ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Think the heels thru, think the heels thru... Hmm, heels require thinking eh? Not in my neck of the woods they don't! Well, your outfit does sound like it will be more flashy and colorful. You can always paint the boot heels a different color tho, no problem doing that every day in fact. No Scotch for me. Maybe a little bourbon or rum. Or some... -
ARCHIVED Anxious Every Time I Come To Work!
GFinDC replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I worked in the Pentagon they would decorate the doors of the office spaces for Christmas. Right around Christmas week there would be little office parties going on fairly often. People just like to celebrate Christmas and the holiday season. Kimbalou is a grinch if you ask me. Hail to the Grinch! Just kidding Kimbalou! I thought working... -

ARCHIVED Fading Fast. And I'm Just Getting Started :(
GFinDC replied to Cderbogh's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Celiac disease can cause gut paint, I wonder it that was the cause instead of high acid levels? Celiac attacks the villi lining of the small intestine, so it can damage a large surface area of tissue. That can hurt. Since your pain resolved after going gluten-free, it seems ilkely gluten was the cause, IE celiac disease or gluten intolerance perhaps? -

ARCHIVED Diagnosing A Lactose Intolerence
GFinDC replied to Adalaide's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You are making this too easy IH. How are we going to build character and intestinal fortitude in the members if they can just take a simple test? Adelaide, sorry, I assumed you already knew about the hydrogen test for lactose intolerance. -
I wouldn't listen to that doctor anymore either. It always makes sense to check things out for yourself I think, and verify what they tell you.

Hi M-Rods, 6 weeks is great start on the gluten-free diet. A research study a while back did show that many celiac patients on the gluten-free diet did not return to completely normal gut condition after 18 months. Improved yes, but normal, no. Maybe they were normal for celiacs though. Many members here have reported becoming more sensitive to gluten...

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance Question Please Help Im Confused Whats Happening
GFinDC replied to Jrose3009's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI, It sounds like you have Hashimoto's Thyrioditis or Graves disease? Either one could cause symptoms like the racing heart, eyes feeling swollen. and other things you described. Graves is a condition where the thyroid puts out too much thyroid hormone and ramps up the body metabolism too much. Hashimoto's causes damage to the thyroid and can cause... -
ARCHIVED Confusion About Gluten Intolerance
GFinDC replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sarah, It is better for the GI to take multiple biopsy samples during the endoscopy. 5 to 8 is not bad. Sometimes they only take one biopsy sample and sometimes none. I suggest you talk to the GI before hand and make sure that he knows you are expecting testing for celiac disease and multiple biopsy samples are ok. Some GI's aren't up to speed... -
Elevated liver enzymes are associated with untreated celiac disease. You can find several threads here about it. Some people said their levels returned to normal after being on the gluten-free diet awhile.

ARCHIVED Im New And Confused And Need Some Help And Advice.
GFinDC replied to mum24boys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mum24boys, Celiac can cause children to be short and not grow. So getting the kid tested is a good idea. Thyroid problems are linked with celiac, especially Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. But I don't know of a reason thyroid would cause your stomach to be irritated. Low thyroid levels can cause slow digestion though. Have you been tested for wheat... -
ARCHIVED Frequent Regurgitation, gluten-free For 2 Years
GFinDC replied to megansmommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Megan's Mommy, I used to have that problem fairly often even after going gluten-free. Sometimes I wouldn't be able to swallow food or it would come back up after a short while. I had to eliminate some other foods before it stopped. I also had problems with H. Pylori repeatedly. If the antacids aren't helping, please take her off them. Low stomach... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed 6 Months Ago Still Having Problems
GFinDC replied to gemini1962's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi gemeni1962, Do check out the newbie 101 thread for hints, it is listed below and the forums near the top. Cross contamination is a possible issue. Vitamins and meds, drinks, spices blends etc all need to be gluten-free. It is very easy to miss something when you start out on the gluten-free diet. Whole foods are better than processed foods (even... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosing A Lactose Intolerence
GFinDC replied to Adalaide's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Adelaide, You may have to wait a while and then test dairy again. But test by eating plain hard cheese, not anything with lactose. That way you are eating mostly casein. You could take a couple lactaid pills with it if you want. If the cheese makes you sick, then it is probably a casein issue. If ti doesn't make you sick, keep eating the cheese... -
ARCHIVED Could This Be Celiac?
GFinDC replied to ampmomof3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The 2 weeks off gluten before testing could have an impact on the test results. No way to know for sure a this point. That's good their hands aren't swollen. My feet and ankles swell when I eat something my body doesn't like. I used to have deep crease lines around my ankles at the end of each day when I took my socks off. So that's something to check... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Doing ok here LJ. Thanks for asking. The anti-histamines didn't end me up in Maryland, but I can see that being possible. Actually I was driving that day, but only a mile and a half. So not a problem. And I didn't get sleepy till after I arrived, so no problem there either. Falling asleep in the oil paint would certainly be colorful! So far that... -
ARCHIVED Confusion About Gluten Intolerance
GFinDC replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sarah, There is no guarantee you will get accurate test results in the best of cases. So we can't tell you for sure what amount of gluten will be needed for you to get a positive result, vs another person with a different immune system. We aren't all the same. Our immune systems are individual and can react differently. But your doctor or your endocrinologist... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Saving the tests and possible stress for later sounds like a good plan LJ. It's good to have something to look forward to? Of course in 6 to 12 months you may have all your food issues figured out without any tests, and not need them. What a shame that would be! Well, if the plastic suits don't work they do make regular cloth coveralls like welders... -
ARCHIVED So Sick! Is The Gluten Challenge Worth It?
GFinDC replied to txgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If the gluten challenge for testing is worth it depends on how you think about it. If you need a piece of paper from a doctor's office to tell you not to eat gluten, then it is probably worth it. Be aware though that the results can still be negative even after a 3 month challenge. And if you develop a permanent issue from the challenge that doesn't resolve... -

ARCHIVED Starting 4Th Week Gluten-Free . . .
GFinDC replied to DieWalkure's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Right, it's not just that they eat gluten, they end up wearing it on their fur. My cat does much better with gluten-free food too. She eats BG (Before Grain) food. If I switch her to regular cat food with grains in it she gets sick every time. -
ARCHIVED Confusion About Gluten Intolerance
GFinDC replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sarah, It can be very confusing when starting out. Often people recommend 2 slices of bread a day for testing purposes. If you can stay with a regular gluten diet until the testing is done that is best. The tests are not perfect and if the antibodies are dropping you are less likely to get accurate test results. It is better not to start the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Help For My Husband
GFinDC replied to Katty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Katy, Yes, it is possible his digestion will be unsettled for the next year or more. It is also possible it will get right as rain in a month or so. Sticking with whole foods is one way to speed up the healing process. Adding lots of new things right now is not great idea really. If you are adding things make sure to only add one new thing a day...
