ARCHIVED Candida Diet
burdee replied to rose.88's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your doc won't test you for candida with a stool test, look for a naturopathic or holistic who will. You may not have candida or you may have a strain of candida which is not sensitive to (killed off by) garlic extract. My stool test results indicated which drugs or botanicals would kill my strain of candida. I took Nystatin for 2 months. I did not... -
Good Point! During the past 4 years I had 8 different gastro infections (5 bacteria, 2 parasites and candida) which caused my gut to remain bloated despite abstaining from my diagnosed intolerance/allergens gluten, dairy, soy, egg, cane sugar, nutmeg and vanilla. However, you may also have other digestive challenges, like deficiency of good bacteria...

ARCHIVED Nystatin Or Garlic Extract For Candida?
burdee replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm probably the one who said I successfully treated (eliminated) my candida with Nystatin, without following an anticandida diet. HOWEVER, I took a stool test to diagnose Candida. I didn't just guess from my symptoms that I might have that fungus. My stool test (Microbial Ecology Profile processed by Metametrix Labs) also indicated which drugs and/or botanicals... -
ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances Get Me Down
burdee replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, here's the recipe for eggfree mayonnaise: Add to blender: 1 cup whole (or chopped) raw (unsalted, unroasted) cashews; 1 cup hot water (helps soften the cashews); 1 tablespoon honey or agave; 1 teaspoon salt. Blend for at least one minute. I have an 'ice crusher' pulse mode on my blender which I use to finely grind the cashews for a... -
ARCHIVED Liver Enzyme Question
burdee replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Several of the drugs I took to treat pathogenic bacteria (like C-diff) and parasites (like Dientamoeba Fragilis) listed liver damage (problems?) as potential side effects. Fortunately my liver function tests have all been normal during the last 4 years while I was treating those 8 different 'gut bugs'. However my white blood cells were depleted (I'm too... -
ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances Get Me Down
burdee replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
With gluten, dairy, soy, vanilla and nutmeg I get gut cramps, bloating, constipation and sinus congestion (dairy only) within a few hours of ingestion. All those reactions last 1-2 weeks. Cane sugar causes almost instantaneous tachycardia which lasts for 48 hours and sometimes nausea which lasts a few hours. I don't recall egg reactions other than every time... -
ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances Get Me Down
burdee replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have diagnosed IgG mediated (delayed reaction) allergies to and abstain from dairy, soy, eggs, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg (as well as gluten intolerance). Fortuantely I wasn't diagnosed with everything all at once, because I might have felt overwhelmed and/or depressed by those 'limitations'. However, I prefer freedom from gut pain over food freedom... -
ARCHIVED Candida Diet
burdee replied to rose.88's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed with Candida by stool test. I took Nystatin, which completely eliminated my candida. (3 later successive stool tests were clear of candida.) I did not eliminate all sugar from my diet or follow any special anticandida diet. However, I did abstain from my diagnosed allergens (gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg). A few... -
ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth
burdee replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Maybe you just had so many bad gut bugs (bacteria and/or parasites) and took enough antiparasitic drugs that your good bacteria were outnumbered. I was diagnosed by DD stool test with Klebsiella in 2006 and successfully treated that with caprylic acid (coconut oil). I was diagnosed with Enterobacter Cloacae in 2008 and also successfully treated that with... -
ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth
burdee replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree. You mentioned 'bacterial overgrowth' results from the DD lab test. Which pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria was 'overgrown'? Which drugs or botanicals is that bacteria sensitive to (which one kills it)? I've heard Rifaximin prescribed as as an 'all purpose' antibiotic, but I don't believe that label. Unless your test results indicate the your specific... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Get The Gluten Symptoms From Antifungals?
burdee replied to jackay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Almost all treatments, whether drugs or botanicals, can have side effects. When I took caprylic acid for a bacterial infections, I suffered bloating, cramping pain, gas, and nausea. Those symptoms were similar to my gluten reactions, but not exactly the same. Since I abstained from gluten and my other diagnosed allergens, I realized my symptoms were reactions... -
ARCHIVED Igg Elisa Food Intolerance Testing...?
burdee replied to sb2178's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that there's a lot of confusion about 'allergies'. Some 'experts' believe only IgE mediated allergies are 'true' allergies and the IgG and IgA mediated reactions are only 'intolerances'. However, I wonder how they differentiate 'lactose intolerance', in which people lack lactase enzyme to digest lactose, from IgG mediated reactions. Lactose intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Igg Elisa Food Intolerance Testing...?
burdee replied to sb2178's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Did I say that?? My understanding is that gluten antibodies can attack any organ of the body and cause autoimmune reactions. See "Healthier Without Wheat" by Stephen Wangen, ND. I've heard theories about casein antibodies, but always believed what I read about gluten influencing autoimmune diseases. -
If your stomach couldn't produce enough acid to bring it back down to normal pH, you're probably have achloridia (your stomach doesn't produce hardly any stomach acid). In my capsule test, my stomach acid went down to normal pH 30-35 minutes after I drank the bicarb solution (alkaline). I did 5 bicarb challenges. So my stomach produces some acid (hypochloridia...

If 'colitis' means abdominal pain without diarrhea, I had lots of 'colitis' over the years. The only time I had cramping pain and diarrhea was when I had c-diff treatment. The antibiotic caused diarrhea, but I still had the pseudomembraneous colitis characteristic of c-diff. I have also had constipation more recently WITHOUT any pain. So I suspect my previous...

ARCHIVED Igg Elisa Food Intolerance Testing...?
burdee replied to sb2178's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My husband and I were both diagnosed with IgG mediated food allergies by the ELISA blood test. He purposely tested his reactions to diagnosed foods and experienced symptoms. I had already been diagnosed with gluten, dairy and soy intolerances by Enterolab stool tests and knew those gave me painful gastro reactions. So I didn't want to 'test' my other ELISA... -
Sorry. I missed your questions earlier. My parasites, bacteria and candida were diagnosed by Metametrix DNA microbial stool tests prescribed by my previous naturopath. Although he could read the test results suggestions for treating my specific bacteria or candida strains, he was clueless about treating parasites. He also gave me bad advice about taking probiotics...

ARCHIVED What Thyroid Tests Should We Order? & Another Disappointing Dr.
burdee replied to Tidings's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with your test suggestions. I had hypothyroid symptoms for YEARS (but no weight gain) and a TSH score that progressively climbed over that period (with one extremely low score amid the high results before it shot up higher than ever). My HMO doc never bothered to give me a free T4 and considered my TSH normal, because my HMO did not revise their... -
ARCHIVED Villi Absent
burdee replied to bincongo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you have reactions to 'lactose free' dressing, you may actually have casein (milk protein) allergy, rather than lactose (milk sugar) intolerance. If you're not sleeping well, your thyroid supplement dose may be too high now. I was told to get blood tests for thyroid function every 6-8 weeks while I'm on medication to monitor, as well as watch for symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Bloating After 10 Months Of gluten-free Diet?
burdee replied to glutenfreeinminnesota's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I continued to suffer bloating despite abstaining from gluten. After diagnoses of and abstaining from 6 other delayed reaction food allergies, I still had intestinal cramping and bloating. Then I was diagnosed with and treated for 8 successive gut infections (5 bacteria, 2 parasitic and candida). Afterwards I STILL had bloating after meals. I also had been... -
ARCHIVED Villi Absent
burdee replied to bincongo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You might also want to add TSH to see whether how your meds have changed those scores. Some members of this board may disagree, but I think ELISA tests are more effective for determining delayed reaction food allergies (IgG and IgA mediated antibodies) than elimination diets or skin tests (which only eliminate IgE or immediate reaction allergies). Guessing... -
ARCHIVED Villi Absent
burdee replied to bincongo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you had undiagnosed celiac disease for many years, you may be vulnerable to other autoimmune diseases as well as gastrointestinal problems. I'm 63 and was diagnosed with celiac disease at age 56, after years of gastro symptoms which were misdiagnosed as 'gastritis' or 'ibs. Despite abstaining from gluten, I continued to have gastro symptoms. So I did ELISA... -
The older you were when you were diagnosed, the greater chance you will have ongoing inflammation and villi blunting, after years of undiagnosed celiac damage. I'm taking L-glutamine to heal my gut inflammation, because I was diagnosed at age 56 and then had 8 gastrointestinal infections in the past 4 years. If you still have symptoms while eating a gluten...

Caffeine is one of the substances which can relax esophageal sphincter and cause reflux. So anyone with heartburn, reflux, etc. may want to substitute herbal teas. Even decaf coffee has enough caffeine to exacerbate heartburn for some people.

That refractory sprue label is often given to celiacs whose intestinal lesions do not heal in the expected time, despite strict adherence to the gluten-free diet. However, researchers have also discovered the people diagnosed later in life (and perhaps had long undiagnosed celiac disease) do NOT heal within 2 years. They speculate that older patients may...
