  1. I do occasionally swallow shampoo contaminated water while washing my hair in the shower. My former shampoo also contained soy. When I ingest soy products, I get cramping pain and bloating for about 10 days afterwards. So I decided to switch to Shakai natural shampoo products, which odn't contain any of my 7 diagnosed allergens. They offer a shampoo for color...
  2. I was also diagnosed by ELISA blood test with cane sugar allergy. (You can call it an intolerance, but it's an immune reaction on the blood test.) I can safely eat any sweetner, which is not derived from cane sugar. So I can eat honey, maple syrup, rice syrup, corn syrup, fruit juice sweeteners, stevia, beet sugar and any fruits which are not sweetened with...
  3. I never had diarrhea, but had chronic constipation, which only decreased slightly after going gluten free. Even eliminating my 6 other allergies and treating 8 gut bugs (5 bacteria, 2 parasites and candida) did not completely resolve my constipation. I tried all the usual suggestions (fiber, fluids, probiotics, exercise, etc.), everything except laxatives...
  4. I took low dose naltrexone for 6 months to increase my white blood cells (esp. neutrophils). After taking Vancomycin for C-diff and Iodoquinol for Dientamoeba fragilis (and treating 6 other gut bugs during a 4 year period), my white blood cells were very low. (Several antibiotics and antifungals, esp. Vanco and Iodoquinol, are known to deplete white blood...
  5. I get severe menstrual like crampy pains whenever I consume dairy products. (I have an ELISA blood test diagnosed allergy to casein.) I also get those pains somewhat, after I consume soy. I don't have any GYN problems and I menopaused 14 years ago (no more periods). So whenever I get those pains I assume I've accidentally consumed some dairy or soy. If...
  6. I went gluten/casein free after I received my Enterolab results 7+ years ago. Gluten abstinence was MUCH easier than casein abstinence, because I didn't initially have dairy substitutes which were also free of my other allergens (soy, egg, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg). However, over the years I've found satisfying cheese (Daiya), milks (almond or hazelnut...

    ARCHIVED Good Gi In Seattle?

After many years of misdiagnoses from Group Health doctors, I ordered Enterolab tests to diagnose gluten intolerance, casein and soy allergies. When I continued to have gut symptoms, despite abstaining from those 3 allergens, I went to Stephen Wangen, ND, who founded the IBS Treatment Center in Seattle. He accepted my Elab test results as proof of celiac...
  8. When my doc suggested thyroid (T4) supplements, I chose Levoxyl over Synthroid, because Synthroid contains a lactose ingredient. I have casein (dairy) allergy and react to lactose, as do many other celiacs. Docs (and thyroid 'experts') who don't understand the connection between gluten intolerance and Hashimoto's often tell their patients that they will...
  9. Yes, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 10 months ago after years of hypothyroid symptoms. I had been gluten free since my celiac disease diagnosis in 1994. However, I still had symptoms of low energy, low body temp and chronic constipation despite following all the usual regularity rules (magnesium, fiber, fluids, probiotics), abstaining from my other allergens...
  10. I vote for damaged intestines, which allowed undigested proteins to leak into my blood and form antibodies. I suspect I had undiagnosed celiac over 30 years. I know I didn't have all these allergies/intolerances when I was in my 20s. The food sensitivities got worse over the years, while I had undiagnosed celiac disease. After my celiac disease diagnosis...
  11. I successfully treated my H. Pylori infection with mastic gum, which kills that bacteria and heals the stomach. I also took L-glutamine and turkey rhubarb tincture to heal my stomach. Probiotics won't help heal your stomach, but they will help repopulate your intestines with good bacteria, which crowd out bad bacteria in the intestines. Aloe vera may heal...
  12. Taking L-glutamine helps my intestines recover after accidental contamination. I also took that to heal my stomach while treating H. Pylori. I don't know whether LDN is used for gluten sensitivity. See Open Original Shared Link for uses and precautions for LDN. I can't remember reading about using LDN for gluten sensitivity. However, it's used for many other...
  13. What kind of allergy test did you get? (blood, stool, skin prick???) Did the test look for IgG and IgA as well as IgE mediated allergy reactions? An autoimmune disease (Sjogren's) causes dry eyes and dryness of other mucous membranes in the body. Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease and began to abstain from gluten, I had dry eyes for years. I needed...
  14. Excess acid does not cause heartburn and reflux. However, certain foods and beverages (esp. caffeinated drinks) cause the lower esophageal valve to relax and allow stomach contents (including acid) to reflux. Cutting out caffeinated soda will help reduce the reflux. However, reflux may have made your esophagus very tender. So you need to avoid foods that...
  15. I've been taking low dose naltrexone (LDN) daily since last November (11/29/10). Before I started taking LDN, my white blood cells were low and I had continual respiratory infections (colds, sinus infections). During the first few weeks of LDN I had more vivid dreams, but nothing really disturbing. However, LDN intensified the effect of my thyroid hormones...
  16. Sorry to bore you with the details, but I wanted to tell you with my story that you can recover if you just keep working on your health. I know how frustrating recovery can be, esp. when I think I'm finally well and my symptoms return. I was doing very well until 3 weeks ago when I got contaminated (I suspect dairy from my symptoms) at a restaurant which...
  17. My history is similar to yours. I thought abstaining from gluten would eliminate my gut symptoms. However, gluten was just the tip of my health 'iceberg'. When symptoms continued I took allergy tests and was diagnosed with 6 more food allergies. Abstaining from those foods didn't eliminate all my symptoms. So I kept getting stool tests, got diagnosed with...
  18. Low IgA means you don't produce normal amounts of IgA antibodies. So tests which rely on IgA results (like blood tests for celiac disease) won't be accurate for you. You'll have to test for IgG (and/or IgE) antibody reactions to foods if you suspect allergies. Yes L-glutamine DOES work to heal inflamed intestines (and stomachs damaged from H. Pylori)....

    ARCHIVED Sugar?

I was also diagnosed (by blood test) with allergy to cane sugar. My reaction symptoms are tachycardia (48 hours) and nausea, which differ from my usual food allergy symptoms (cramping gut pain, gas, bloating, constipation). My other allergies/intolerances include gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, vanilla and nutmeg. So I can't eat most processed desserts or mixes...
  20. I've read that 'breath tests' are very inaccurate. I tested for, was diagnosed with and treated for 8 different gut bugs (over a 5 year period). My doc used stool tests (esp. a microbial profile which ID's the DNA of the bug) to diagnose my 5 different bacteria, 2 parasites and candida. Stool tests are very accurate for diagnosing gut infections from bacteria...
  21. Whether or not synthroid could be gluten free, the lactose ingredient will cause problems (symptoms) for most celiacs.
  22. The inactive ingredients of Synthroid include acacia, confectioner's sugar (contains corn) and lactose monohydrate. Many celiacs react badly to lactose, either because they don't produce the lactase enzyme neceessary to digest lactose OR they really have a dairy allergy as well as gluten intolerance. If you react to corn, the sugar ingredient may bother you...

    ARCHIVED Allergist?

Skin tests for food allergies (esp. delayed reaction allergies) are totally worthless, UNLESS your only reaction to food is hives or eczema. We don't put food under our skin when we eat. Many people get gastrointestinal reacions to food allergens. Skin tests will not reproduce those kinds of reactions. However, blood tests can show to which foods our blood...
  24. When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, my doc suggested Synthroid. However, I 'googled' Synthroid's inert ingredients and found it contained the following: "(Inactive Ingredients) acacia, confectioner's sugar (contains corn starch), lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, povidone, and talc." Many celiacs do not tolerate lactose ingredients. I have...
  25. I was gluten free for 7 years before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. So I didn't expect my Hashimoto's condition to improve much after diagnosis. However, my Hashimoto's antibodies (TPOab) have decreased (and I've needed less thyroid supplement) after 4-1/2 months on low dose naltrexone. Rather than needing more thyroid supplement as time goes on, unlike...
