  1. Thank you for posting this. Maybe all those times I thought it was the tortilla chips it was really the darn salsa. Hmph!
  2. I believe there is a relationship to celiac and gall bladder dysfunction. I have never seen a good explanation of the relationship, but I suspect it is rather common for celiacs to be diagnosed with gallbladder disease. In the absence of stones I wish they would test for other things before operating. I am having a hard time figuring out how long...
  3. Gluten Dairy (casein) Nitrates/ites Sulfates/ites MSG Pistachios (maybe almonds too now) Fibrous vegetables (like lettuce) unless cooked to death Some food colors (reds and yellows) I am down to fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh meats, potatoes, rice and legumes. The only processed gluten-free foods I buy are peanut butter, frozen waffles and gluten...
  4. IN the US there are only a few food colors (7) certified by the FDA. Two or three of them have been banned in other countries and there are consumer groups that feel strongly that these dyes contribute to autism, epilepsy, ADHD and any number of other disorders in children. Just look on wikipedia and you will find a place to start. These dyes and their...
  5. I forgot to say a couple of things-- -Check your sponges. They hold gluten. -check your dishwashing soap and laundry detergent -do you bake with regular flour? That stuff moves! -check handsoap in the bathroom-- if other people use it to wash their hands after eating gluten and she uses it, she will have gluten residue on her hands Honestly...
  6. Maybe try this checklist. Is you entire household gluten-free? Do you have pets that eat gluten? If your household is mixed, what practices are in place to avoid cross contamination (CC)? Are other members of the household aware of CC issues or are the lax? Do you have other children that are not gluten-free? Did you go through your...
  7. Lipstick: Chanel (all lpstick and gloss okay) Clinique (some) Nars (whole line is gluten-free) Smashbox (everything but mascara) EcoNvey (no gluten ingredients) Lancome (some) T. Leclerc (whole line appears to be gluten-free) Guerlain (see list posted here) 100% pure (go through makeup.com or their own website-- everything but mascara) Shisheido...
  8. TK-- questions of whether or not you can absorb gluten through the skin aside, it is possible to have gluten intolerance and/or celiac AND be allergic to wheat, barley, etc. You can have both conditions. I don't thrink pricking the skin with it is quite the same as a topical reaction because they are putting it into your bloodstream. If I am wrong...
  9. Elonwy-- I once made a moderately successful baklava using those vietnamese tapioca wraps as filo. The only problem is it tends to get hard fast, so you have to eat them the first day. I soaked them until they got soft, brushed them with butter, filled them with the honey-nut mixture and baked the whole she-bang. The first day it was great. The second...
  10. I took a gluten-free baking class and the lady used chebe for everything. She was even selling it afterwards because if you order 16 cases from the company you get a price break. That's a lot of chebe. The secret is to use a tablespoon of baking soda instead of the teaspoon on the package on al varieties. That will help a lot. However, the ingredients...
  11. RDR-- Oh, it is good with chicken! Then yesterday my parent's came to visit and we had it on tempura shrimp. Because it is fresh it is nicer than anything rom a bottle (and tons safer! I can't do msg.) Be sure to play with the vinegar, sugar and xanthan gum to get the taste and texture you want. I would start out conservatively and then gradually...
  12. Oh, I think it is fairly common but people aren't brave enough to talk about it. In my case, after 18 months of being gluten-free, I do not get DH much at all. The last time I got it in the area was after a major glutening a few months after going gluten-free. Since then I had a couple of small outbreaks on arms, hands and feet from lesser glutenings...
  13. Hi Digimom! Well, I googled the MAgnolia Grill and Crook's Corner both and they are both still cooking. You can get their menus off the websites, and I see several possibilities. I would call ahead and talk to them and if they can do a safe celiac meal, I would eat all my meals with one of them or do some kind of split with dinners there and lunches...
  14. Yes indeed, this can happen I am sorry you get it in this area. For me, this is one of many areas where it can happen. The first time I really freaked out and thought my beloved of 7 years had given me herpes. But of course, it tested negative for that. So what could it be? Well.... there weren't too many other possibilities. Horrible, painful and...
  15. Here is a recipe for a sweet and sour sauce: Into a sauce pan (and strain as you go) put: The juice of two large oranges 1 cup of fresh pineapple juiced in a food processor the juice from
  16. Fabulous topic! -take a bunch of slippery elm, papain enzyme, bromeliad, glutenzyme, vitamins and teas -eat whole cloves to control spastic burping, GAS-EX FOR SPASTIC OTHER EMISIONS -look at garden books or house decorating books and dream of future plans -paint or draw a picture of your pain -take a long, hot bath with bath bombs or bubbles or salts...
  17. It has been many years since I was there (1997! My info is as old as my doctorate!) but at that time they had a great Whole Foods Grocery store by the mall. At the time I wasn't diagnosed, but there were some great restaurants there. The other grocery stores were Harris Teeter and Food Lion, in addition to the co-op mentioned-- you can look online and...
  18. It is considered a disability (this is how parents can get safe school lunches for their kids.) Many people on this board are drawing social security disability. There is also a staggering number of people on this board who are determined that it is not a disability. I believe these folks are in some kind of denial stage of the disease. You should...
  19. There are infinite variations you can do with this too. I like to make a teriaki burger by adding a little sesame oil, chopped green onions, soy sauce,a smootch of brown sugar, salt and pepper. I like this with a sweet and sour sauce. And if you want a nice breakfast sandwich, you can take two gluten-free waffles, put some gluten-free sausages on them...
  20. Raisin-- I know of a couple of lines that are completely gluten-free. Of course, they are pricey. Nars-- everything Shiseido-- owned by Nars 100% pure-- only the mascara is not t. LeClerc tells me all of their makeup is too Smashbox (all but mascara) EcoNvey (no gluten ingredients) Chanel says all lipsticks and glosses are Some Clinique is...
  21. Oh, you are not alone! In my wilder youth I dated a beligian for a couple of years. He used to call this (and I am probably butchering the French) Steak hache grille (accent on the e's, which he pronounced.) So you are really doing a very sophisticated French thing! Let them look and learn.
  22. Once (a blister popped and got infected.) But mostly mine was misdiagnosed as shingles. I had "shingles" three different times within a short period. A dermatologist figured it out. That's how I got diagnosed. Smart dermatologist.
  23. I think this is a perfectly good question-- but it is from the point of view of somebody who is gluten free already and figured it out by themself. I take my hat off to you for self-diagnosing! Would I had been smart enough to do that! I would have had a very different life. I agree with you that if you are already gluten free there is no point in the...
  24. I got swollen lymph nodes in my neck too. I think it is celiac related. I panicked and went in and they ran a bunch of tests-- the doctor said it was one of the major nodes in the neck. Nothing. Then the swollen nodes went away. They come back from time to time. I wouldn't worry unless the person has them for a long time.
  25. Happy Birthday (a little late)! And thank you for everything you do here. Hope it was a great birthday!
