  1. I think it is easy to be a little over concerned about gluten contamination at first. When people are new to the gluten-free diet especially, and they suddenly start having to be aware of minute, invisible traces of something that can make them sick, they may get a little over zealous about it for a while. That kind of goes along with the "I see celiacs...
  2. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips: Don't eat in restraunts Eat only whole foods not processed foods. Eat only food you cook yourself, think simple foods, not gourmet meals. Take probiotics. Take digestive enzymes. Avoid dairy. Avoid sugars and starchy foods. Avoid alcohol. Some threads with good info: FAQ Celiac com https...
  3. You can also install and use Mozilla Firefozx and add noscript to it. Noscript blocks all web site scripts unless you allow them to run. So you can prevent unscrupulous sites from adding junk to you computer.
  4. Hi Vincent, Good for him, 4 days is great! Older plastic that is all scratched up may be hard to clean. but a smooth plastic surface should be fine. Plastic is pretty impervious unless it is old and beat up/scratched up. Most metal is easy enough to clean also. I scrubbed my stainless steel pots with steel wool and then boiled soapy water...
  5. I went grain-free for a while. It didn't seem to make any real difference for me except for rice. White rice did a number on me, but that is probably a sugar related problem not due to the grain aspect so much, but the fast acting carbs. Grains are often used in baked goods and can have blood sugar affects due to the glycemic index being high. So you...
  6. Hi, The allergy tests are looking for an igE reaction. IgE is a type of immune cell. There are other types like IgG and IgA. Those types are more the problem with celiac disease. IgE cells cause the hayfever typoe symptoms and can be life threatening due to anaphylaxis (sp). So if he has a true allergy that is dangerous thing to keep feeding him...
  7. Sorry Jenni, I wasn't trying to be negative with the gold star comment. I know about the food reimbursement in England. It's perfectly ok to get the endoscopy if you want it. Sometimes doctors ask people to go back on gluten for 3 months after being off it to do the endoscopy. That's kind of barbaric IMHO. Some schools do make accomodations for children...
  8. It could be an H.Pylori infection. They have test for that you can get at your doctor. A natural treatment is mastic gum, but it is not an overnight cure or anything. You have to take if for a month or more. Why not take the dairy back out and see if it helps? That is the only way to know. When I had an ulcer in my upper left stomach I would lay...
  9. Welcome Rick and puppies! You are in the right place, this is the best source of info on celiac disease and gluten-free eating around. I was going to suggest you get your thyroid checked also as thyroid problems are common with celiac. There is something called Hashimoto's thyroiditis that we sometimes get. Hashi's is an autoimmune condition that...
  10. Hah, yep, I am getting the idea on the So Delicious items. There is also Tempt brand hemp milk available in some stores. Here's the microwave bun thread/recipe I mentioned before. It's pretty long but there are a lot of alternatives people suggested for it. Easy yumy bread in minutes lonewolf The Tempt milk is hemp derived but doesn't have any...
  11. What they should be embarrassed about is that they had to add vitamins to white bread, because the processing of wheat flour removed any nutritional value from the flour. So it is basically worthless junk people are eating without the vitamins added to it. They basically put a vitamin pill in wheat bread so it would be sellable to people and not cause them...
  12. I can do a just a small amount of dairy but don't eat it regularly and don't buy it. It just doesn't work out too well for me. But there are plenty of options for dairy substitutes around these days. Some studies have said up to 18 months for healing of the villi. There is also the issue of gut flora being re-establsihed to process dairy. Probiotics...
  13. Hopefully you are writing down a food log every day of your symptoms and what you ate. Your doctor should be able to read that and figure out something. What do you hope to gain by the endoscopy? There is no gold star for having your celiac endoscopically verified. The treatment is the same, follow the gluten-free diet. The usual recommendation is to...
  14. Hi, Dairy free means all dairy ingredients. Casein, whey, and lactose are common names for dairy ingredients in foods. Milk is one of the top 8 food allergens so if it should always be listed in the ingredients if present or called out in an allergy note at the bottom of the ingredients listing. 15. I wouldn't try dairy again so soon. The body doesn't heal overnight. He needs some time to adjust to his new diet and also get back to feeling better. Dairy is not going to help with that. If he had symptoms from dairy, it would be better to wait a couple months at least. Just my opinion, free so you know what they say about free advice. There are...
  16. HI Robert, You could also be reacting to other foods. Nightshades cause reactions in some of us (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant), some have problems with corn or eggs, or rice, etc. We can become sensitive to many different foods. Those other sensitivities may go away after a period of time on the gluten-free diet. Sometimes they don't though...
  17. Another option is Tempt brand hemp milk. Regardiing the barley in Rice Dream, there was an article posted a while ago about gluten testing for barley. The article said the testing methods we have now don't detect barley gluten very well. So they may test it and get a negative reading but that negative reading could be wrong. The tests give unreliable...

    ARCHIVED Help!

If you do a search on the brand name and gluten free you will probably find your answer. When you are starting out it is good to eat simple foods, not lots of spices and sauces etc. Some tips below. Not eating in restaraunts Eating only whole foods not processed foods. Eating only food you cook yourself, think simple foods, not gourmet meals...
  19. Hi Vincent, I think you are right, he had it all along but wasn't feeling symptoms. There are a couple of people on the forum now who have celiac but don't experience any GI symptoms from it. Silent celiac is the term they use when people have celiac but don't have symptoms. Their celiac was discovered by "accident" when being tested for other conditions...
  20. HI Unhappy, There are many people that have more than one condition, especially with autoimmune diseases. So not seeing improvement with Meniere's after going gluten-free doesn't mean you don't have celiac disease. If you have celiac you need to stay gluten-free regardless of how your Meniere's symptoms act.
  21. Hi Vincent, Food allergies are important to test for, as they can cause plenty of symptoms, some of them severe. Food intolerances are a separate thing and they can also cause many symptoms, but there are not many good tests for them. You won't find out about food intolerances by doing allergy testing. The food intolerance tests I am aware of are...
  22. HI, IMHO it's very normal to have back and forth days, especially when starting out. You can try to improve things by: Not eating in restaraunts Eating only whole foods not processed foods. Eating only food you cook yourself, think simple foods, not gourmet meals. Taking proboitics. Taking digestive enzymes. Avoiding dairy. Avoiding sugars and...
  23. There is lots of food to eat. Some ideas below: FAQ Celiac com https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/forum-7/announcement-3-frequently-asked-questions-about-celiac-disease/ What's For Breakfast Today? What Did You Have For Lunch Today? What Are You Cooking Tonight?
  24. You can be intolerant to very, very many foods. However some people are intolerant to a food for a time and then after that can eat it again without problems. So it may not be permanent. Testing every 8 months to a year or so is not a terrible idea.
  25. Ok, you might want to try some Betaine HCL a couple times a week. And some proboitics. Betaine HCL turns to stomach acid in your tummy, and can get rid of nasty bacteria that may have taken up lodging there. Sometimes people are low on stomach acid. Also some mastic gum once in a while may help. It has been used for centuries to aid digestion. Staying...
