  1. Seems the tornadoes are starting early this year. Hard to say for sure if it is related to global warming. But it seems odd. We have dogwoods, crocuses, daffodils, hyacinth and forsythia blooming here in DC. No girls in bikinis yet, but they can't be far behind. Maple trees are budding and the maple sap flow is over already, at least in Ohio.
  2. You could also take your hand mixer to a garage and ask them to blow it out with their air compressor. Any car garage that does repairs is likely to have an air compressor. 90 lbs of compressed air will move most dust pretty quick. You might find one in a wood working shop also. Or a place that does air brushing on cars or t-shirts. I have one in my...
  3. Hi OxyM, I would suspect other food intolerances beyond gluten before considering lupus. There are many of us who have additional food intolerances and get various symptoms from them. Having a leaky gut can lead to that I think, especially when it is injured by celiac. There is a higher incidence of some autoimmune diseases with celiac. You can find...
  4. Probioitics are human compatible bacteria strains that help our digestion. They live in the gut and do friendly bacteria stuff there. I take a pro-biotic from Jarrow Formulas, but there are lots of different ones available. Some people make yogurt and sauerkraut at home and eat that for the bacteria in it. Activia is supposed to have live bacteria in...
  5. Hi Caroline, Time to get better depends on a lot of things. I have been on the gluten-free diet for over 4 years and really am doing much better so far this year. I have had some problems with fatigue though and digestion. I realized at long last that I can't handle grapes of any kind, so I ditched those from my diet and things improved. Then I woke...
  6. Open Original Shared Link You mean we are not all the same? I absolutely agree Alice. My last ex quit smoking cigarettes. The way she did it was by promising herself she could smoke only on her birthday. So every year on her birthday she would get a pack of cigarettes and smoke. After a few years of that she stopped doing it, and didn't mind not...
  7. Hi Alice, i don't know if you have read up on the withdrawal symptoms some people get from stopping gluten? This link goes over it some, but there are more articles on the web you can search on also. It seems gluten has protein sequences that are similar enough to some opioids that they can bind with receptors in the brain. So some people can actually...
  8. Sorry, BRM is short for Bob's Red Mill. They make a lot of gluten-free products. Your symptoms could be an actual intolerance, or the back and forth of healing. There don't have to be specific symptoms for an intolerance. People can have a lot of varying symptoms. That's what makes it kind of tricky. You need to eliminate the possible food item...
  9. Hi Alice, There are quite a few threads on what do after being glutened around the board, As you guessed it is not a super unusual thing to happen, although generally it is an accidental thing but not always. Try searching on charcoal or pepto-bismol and you should get some hits. I hope you feel better soon.
  10. Real good advice you got. One other thing I suggest is to cut out the nutrition labels off those processed foods items you are eating. Paste or tape them in a food journal and add the date and your symptoms. You might want to look back at that in a few months and check for other common ingredients to eliminate. You can find many lists of the top 8 food...
  11. Hmm, depends on what you mean by fight-off Barry. Actually that is a good description of what happens, the antibodies to gluten attack it along with your intestines. If you mean it is being ignored the answer is. (drum roll here), no. You had some symptoms and that means something is going on right? Your gut may not be as inflamed and irritated right...
  12. Glad you posted about them leetle icons Squirmy, cause I never noticed them until now. but I definitely see 'em hiding right under your name / pic / avatar dealie now. Maybe I'll try yours out! Whoo-hoo!
  13. I scrubbed out my cast iron pan with steel wool, and then boiled soapy water in it for a while. It was fine. Same with my stainless steel pots and pans. Got a new colander though because I couldn't see how to clean inside all those little holes completely. Wood is a very porus material so I think it is possible it could hold gluten particles for a while...
  14. Welcome aboard Shari! Our ship is setting sail for a bright and beautiful gluten free future. We all have to get out and row sometimes but we are making a little progress every day. Fortunately we have a bunch of navigators who have been there before us and can keep us pointed in the right general direction. Once we get past the rocky shoals of adjustment...
  15. Hi Dani, About 10% or more of celiacs react to oats as well as wheat, rye and barley proteins. You won't know if you are one of those 10% or so unless you eliminate them for a while and then challenge them. Eliminating oats means eliminating BRM products a they produce oat products in the same area as their gluten-free grains. Sorry about the peanuts...
  16. Do keep in mind that the vaccine is not for all celiacs, but a subset. I think he said those with DQ-2 are targeted, but not DQ-8. I hope I got that right and not backwards. So, it will not work for all people, if it does work that is. The testing isn't complete, so we don't yet know if it works.
  17. Sorry, I haven't heard of this test Teknolen. Do you have the name of the test or the lab that performs it?
  18. Just seemed appropriate here. 19. Oranges, grapefruit, and peanuts. Actually I am experimenting wit some candy right now to see how it goes. I used to make peanut brittle sometimes. Pretty easy to do. Are you sure oats are ok for you? Have you tried eliminating them for 30 days?
  20. Hi Chuck, Here is an article on Nature.com from The American Journal of Gastroenterology that discusses the Marsh score for damage to the villi in celiac disease. Open Original Shared Link This article discusses the antibodies and testing: Interpretation of Celiac Disease Blood Test Results celiac com
  21. @Alice Thanks for posting the link Alice, very interesting talk by Dr. Anderson. It's neat that people are working on treatments for celiac disease. Really interesting too that there is an idea it might help lead to treatments for other auto-immune diseases. That would be a real big upside for so many people. @Strawberry I do know that for hay fever...
  22. People just say stupid things. It's what they do. Listen to politicians if you don't believe me. You can always say something stupid right back at them. Or be polite and start a conversation about the food and help them understand a little better. I wonder if you are eating a lot of processed gluten-free foods though? If so you might have a small...
  23. HI Chuck, The cats do like to share their saliva a bit don't they? Muffin the cat-head here eats BG (Before Grain) brand cat food now. Their are other grain free cat foods available, too, I think one is Blue Thunder or some such thing. If Peoptr the pro pet food advisers stops in he would have a good suggestion. @Chuck, DH in this...
  24. Hi 49er, My younger brother had both celiac and Crohn's. It is not unheard of to have both. I wish you the best in your journey. I wish I understood more about celiac back then so I could have helped him. He didn't really follow the gluten-free diet. But we know a lot more about how to eat healthy these days. On some Crohn's forums they are people...
