  1. Thanks! Now is one of those times I wish I had a test kit. I will take it as safe, but watch for a reaction the next time I make a cake.
  2. So I am about to bake a cake and I was going to flavor it with some drambuie. I looked on old lists and threads here, and people are saying it is gluten free. HOWEVER, I see on the label it says "made from malt whiskey." Wooo. I am going to make this cake tonight with cointreau instead, but that bottle of drambuie is sitting there and it goes best...
  3. I had an excellent experience with one a few years back. He was extremely knowledgeable about celiac and we did a specific carb diet type thing for awhile. He was very supportive and I learned a lot and lost weight (20+ lbs.). Kept a journal, became aware of other allergies and really started to recover. I loved my guy. He was technically a specialist...
  4. Congratulations! And may your last semester be wonderful.
  5. You have gotten some good advice here so far. Doctors cannot help you if you get glutened. There is nothing they can do and it must just run its course. So if she gets some, I wouldn't run to the doctor for help. Running the bloodwork again is not helpful either. You already know she has celiac disease. And yes indeed, the effects of a single glutening...

    ARCHIVED Light Cases Of Celiac

I think you are experiencing a mild reaction to cc (cross contamination). Maybe the cheese had come into contact with bread or was on a cutting board used for bread, maybe whoever handled it had touched gluten before, etc. And even thought the steak sauce might have been fine, perhaps the steak was not (grilled on a contaminated pan/ grill, etc.) There...
  7. Here is a list of stuff that I eat on a regular basis-- it is my gluten-free/cf/low sulfite/ low nitrate grocery shopping list. I will divide stuff into food groups. I cook everyday: lifestream gluten-free buckwheat waffles (I use these as bread sometimes) white and brown rice, sometimes a small red variety almond milk (non-sweetened and sweetened...
  8. Add my name to the list! When the celiac was at its worst (right before diagnosis) I would get GPC (giant papillary conjuntivitis), which was explained to me as an auto-immune problem of the lining of the eye. I have scarring from this and have been told I can never wear contacts again. I also had chronic dry eye that the doctors couldn't find a cause...
  9. I felt sorry for Anita Lo, who was the clear favorite to win. Her poor eggplant was sitting in a puddle of oil and that artistic smear of cashew paste looked bad. Poor lady. When they said no soy, she withered up-- yep, the limitations got her. I forgot about the beet salad Keller made-- the recipe for that is on the Bravo site, as well as for the mango...
  10. I will definitely try to get my hands on the magazine-- thanks for the tip! It sounds like one I would enjoy. BTW, your friend Roy was on an earlier episode. They wouldn't let him cook with soy sauce for the first challenge (he had to stick to stuff from only one aisle of the supermarket) and you could tell it hurt him. Then he had to do a main dish...
  11. Oh it was wonderful! Five top chef masters had to prepare a vegan meal that was also gluten free and soy free. There was complaining. "Oh! This pasta is weird," "I am not comfortable cooking for allergies!" But two guys (the top two scores of course,) had gluten-free people in their families. The guy who lost (Art Smith) went down for using...
  12. Because of the shared lines issue, I never use the dried ones (from the Indian grocery). Plus they often have little stones in them that you have to be careful of. I buy the organic canned ones from the halth food store and have been safe so far. I eat them mixed with rice quite often. The brand we have here is called "full circle," but there are...
  13. Good for you! Good for all of us! This could be one of those landmark cases. I love a fighter! You are now my official hero. Keep up the good work! And thanks for keeping us posted.
  14. Yes-- it can occur on just one side.
  15. I found this by googling "Disabilities Act and Education" and there is contact information here: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (formerly called P.L. 94-142 or the Education for all Handicapped Children Act of 1975) requires public schools to make available to all eligible children...
  16. Oh I am so sorry. If this had happened to me I would be more than angry. And I have a bad feeling this kind of thing happens a lot. Here are some places to try: The GA attorney general's office (write a letter) A legal firm that does pro-bono work (call everybody in the book) The Affirmative Action Office at KSU (file a complaint) The American...
  17. Stress gets me too. I remember once (before diagnosis) I crunched my finger in a door (broke it) and before going to the ER, I had to run for the bathroom immediately. Good lord! Celiac stinks. So does stress. Hopefully you will recover with a little TLC. Cut out as much of the stress as you can. Maybe this means not answering the phone, checking...
  18. Happy Birthday from Lake Wobegone! May all of your men be good looking and your children be above average!
  19. Like you I was misdiagnosed for a long time-- 23 years. I have been gluten-free only 1.5 years now and I still have some joint pain, but it is much better. I suspect that it may be one of the last things to go or that it might not go away completely. I also suspect that the longer you had it, the longer it will take to go. In me it hit the knees...
  20. If you are having a reaction and losing hair, pitch those products ASAP! Safe internationally marketed mascaras (order online from Sephora or the company itself): NARS Shisheido Guerlain (google my post here for specific ones) T. LeClerc wrote and told me all their makeup is gluten-free-- (double check label as info may be old) They will cost...
  21. Perhaps it is a question of how sensitive you are. I do not eat out anymore because I get glutened over 50% of the time. Sometimes it was slight, from cc, and sometimes it has been full blown bad in the b-room for 3 hours. The reactions are different for me, which is how I know- slight cc only produces painful burps which last for 5 hours or so. I...
  22. Thanks for the laugh!~ Gemini-- Douglas Adams wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe books that were extremely popular in the 1980s. At least one was made into a movie.
  23. RDR-- I am so glad you are having so much fun and success with these dishes! Good for you!
  24. I am guessing it is the gene called DQ7. Genes have an alpha and a beta part. The DQ7 shares one of these parts (can't remember which) with the DQ2, which is the gene commonly associated with celiac. The DQ7 was found in something like 2% of European celiacs in one study (with DQ2 and DQ8 being absent.) I have the DQ7 (no 2 or 8) and I have been diagnosed...
  25. Alrighty then. Can we get some good salsa recipes please?
