCHIVED Eucharist And Communion Bread
home-based-mom replied to moldlady's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
After engaging in multi-page forum brouhahas which resolve nothing, we all agree to disagree, go our separate ways, and do as our conscience dictates. Search the forum for any relevant term and you'll see what I mean! -
ARCHIVED Really Struggling With The Celiac Thing
home-based-mom replied to amandasch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you called the manufacturer of either of these to verify they are gluten free? From reading other threads I have come to realize that even though it can be difficult to get the information because the person answering the phone may not know the answer and may not even know who to ask, it is definitely worth pursuing until you get a definite answer.... -
ARCHIVED Teeth Issues!
home-based-mom replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Why would needing to be knocked out make dental school not work for you? Isn't that part of what they teach dental students to do? They gotta learn it somewhere! I think you should at least look into it. The worst they can tell you is "no" and if that's what happens then maybe they can offer recommendations. -
ARCHIVED How To Gain Weight
home-based-mom replied to amandasch's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you tried eliminating soy and dairy? Some people have felt better after doing that and you may (or may not) be able to add them back in later. Search locally or on the internet for a product called Benecalorie. It is gluten-free and made for people who need to gain weight or just need extra nutrition. PS: I second what HAK1031 said -... -
ARCHIVED 'dangerous' Levels Of Arsenic In 10% Of Rice
home-based-mom replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Let's see. We have arsenic in our rice and Open Original Shared Link. which may come from some of the same sources as the water that waters the rice ~ even organic rice. Sheesh. -

ARCHIVED Aghhhhhh! Gas Prices
home-based-mom replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sorry, but if we could find gas at $3.18 we would be doing a happy dance in the middle of the street. Try $3.55. There was a news story yesterday that somewhere in Northern California it was $5.12! They asked the station owner why he charged so much and he had two answers. 1) Because he was in the middle of nowhere. (True but irrelevant.) and... -
ARCHIVED Asberger's And Celiac Disease
home-based-mom replied to mochalatta's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Has he tried individual athletic competition in things such as running, swimming, race walking, gymnastics, bicycling, tennis, etc.? Even though schools have teams for many of those things, he would be less dependent on what others did than he would be in something like soccer. Plus you wouldn't have to deal with ultra-competitive moms, gluten-riddled team... -
ARCHIVED A Sad Day...
home-based-mom replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Lisa, I'm so sorry. Hugs and prayers for your family. Even if your auntie delivers early, the odds are very much in her favor for having a strong and healthy baby. It is very hard to lose your dad ~ let her know others are praying for her. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing
home-based-mom replied to cdog7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just curious ~ what did they compare it to to claim that it only worked a small percentage of the time? The conventional blood test that is so often a false negative? The scope that is so often a false negative? What made them decide it only worked a small percentage of the time? Inquiring minds want to know! -
ARCHIVED Disease Making Me Feel Isolated
home-based-mom replied to Mac20elle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In addition to what everybody else said, if there is a support group near where you live, go to the meetings. You may or may not meet anyone "interesting" but everyone there will understand your dietary restrictions and you will not have to explain anything to anybody! -
ARCHIVED How To Educate My Daughter's Preschool?
home-based-mom replied to stolly's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You should find plenty of food ideas here in the forum, and some more Open Original Shared Link. You should be able to get more info here. Hope it goes well for you! -
You are at the opposite end of life's spectrum from me, so I'm not sure what I would do if I were in your shoes! I get crankier the older I get and might not use as much tact as I should! Nevertheless, it might help to go over the turkey sandwich episode with your dad, from your perspective. Thank him for letting you get into the turkey first, but...

ARCHIVED When Glutened At Resteraunt Do You Compain?
home-based-mom replied to shanluts's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
After thinking about this, I believe you need to let them know what happened. Explain what you said and what was said to you, what you wound up ordering and why you chose what you did, and how your evening was ruined because of your experience in their restaurant. You don't need to play the blame game ~ "just the facts, ma'am" will do fine. The reason... -
ARCHIVED Beware The Realtor Open House
home-based-mom replied to babysteps's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That never would have occurred to me, either! I guess part of the contract has to be "seller has severe food sensitivities and therefore thou shalt NOT bring food into this house for ANY reason" and make sure it is understood that the rule includes all realtors and prospective buyers! Sheesh! Better safe than sorry! -
ARCHIVED Party Invitations
home-based-mom replied to jerseyangel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I agree this works well. I also like the idea of a scrapbook of cards and other mementos. Perhaps you could request old photos and the memories that go with them in lieu of a gift. Then put those together into a book. EVERYBODY loves to look at old photos and remember when! -
ARCHIVED Alvine Pharmaceuticals Obtains Patents For Celiac Disease Therapies
home-based-mom replied to patriceo15's topic in Publications & Publicity
While all of the people who don't particularly like the idea of this medication make very valid points that I cannot disagree with, I still like the idea of something to have available as a back-up plan for use when what we eat is not totally under our control. Right now I don't travel or eat out much at all, but some day I would like to. I would like to... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Affecting My Career
home-based-mom replied to cdog7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That explains why they were friends - birds of a feather. How sad. Your co-worker was probably better off not working there anyway. It probably did not seem that way at the time, of course! Too bad the doctors forgot that their primary responsibility is the health of the patient. -
ARCHIVED Omg Quaker Rice Cakes?
home-based-mom replied to BemLmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I found some at Henry's - buy one get one free, no less! I agree they are a bit too crumbly, but I kind of liked the nutty brown rice flavor. -
ARCHIVED 5th Anniversary gluten-free
home-based-mom replied to Ruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Happy Anniversary! I agree - this board is priceless! -
ARCHIVED African Americans And Celiac Disease
home-based-mom replied to Bravie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was going to post this same thing last night but I hit something wrong on my keyboard and lost everything! Sigh. Anyway, except for first and maybe second generation immigrants, there are few if any African Americans of pure African descent in North America. There don't call America a melting pot for no reason! Bravie, you may think of yourself... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Affecting My Career
home-based-mom replied to cdog7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
cdog7, you sound like you work in the same kind of place where I used to work! I really felt sorry for those who were sick or who cared for loved ones who were sick - or old. Even though you may be able to document a valid illness, you have established yourself as "high maintenance" and a bother. You are probably expected to show up dead or alive and...
