ARCHIVED Weird Ways We've Been Glutened
Lisa16 replied to OptimisticMom42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a short list: 1. vitamins. When I first started I was taking a multi and two days into gluten-free, I looked at the ingredients and it said "derived from wheat." 2. a banana bread lara bar OR the de-icer on the plane. I was going to HI and ate a larabar, once I was firly sure we would be taking off. We were delayed and, well... see the funny... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Anecdotes/funnies Re:celiac Disease
Lisa16 replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
So I am on a plane to Hawaii and I am having an attack. The plane has been delayed and we are sitting on the runway (bad timing for the attack but what can you do really?) I make multiple trips to the bathroom and at one point it looks like we are going to take off for real and the stewardess comes and pounds on the door, yelling "you have to return to... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Tests/neg Biopsies - What Now?
Lisa16 replied to SuzyQ2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do a search on each of these tests-- either on the board or on google. You will find lots of information about what each one measures and what the elevated numbers mean. Even wikipedia will have this. -
Italy is my favorite country in the whole world. I hope you can spend a little time in Rome. The tricky thing is finding a good hotel (look on Venere.com), but once you do you could spend the whole time in Rome alone. Some of the coolest museums are there-- I am especially fond of the Villa Giulia where they have the Etruscan artifacts. I love walking...

Celiac Disease And High Blood Pressure...
Lisa16 replied to Sheryl in NJ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thank you so much, Patti! I think this will help him a great deal. I can really identify with your story too. The disappointment and desperation! I took diuretics for about 10 years and developed a sulfite allergy (they all have sulphur in them). I lost weight, did exercise, acupuncture and even biofeedback. I took beta blockers, alpha... -
Well, you have to figure out which chemical is the culprit. Start with msg. You can buy it (the actually sell it as a flavor enhancer) or you can get a soup or a fish sauce that has it in it and eat a little bit. If you get the reaction, then you know. The same for nitrates and sulfites. If you go to the about.com site for food allergies and search...

ARCHIVED Positive Blood Tests/neg Biopsies - What Now?
Lisa16 replied to SuzyQ2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And getting another doctor is also taking a chance-- you don't know if the person is any good or not. It is very hard. I was misdiagnosed for over 23 years (before 2000) and I have been through every conceivable test, taken tons of medicines and hit the wall with the medical system more times than I care to count. Doctors definitely have their limitations... -
Celiac Disease And High Blood Pressure...
Lisa16 replied to Sheryl in NJ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Patty, do you happen to remember where you read about the insulin connection? I ask because my dad is now having trouble and I am hoping the article will help him. His blood sugar and bp are both too high. Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Tests/neg Biopsies - What Now?
Lisa16 replied to SuzyQ2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nothing harsh about it, gluten mommy-- except, perhaps, to the medical system :-) And that's okay in my book. They deserve it. Suzy-- I was in your exact same position in 2000. I had classic symptoms and high positives on the blood work (full panel IgG, IgA, tTg, etc.) and a negative biopsy (villi irritated, but not flattened.) They told me I did not... -
Celiac Disease And High Blood Pressure...
Lisa16 replied to Sheryl in NJ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Make that a "yes" for me too! I was having blood pressure spikes, which are gone now. In addition, the low carb diet was a great help. I do not take bp meds anymore, which is a good thing because I had a lot of trouble with them. I had worked through all of the classes of meds, except nitroglycerin (which I refused.) They either did not work or... -
Oh, I know this one! This is a food allergy reaction to MSG, sulfites/ sulfates and nitrates/nitrites-- in my case at least. There may be other things that do this to you guys in particular, but for me these are the culprits. It can actually feel like a sunburn and it shows up roughly 20-40 minutes after eating whatever it was. It might last a couple...

I actually wropte to the MN chapter of the organ donation people and asked about bone marrow. They never answered me back (outside of an auto-reply), which I took as a no. I don't think very much study has been done on certain aspects of this (like the marrow question). I read on a post here some time ago that because the marrow makes certain kinds...

ARCHIVED Should I Allow Myself To Get Glutened For My Trip To France?
Lisa16 replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you check your suitcase. I never do-- it was kind of a point of pride with me. Perhaps I will start. -
ARCHIVED Should I Allow Myself To Get Glutened For My Trip To France?
Lisa16 replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Or if circumstances allow it. Mango-- how on earth do you get the jar of peanut butter through security? I would love to know. -
ARCHIVED Doc Says No, I Say Yes
Lisa16 replied to crimsontopper's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you have been sick for a long time, you might want to consider that a diet featuring cheetos and kool aid may not be a very healthy thing to do for yourself. -
ARCHIVED Should I Allow Myself To Get Glutened For My Trip To France?
Lisa16 replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Going back to the original post-- Jason's-- I completely understand where you are coming from. It is very hard to travel even in the US where you speak the language when you are dealing with MULTIPLE food intolerances. No gluten and dairy in France? What? You don't speak French? Oh. You are very sensitive to cc issues? Okay. That IS a toughie. ... -
ARCHIVED Doc Says No, I Say Yes
Lisa16 replied to crimsontopper's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Consider too that it might be the food coloring or the sugar you sweetened it with. Food colorings (reds and yellows) get me and it is fast (less than 20 mins.) Also, if you haven't been gluten-free very long, it is possible your sugar is contaminated. If you baked a lot and used a cup measure to get flour and then put it in the sugar jar to get a... -
I also have an intolerance to sulfites, which makes vinegars and wines very hard. I have found that apple cider vinegar has the lowest sulfites. I also, as Ken suggests, use lime very often. So I make cucumber salad with lime juice, red onion, salt and pepper. But that won't help if it is the acidity. The sulfite intolerance will make your mouth and...

ARCHIVED Drambuie? Anybody Know?
Lisa16 replied to Lisa16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I used it for a chocolate cake with glazed pecans (also with drambuie) and it did NOT zap me. It must be safe Yes, it really has a very nice flavor and the cake turned out well. Lisa -
ARCHIVED Chips, Crackers, Etc
Lisa16 replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I recently found a brand called "food should taste good." They have crackers and chips that are tested and certified gluten-free. Their stuff is pretty good. I also make my own crackers (recipe on website) and potato chips (had to buy a deep ryer and a machine.) Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Wax On Fruit And Veggies
Lisa16 replied to nauseatingnancy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I posted a letter from the CA citrus growers association awhile back, which also suggested this is possible. However, they did say that the gluten-containing waxes were more expensive and therefore not used very much. Wash your fruit and veggies before you eat them! This is a good practice anyway. -
ARCHIVED Cosmetic Gluten Nightmare!
Lisa16 replied to Mi55-E's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are currently two brands (owned by the same parent company) that say all of their products are gluten free. NARS and Shisheido. Smashbox is pretty good, with most everything safe but the mascara. If you do a search here you will find lots of lists of gluten-free makeups. I posted a list of safe things from korres a while back-- the lipbalm is... -
Gosh, today must be your lucky day to ask the question because the Gluten Free Girl website just did a whole post on canning, complete with instructional videos. Open Original Shared Link Good luck!

Yes indeed, bunny! That is the one I meant. Good catch (not annoyed at all.) Did you know that pineapples are a member of that epiphyte family? I believe the extract is taken from that source (thus the mix-up.)

ARCHIVED Zojirushi And Betterbatter?
Lisa16 replied to Truleesmom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I ordered a box of the better batter and to tell you the truth, I was not impressed and will not be ordering it again. I have also tried the Jule's nearly normal, the Tom Sawyer and the Domata flours. Of all of the flours I hands down prefer the domata for texture, reliability and moisture management. I use the flours to make cakes, do rolls and batter...
