ARCHIVED How Strict Does A Gluten Free Diet Need To Be?
burdee replied to Courtney101's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just because you don't react with obvious symptoms to small amounts of gluten does NOT mean you 'got away with' eating that. You could develop any number of autoimmune conditions which are related to gluten intolerance (like RA, MS, thyroid problems, sjogren's, lupus, etc., etc.). Of course your doc won't tell you those are related to gluten consumption,... -
ARCHIVED Going To The Allergist Tomorrow
burdee replied to norahsmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Unfortunately we don't put food under our skin when we eat. So scratch tests don't diagnose delayed reaction (IgG antibody mediated) food allergies. Also if your daughter never had skin reactions to food, the scratch tests will be invalid. I suggest you find a doctor or naturopath who gives blood tests for food allergies. SUE -
You could give your mom a copy of "Healthier Without Wheat" by Dr. Stephen Wangen. That book explains all the physical problems and autoimmune conditions, which gluten consumption can cause for people who are gluten intolerant and not following a gluten free diet. It also answers many frequently asked questions about gluten intolerance and the gluten free...

ARCHIVED Going To The Allergist Tomorrow
burdee replied to norahsmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you daughter has gastrointestinal symptoms when she consumes dairy or gluten, request a blood test for IgG mediated antibodies to foods. (ELISA is one test which covers many commonly eaten foods.) Skin tests are only accurate if your daughter gets anaphylactic (immediate) reactions like hives or other skin reactions. Most food allergies are delayed reaction... -
ARCHIVED Leaky Gut And Acid Reflux?
burdee replied to Coolclimates's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The problem with acid reflux meds is they don't really address the cause of reflux. They merely suppress the symptoms. Reflux is NOT caused by excess stomach acid. In fact too little stomach acid can cause reflux, because the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is trigger biochemically by the pH level (acid/base) in your stomach when you eat. Without low enough... -
ARCHIVED Small Bowel Overgrowth
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Unless you took a stool test which diagnosed the exact bacteria, parasite or fungus, which caused your symptoms, your doc won't know which drug will kill your gut bug. You can have 'overgrowth' of parasites or fungus (like candida) as well as from bacteria. A good diagnostic test will not only identify the DNA of your gut bug, but also culture out its 'sensitivities... -
ARCHIVED Small Bowel Overgrowth
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Betaine HCl should prevent you from getting new food born bacteria. Although it won't eliminate any gut bugs you already have, which may cause bloating, HCl can improve digestion enough to reduce bloating. After eliminating all my allergens, treating all my gut bugs, I still had bloating and gas after every meal UNTIL I started taking HCl capsules with every... -
ARCHIVED Small Bowel Overgrowth
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
SBO is only slightly less generic than "IBS", which only says what you already know (that you have pain in your gut). Small bowel overgrowth may be caused by pathogenic bacteria, large amounts of opportunistic bacteria, parasites and/or yeasts/fungi (like candida). So SBO is one of many causes of IBS symptoms (pain and bloating after eating). Other causes... -
ARCHIVED Yeast Sensitivity With Gluten Intolerance
burdee replied to krishna's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Baker's yeast in breads is totally different from 'yeast overgrowth' from Candida Albicans or other funguses in your intestines. However there is enough sensitivity to baker's yeast that Enterolab includes that in their stool tests for egg and soy allergy reactions. I also noticed yeast was tested in the ELISA (96 food) blood test panel. I don't personally... -
ARCHIVED Can't Afford To Get Tested
burdee replied to cincichick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, a TSH of 3.6 is high enough to consider hypothyroidism, especially with all your symptoms. Also people with celiac or gluten intolerance are more likely to have other autoimmune diseases, like Hashimoto's thyroditis which causes low thyroid function. Gluten antibodies can attack any organ of the body. So gluten is suspected as a cause of Hashimoto's... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Sugar Cane
burdee replied to Joe0123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was also diagnosed by Enterolab with soy (IgA mediated) allergy. I react to soy with cramping pain, bloating and gas, similar to my gluten reaction. Although many people with gluten intolerance have additional allergies to those 8 major allergens, they can develop delayed reaction allergies to almost any food. SUE -
ARCHIVED Problems With Sugar Cane
burdee replied to Joe0123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I took an ELISA (blood) test for delayed reaction (IgG mediated) allergies. I tested very high on cane sugar. When I accidentally consume that, I get 48 hours of tachycardia and nausea. However, with my other allergens I get bloating and cramping intestinal pain. Nevertheless I still can consume other sugars, like beet sugar, rice syrup, maple syrup, honey... -
ARCHIVED Members W/hypothyroid-> Help :/
burdee replied to cassP's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Cass: I hope you don't have problems with lactose, because synthroid contains the following inactive ingredients: "acacia, confectioner's sugar (contains corn starch), lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, povidone, and talc." When Levoxyl didn't resolve my symptoms, my doc suggested synthroid. However, I declined when I learned synthroid contained... -
ARCHIVED Members W/hypothyroid-> Help :/
burdee replied to cassP's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Your 2006 TSH score of 4.5 was already high enough to consider hypothyroidism. In January 2003 the American Association of Endocrinologists advised labs (and docs) to revise their 'normal TSH range' from 0.5-5.0 to 0.3-3.0. So your 4.5 result was above normal and indicative of low thyroid. Did your doctor overlook or just dismiss that result? Obviously... -
ARCHIVED Refractory Sprue
burdee replied to clee123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also continued to have symptoms (bloating, gas, cramping gut pain) long after I abstained from gluten (and dairy) following my Enterolab diagnosis in 2004. Initially I suspected additional allergies and did ELISA (blood tests) for IgG (delayed reaction) food allergies. Those tests revealed 4 more allergies (eggs, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg). Another... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Interpret My Enterolab Results Please

Many things can cause acid reflux, but almost never excess acid in the stomach. Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)opens at inappropriate times. Foods including caffeine, chocolate, peppermint, onions and alcohol can relax the LES and allow food to reflux. Drugs including NSAIDs (like Ibuprofen or Advil) and analgesics like Demerol...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Vs Gluten Light
burdee replied to bincongo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Tell your sis that Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Sjogren's are highly correlated (and possibly caused by) gluten intolerance. Gluten antibodies can attack any part of the body. In celiac disease gluten antibodies attack the intestines. However, many experts suspect that gluten antibodies attack the thyroid gland, nerves, joints, pancreas, etc. for Hashimoto... -
ARCHIVED Got My Igg Elisa Food Intolerance Results...not Too Happy :-(
burdee replied to arened's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My ELISA test results were sorted into 'no reaction, low, moderate and high'. My doc told me to consider the overall pattern of my results. For example, if I had reactions to many different foods, I should only consider the highest results, because some people react to lots of foods, but only have symptomatic reactions to a few. On each of my tests I reacted... -
I think 'obsessing' about celiac disease is a natural part of developing a new perspective and learning skills we need to choose and prepare safe foods and negotiate safe choices in restaurants. Remember when you learned to drive a car? At first you obsessed about everything you needed to remember to get the car started, to back out of the garage without...

I suspect that comment was directed to me. See my reply about my experience with GPs and PCPs just above your reply comment. SUE

I'm not seeing a GP for thyroid and other autoimmune problems. GPs misdiagnosed my celiac disease as 'gastritis' or 'IBS' for 20 years. When I had parasitic intestinal infections, my HMO PCP asked where I could have gotten that, if I don't travel internationally. She also overlooked my abnormal TSH results for years, because my HMO did not adjust their normal...

ARCHIVED Got My Igg Elisa Food Intolerance Results...not Too Happy :-(

Goat milk still contains casein, although not as much as cow's milk. I don't miss yogurt enough to risk a reaction. For me yogurt was more a dessert than a meal staple. After I discovered Truly Decadent coconut based ice cream, I went through a period where I ate that ice cream almost every day. Then last spring I finished my last pint and haven't replenished... -
Which bacterial infections did you develop after taking the antibiotics? I also had Candida (which I successfully treated with Nystatin) and 5 different bacterial (overgrowth) infections including Klebsiella, Enterobacter Cloaecae, Clostridium difficile (C-diff), Achromobacter and H. Pylori. I've successfully eliminated all of those with various drug or botanical...
