  1. Ha! You guys crack me up. You had best stay away from the "tickle me elbow" thread then.... those folks are doing some crazy thing with spelling!
  2. I have a recipe for cheese crackers that I got from this board a couple fo years ago. It is from Sweetfudge, who is a great cook. These are like goldfish cracker or cheez-its. Maybe you could use a cookie-cutter to shape them. -2 Tbsp. butter -1 egg -Pinch each of salt and chili powder -1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, finely grated -1 tsp. xanthan...
  3. Thanks for the larenim link! Yes, that skindeep database is really scary. When I first found it I spent hours logging in all the products I use on a regular basis. Woo! It's a wonder I did not spontaneously combust from all those chemicals!! It definitely changed some of the products I use (I now have a "toxicity limit" that I allow for individual...
  4. I also color my hair, which leaves it very dry. That is not as harsh as relaxing it... you almost need a super conditioner for that. I have had some perms in my life-- I imagine they do a similar number on your hair (it is just the reverse of the process, in a way). I have thick wiry reddish hair with some wave that tends to "frizz out" and it is very...
  5. I think that it is more a question of who is eating wheat. Celiac is not as prevalent in cultures that are not wheat-based. But when they start eating it, then it appears. It strikes people of every race and ethnicitiy. It is a "human thing"-- or maybe a "wheat thing" rather than a "race thing."
  6. The skinstore and sephora also list ingredients online in a bigger font. Remember that NARS and Shisheido are 100% gluten free lines. Smashbox is also pretty good (only a few products have gluten) as is 100% pure (sold online at Makeup.com, their own website and QVC.) You have to watch out for their mascaras. I also had to get bifocals a few...

    ARCHIVED Sulfites

Thank you for moving this up! There are many, many people in the forum who have sulfite sensitivity/allergy. I get the red face and chest as well as swelling of the throat, tongue and joints. I avoid them like the plague, but I learned somethings here which I did not know-- like the corn syrup (no wonder I could not tolerate it!) and the sorbitol...
  8. I know what you mean. There is also the theory that women are actually "tougher" than men in the sense that we are built to be the last standing (for reproductive purposes, one assumes) and can take more pain and survive illness better (they say our hormones protect us from heart disease, say). We also have a higher percentage of body fat, which is...
  9. This is tricky because so many people are undiagnosed. I read that more women than men develop celiac disease, but that men tend to get sicker from it. But perhaps what this really means is that a man has to get pretty ill before they even consider testing for it? Maybe it is part of that whole macho-thing of men not complaining/ telling doctors they...
  10. I was first diagnosed with IBS-D in 1984 after alredy being sick for a number of years. The thing that ticks me off about it is that I was repeatedly told "there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. You will have to learn to live with it. But the good news is that IBS does not affect your overall health." So I lived with it. It got worse. I...
  11. Yep-- you are right! I looked up the last ingredient (sodium caseinate) and discovered it is milk-derived. And here I thought it was just a preservative chemical. Wow. Sorry (I plead chemical ignorance!) Well, at least the concentration is really low. Tiffany, I suspect you are right about the trace amount thing-- as far as I know, I have never gotten...
  12. Yes, I used to get the same tingling/shooting sensation you describe. The good news is that my DH is gone-- I have not had it in well over a year (will be gluten-free 2 years in December.) I would get the lesions within a couple of hourse of being glutened. Now I think I would have to eat something with major gluten (like a slice of bread) to get an...
  13. I cook with this a lot. I am also CF and my sig. other is from Sri Lanka, where many dishes are coconut-based. I have a bunch of recipes that use it on my blog (linked to my profile here). Mostly they are shrimp and chicken dishes because he will not eat pork or beef (he is Buddhist.) Oh yeah-- the kind we get is from Thailand and it comes in a big...
  14. There are lots of us with this problem: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=55172 https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=42987 There is more if you search. In addition, there are several posts on wines. Lots of people have trouble with them, apart from sulfites.
  15. Ah, but how did it end up on our heroe's shoe? And was it just a short bit or was it one of those long, trailing streamers? The public wants to know!
  16. You can make a risotto out of them. Basically, you make up the risotto as you usually would, and you add fried mushrooms to it. I slice them in a big wok or frying pan with 2-3 sliced cloves of garlic and olive oil. At some point the mushrooms will relaease their water. That is the time to add sherry or whatever flavor you like. Keep cooking them...
  17. Here is the link for buying hookworms. A bargain at $2,900! Open Original Shared Link It looks like you can also infest yourself with whipworms. Unbelievable.
  18. NPR did a piece on this yesterday, but they didn't mention celiac. They mentioned asthma and chrons. And they interviewed a man who went to Africa and intentionally infected himself by walking barefoot through a squalid poo-infested area for his terrible hayfever. It worked! At least that's what the man said. That man is now selling hookworks to...
  19. Dear Jensey, I do not know how old you are, but judging from the language of your letter you are certainly old enough to make your own health decisions. I am 43 and I went undiagnosed for over 23 years. I got very sick. If I get even a microscopic amount of gluten from cross-contamination I am sick for days. It is so painful I would never knowingly...
  20. Ah, but little does our hero JV know that Pam's father (the noted proctologist Sigmund Escopy Flush) is actually his biological half brother, resulting from Wiwi's highschool crush on the star quarterback Runfer I.T. Flush. Siggy was raised by his paternal grandparents as their own son and he grew up calling his father bruz Runfer. JV has no idea...
  21. Oh my fellow sillies.... it is a grey and rainy fall day here. Perhaps it is time, yet again, for a round of silliness. Anybody want to play? Let's write a sopa opera! For starters one of the leading men can be J. Virilevilli, the devastatingly handsome GI who is secretly addicted to a potentially lethal cocktail of peptabismal and Icommodium. He...
  22. Tarnalberry-- thank you very much for responding to the video. I was hoping to get some other people's reactions to it as it has bothered me since I saw it yesterday. I was not sure why, but my thoughts kept going back to it. Not the tragedy of it, although that is indelible, but rather the "why" of reporting it. I think you put your finger on exactly...
  23. Here is a viral (ha!) video that is making the rounds on youtube. It appears to be a legitimate news broadcast. This, if true, is absolutely horrifying. Open Original Shared Link No wonder people are afraid of getting flu shots! They would rather risk the flu than this. I am in the "not" category myself, and not because of this video --even though...
  24. Here is an older thread about hot choclate mixes. It might not have the most up-to-date info, but it is a place to start. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...mp;#entry345458
  25. Well, now they have their four proofs. Good luck with your recovery! May you soon be happier, healthier and much stronger. Lisa
