I couldn't tell from your signature whether you've been diagnosed with gluten intolerance or dairy allergy. What tests have you taken for gluten and/or dairy? If you don't want to do blood tests, Enterolab stool tests can indicate gluten antibodies and casein antibodies consistent with gluten and/or dairy intolerance. I know many people on this board who...

Did you check the Symbion website before you bought that? I read the ingredients of that 'probiotic' on their website which said: Ingredients: Bacillus coagulans (200 million CFU*), Bacillus subtilis (100 million CFU), Enterococcus faecium (100 million CFU). Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS). Other ingredients: None. Those ingredients DID NOT include Lactobacillus...

I take a Custom Probiotic (50 billion live cells per capsule) which is also available as a powder which you can mix with water and consume. Probiotics are helpful to restore intestinal health, esp. after taking antibiotics. However probiotics alone may not eliminate whatever 'bug' causes your symptoms. Some naturopathic docs offer stool tests which can...

Yogurt doesn't provide enough good bacteria to compensate for what the antibiotics destroy in your intestines. You may need to take a high dose probiotic (20-50 billion live cells per capsule) during and after your antibiotic treatment. I've been treated for 5 pathogenic intestinal bacteria, 2 parasites and candida. I took probiotics during and after those...

ARCHIVED Bloating!
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Many traditional docs believe drug companies' ads about excess stomach acid causing reflux. Actually a weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which can open at inappropriate times, can cause reflux. Food allergies, gluten intolerance, certain foods and beverages like alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, peppermint and onions, as well as some drugs like ibuprofen... -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know your history or whether you've ever taken any acid blocking drugs, but you could have low stomach acid, which could make you bloat after eating almost anything. Many people with celiac disease have low stomach acid, because gluten antibodies can attack the parietal cells of the stomach. Those cells produce stomach acid, which is necessary for... -
ARCHIVED Question To Those Avoiding Dairy
burdee replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lactose is milk sugar, which celiacs can't easily digest, because their intestinal villae are damaged. Dairy also contains casein, the milk protein, to which people can have immune reactions, either from IgE (immediate) or IgG or IgA (delayed reaction) mediated antibodies. If someone who reacts to milk also reacts to lactose free milk, they might have a dairy... -
I had an anal fissure about a year before my hemorhoids required surgery. I treated the fissure with a hydrocortisone ointment. I completely forgot about that fissure after hemorroid surgery. LOL However after surgery I received a 'sitzbath' device which I used to heal the area and prevent future hemorrhoid flareups. If I used that before my hemorrhoids got...

ARCHIVED Probiotics?
burdee replied to Superfudge's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What kind of probiotics, potency (different number of bacteria) and when you take them, depend on what you want from probiotics. Do you want to improve your digestion? Do you have chronic bloating, irregularity (diarrhea or constipation), even after abstaining from all gluten and other diagnosed food allergies? Have you taken antibiotics either recently or... -
I didn't get intestinal parasites until 4 years AFTER I'd been diagnosed with gluten intolerance and obsessively abstained from gluten and 6 other diagnosed food allergies. However, I was not diagnosed until I was 56, after years of symptoms and misdiagnoses. So lifelong gluten damage plus too many antibiotics without taking probiotics could have made me...

ARCHIVED Bloating!
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I do not react with bloating or gas to many of those foods (listed in a previous post) which are supposed to bloat everybody. I do react to 'gassy vegies' like brocolli, cabbage, brussel sprouts and onions, if I don't take "Excuseme" (like Beano). However I don't react to fruits and other 'fructose containing' foods. Nevertheless, when I took a probiotic... -
ARCHIVED Naturopaths And Metrametrix
burdee replied to danaf617's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
YES, I've done done 4 Metametrix DNA microbial stool tests. I also had persistent gastrointestinal symptoms after being diagnosed with celiac and 6 other food allergies and obsessively abstaining from all those foods. After years of misdiagnoses by traditional docs, I went to a naturopath for food allergy tests. and also got stool test for gut bugs. Initially... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Antibiotic Question
burdee replied to finally diagnosed's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
You can 'google' search 'nitrofurantion (sp?) ingredients' and read the ingredient list. I've taken many different antibacterial, antiparasitic and antifungal drugs. I always check the ingredient list online. You could also call a good pharmacy, especially a compounding pharmacy, and ask the ingredients of any drug. Sometimes you can get a drug compounded... -
ARCHIVED When I Searched "testing For Candida Overgrowth"...
burdee replied to danaf617's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeast sensitivity (which Elab tests) is not the same thing as a candida (fungal) infection in the intestines. Elab tests immune reactions to dietary yeast. Only a stool test (preferably a DNA microbial profile) can correctly detect the exact strain of candida present and which drugs or botanical supplements can effectively kill that strain of candida fungus... -
I already replied this to someone else's candida post, but here I go again: You never said you were diagnosed by stool test for candida. If you just take Nystatin, you may not kill off the candida yeasty beasties, because your particular strain of candida may NOT be sensitive to (killed by) Nystatin. Only a stool test can tell you that. I didn't...

ARCHIVED Do Probiotics And Enzymes Help You For The Most Part?
burdee replied to sweeeeet's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I didn't read anything saying that you had been diagnosed with candida by stool test. (Did I miss that??) If your doc doesn't really know whether you have candida or doesn't do stool tests for candida, I'm not surprised that she would discourage you from taking Nystatin. Any antifungal (antibacterial or antiparasitic) drug will deplete your intestine's good... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Get A Capsule Endoscopy?
burdee replied to jasonD2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry, I haven't had that test, but I'm so glad to hear you found a great GI doc in NYC. However, I'm surprised you doubt you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. If you've been abstaining from gluten, the endoscopy will be negative. Of course, doing a lengthy gluten challenge could do enough intestinal damage to have a positive endoscopy result. ... -
I'm not sure whether you directed your question to me, but here's my answer: Nystatin tablets, 3x daily with meals, as directed by prescription from my doc. NO, I did NOT follow that very restrictive anticandida diet. However, I was already abstaining from gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg (my diagnosed allergies). SUE
-
After I was diagnosed by DNA Microbial stool test with candida, I opted to take Nystatin, because (1) I didn't want to try a restricted diet treatment, because I already have 7 food allergy and celiac disease restrictions; (2) I could get Nystatin inexpensively through my HMO pharmacy; and (3) I read several posts here (years ago) about success with Nystatin...

ARCHIVED Sluggish Digestion Problems... & Why Do I Need So Much Magnesium?
burdee replied to Tidings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
11 years ago I had a hemorrhoidectomy to remove hemorrhoids caused by years of chronic constipation. Nobody asked why a childless woman who didn't sit all day developed hemorrhoids. I had tried all the usual 'constipation cures' like fiber, fluids, magnesium and vitamin C, exercise, etc. However, I didn't know I had celiac disease (after years of the 'IBS... -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I use Custom Probiotics, the adult CP-1 formula which provides 50 billion live (good bacteria) cells per capsule, but does not contain FOS (fructooligosaccharides), which can cause even more bloating. I order those online from their website. The price is very reasonable. Some probiotic companies include FOS in their products to 'feed' the good bacteria. However... -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
burdee replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Bloating usually means you aren't digesting food properly. Food allergies or intolerances, low stomach acid, depleted good intestinal bacteria, parasitic, pathogenic bacterial and/or fungal infections can all impair your gastrointestinal system's ability to digest food. Even if you don't have a true allergy, you can react to artificial sweeteners (esp. sorbitol... -
ARCHIVED Do Probiotics And Enzymes Help You For The Most Part?
burdee replied to sweeeeet's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
After stool tests diagnosed candida, I took Nystatin for 3 months to eliminate that fungus. Rather than try to follow very restrictive candida diets, because I already have 7 diagnosed food intolerance/allergies, I chose Nystatin, which was one of the recommended treatments for my specific strain of candida (indicated by my stool test results). For the... -
ARCHIVED Do Probiotics And Enzymes Help You For The Most Part?
burdee replied to sweeeeet's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I suggest abstaining from your diagnosed allergies/intolerances AND taking probiotics to restore gut health. Probiotics alone will not prevent or ease painful allergy/intolerance reactions to gluten or anything else. However many people with gluten intolerance or other food sensitivities also have depleted beneficial gut bacteria which can cause symptoms... -
ARCHIVED The Last _______ You Ate. Mmmmm.
burdee replied to thleensd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i don't even remember what I ate on my last gluten full day, because I was in sooo much pain. I suspect I ate shredded wheat and bran for breakfast, because I constantly struggled with constipation, which had been caused by gluten all along. I put lactose free milk on that cereal without realizing that I really was allergic to casein, the milk protein, rather...
