  1. I forgot to mention what I use to bring my food in. :-) I bought a little purse-like cooler at Target. It's a soft-side cooler that looks like it would hold a gallon of milk. It's pretty- has butterflies on it - it's made by Thermos. So it's discrete because it sort of looks like a big purse or little bag. I tuck it under my seat when I go to functions...
  2. I'm on the SCD diet that does not allow grains, sugar, soy, corn, or starchy veggies. Although your friend's son can eat some of these, they may benefit from the recipes on this SCD site: Open Original Shared Link Here's a resource for parents who are considering trying the SCD diet for their child: Open Original Shared Link Hope this helps.
  3. As another poster said, your family probably felt bad that you sat in the other room, too. When you get more used to the diet, you'll learn some tricks. You've gotten some good advice, and I'll add some tricks that I've learned. 1. This isn't the only situation that will come up. You'll also go to functions with buffets where you won't know the ingredients...
  4. I've been on the SCD diet for 7 months and follow it strictly (no cheating). Even after 2.5 years gluten-free, I had severe reactions to food and couldn't figure out the culprits because I randomly got sick, so I decided to do the diet and eliminate everything and then add 1 thing back every 4 days. I feel wonderful! Like you, I had a major junk-food addiction...
  5. >>and it must have been quite a bit<< Not necessarily. You may find that the longer you've been gluten-free, even the smallest amount of gluten will be devastating. Your body is healing, so it doesn't take much gluten to make it revolt on you. My sympathies.
  6. I just called - gluten, corn, soy, lactose, and sugar free, so I can eat it! They have secret ingredients that they inject and coat the turkey in, and slow roast over hickory. Relieved that I can eat Turkey.
  7. I hate it. I hate always thinking about food. I hate that other people feel bad even though I'm okay when they eat in front of me (I'm gluten-free cf sf df and sugar free). I hate that I always have to carry snacks with me in a BIG bag when my friends get to carry trendy little purses. I hate explaining to people when I go to events and refuse to eat the...
  8. Yah, I haven't eaten dairy or soy or corn or grain or sugar or potatoes for 6 months. I feel more awake than I have for years and less sick in other ways, too. I had been sleepy all the time: Getting 10 hours sleep at night, naps after work, sleeping on the sofa all weekend... And I had 2 kids to take care of! Now I have so much energy that I can actually...
  9. Don't discount the benefit of a dermatologist. I just wen to one on Friday after having this terrible rash since last Christmas. Started a med on Friday and the rash is almost gone! Maybe only a few more days on the cream and it'll be good as new. It was horribly itchy and blistery and open wounds. Getting your rash under control will help you focus on getting...
  10. Goodness, how expensive it would be to replace things like our kitchenaids! Is your crockpot ceramic? Ceramic should be dishwashable. Think logically. Think like gluten. What would you stick on? You'd slide off of glass and ceramic and steel. You'd cling to scratches in non-stick pans and wooden spoons. Plastic strainers have all kinds of nooks and crannies...
  11. My dad has mail ordered a Greenburg Smoked Turkey. Yeah! No cooking a bird this year! I can't find ingredients on this site at all: Open Original Shared Link Anyone have gluten-free info about this?
  12. Maybe it's dairy. You said you felt regular tired when you woke up and then in the shower it hit you - AFTER you ate breakfast. Can you go off dairy for a week and then try it again? That's an easy elimination test that you can do on your own. Dairy is a common intolerance. No milk, butter, ice cream, yogurt, cheese, etc. for a week or two. You might start...
  13. My doc also says that I have "sprue." Every time I hear it I imagine that I have a tree growing inside of me. :-) It also depends on company: "I have Celiac" to most. If they look confused I just add that I can't eat wheat, rye, or barley; in restaurants I always use the word "allergy" - they pay real close attention to that word. I don't know if...
  14. I just wanted to give you some support. I cut out all grains and much more 6 months ago and I don't know if "willingly" is a good word for it. There comes a point for many people when it's no longer a choice... So you can exchange the word "willing" with "resigned." I am resigned to cut problem foods from my diet. It's still a struggle almost every day...
  15. As you get further in the diet, you'll get to experiment with all kinds of spices. You aren't limited except for spices that are mixed - curry for example (don't eat garlic powder - it has starch in it). The first condiment I introduced was yellow mustard because, like you, I was very used to "saucing" food. You can use honey, so honey-mustard is a staple...
  16. No more carbs for me either. Since I cut those out I have more energy, fewer headaches, clearer sinuses, and no more bloating. Good luck - and find substitutes that are yummy! Blueberries are my new favorite snack. Especially frozen! It's hot-hot-hot outside these days.
  17. I've found the joy of honey. It satisfies my sweet tooth because I don't eat table sugar or processed foods. Try adding it to some of the foods you can eat - rice and squash?
  18. Breakfast: Smoothie - 1 cup yogurt, 1 whole banana, tbsp honey, 1 cup frozen blueberries Lunch: 2 carrots, apple, peanut butter Snack: blueberries Dinner: grilled cheeseburger, butternut squash with butter and honey, sliced cucumbers with fresh dill Dessert: Jello, banana
  19. Oh, yes... sorry - Specific Carbohydrate Diet. There's a huge thread here on the "other food intolerance" forum. Also, you can google it. Basically means no starches or sugars or carbs. Nothing processed. Lots of meats, fruits, veggies, beans, and nuts.
  20. I was really hesitant to start the SCD diet. It is ridiculously difficult and restrictive, but I feel better than I have in years - probably 15 years at the least. It's been almost 4 weeks on the diet and I can eat about 20 foods now, which makes for very boring meals, but whenever I open the fridge and start to feel sorry for myself, I remember all of...
  21. I'm so sorry this happened to you... And on Mother's Day, too. Bah. I've given up on Amy's after hearing all the terrible stories here on the forum. I haven't eaten it in over a year. Hope you're feeling better.
  22. You sound so miserable. :-( It's rotten news you have to wait until November, and I'll cross my fingers that you get in sooner. 5 months is much too long to be in constant pain, and it must be frustrating to know that you have to wait so much longer to see the neuro. I'm sorry for what you're going through.
  23. Ahhh, you bring back memories from my childhood. I grew up in Anchorage, but we spent summers in Seward on our boat. Thanks for giving me a moment to smile. :-) Now back to the realities of life as a Celiac.
  24. I also take Topamax to ward off migraine, and I take imitrex when I get them. Imitrex works really well for me, but I know a lot of people don't get relief from it. Since this is a fairly new symptom for you and it's so extreme, I am suspicious that it is a neuro problem, not a food problem. If they are debilitating you so much that you can't work or...
  25. I hear you! I can't figure out what's making me sick, either. I went in for allergy testing and everything came back invalid with false-negatives. Long story so I won't get into it. Just wanted to tell you that there are tests for food allergies, they're very expensive (mine were around $5000), and they're not always accurate. I'm planning on going...
