ARCHIVED Gluten Free Casein Free Candy
GFinDC replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, I only went thru 3 bags in 5 days. I already had the Big D from being sick so not sure if it made any difference or added to it. Guess I'll have to get some more and find out! I saw a link on the Ricola USA site where they said they test to 2 PPM or less of gluten. I am not so sure their web site math works tho. .002% sounds more like 2 thousandths... -
ARCHIVED Any Ideas For "disguising" The Texture Of Meat?
GFinDC replied to Kelleybean's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ok, this isn't exactly the recipe. Someone else had posted about sweet potato meatloaf a couple times recently but I don't remember what thread or who. Anyhow, this recipe calls for bread, but you just leave that out. Changes I made were: I used hamburger not turkey. No bread. No barbecue sauce. I cooked the sweet potato in the microwave for 1... -

Nope, the actual barph tree is a ginko tree. We have them on some city streets in DC and in the late summer they drop these little, baby ginko seeds/fruits. They drop a lot of them. Tons and tons all over the sidewalks. And they rot and smell exactly like barph! Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Unfortunately they are very tall... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Casein Free Candy
GFinDC replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had a pretty strong head cold this week and have been sucking on Ricola cough drops in various flavors. They are pretty much like a hard candy. Not expensive either. -
ARCHIVED Could I Have Celiac Disease? Even With Bleeding?
GFinDC replied to Jennifer444's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can't heal your intestine overnight by not eating gluten. It takes time. You also may think you are gluten free but not really be gluten free. Gluten is in many different foods where you would not expect it. I had bleeding also but it did stop after I had been gluten-free for awhile. I am not talking days but months. That doesn't mean it will take... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac-Please Help!
GFinDC replied to jenn-ag's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To test for celiac they usually take several biopsies of the small intestine and then send them to a lab for analysis. Before that (endoscopy) though the standard test would be blood tests for antibodies to gliaden, the protein in wheat. Neither the antibodies or the endoscopy can give 100% accurate always truly correct results though. So it's good to... -

I sometimes mix canned salmon into guacamole I make. I pick out the bones and skin usually and just stir it in. If he likes chips he might like that as a dip. Or as an alternative to mayo on a sandwich or wrap. You could also try a sweet potato meatloaf for him. -
Eww, I thot for a minute you said the dunking in the toilet bowl! And the other cats wouldn't like to drink with floaters! Eww! Silly cat. Mine likes to get in the tub and bat a wad of paper around. The tub faucet barely drips and I leave it that way because she can't resist drinking from the drip. Cam Dats they is!

ARCHIVED I Glutened Her Again.
GFinDC replied to Juliebove's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I glutened myself with some peanut butter cookies I made at home last week. I used a new brand of peanut butter (Crazy Richard) that I hadn't had before. I doesn't list any gluten ingredients but it sure got me good. A while back I bought some tuna packed in water. Got it home and ate some and got sick. Read the ingredients and it had soy in it.... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed Celiac For Almost A Year. Now Is This Ibs? Parasite? Complete Gi Failure?
GFinDC replied to CantWeight's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You can develop an intolerance to any food, doesn't matter what it is called. I can't do carrots or turnips myself. Which I find a bit odd cause I don't see many people having those a problems. Ah well, that's how the cookie crumbles. If you suspect the protein drink, take it out. It's that simple. But make a list of all the ingredients too... -
ARCHIVED Well, Guys, It Looks Like I'm Here For The Long Haul :)
GFinDC replied to Chiana's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Happy campers are what we strive for! I had lactose intolerance for years and thot that was the cause of my problems. I even reacted to bread with little amount of dairy they put in it. So I took lactaid pills when I ate bread. Duh! It never really worked. I still can't eat dairy but I feel oodles better off gluten. -
ARCHIVED Celiac and Crohn's Disease May Share Genetic Risk Factors - BusinessWeek
GFinDC replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think this is important information for celiacs to read. My younger brother had both celiac and crohns. One article said 18.5% of celiacs have or get crohns also. That's a pretty large number really, almost 20%. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Negative But Off 2/3 Weeks Prior
GFinDC replied to wow89's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From what I've read here. most GI's tell their patients with celiac to stop eating gluten. That's about it. They don't offer much in the way of guidance or support. When I went to the celiac center at U of MD in Balitmore they had me meet with a dietician. I'd already been gluten free for 3 months and had found this site so there wasn't much she could... -
I've seen cats and dogs eat grass of their own volition. So they are willing to eat some green vegetable matter. Heck, I had a cat that ate an olive one time. I think grain free foods are a step in the right direction though and am looking for ones that Muffin the meow-head will eat. Thanks to all for the food suggestions in this thread!

Welcome to our group Chiana! If you aren't having symptoms from the dairy then it is not likely a problem for you to eat it. For some people it is hard to digest lactose i dairy at first but after a while (healing) they can digest it. Hard cheeses are mostly casein as the lactose is digested by the bacteria. If you stop all dairy for a couple weeks and... -
ARCHIVED Should I Keep Eating Gluten Until I See A Gastroenterologist?
GFinDC replied to zebaldwin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, it is still possible to have celiac with negative tests. If you want to be tested you need to stay on your regular gluteney diet until the testing is done. Otherwise the antibodies will start declining and the testing won't work. There is around a 20% false negative test rate, so it is still good to do the gluten-free diet even if the tests are negative... -

I gots it too. I am carrying a roll of TP around the house to blow my nose. It's running like a faucet. Everywhere I go there are mountains of snot rags piled up, harboring lots of germmies. Getting over the fever today though so things are looking up. Also sucking down Ricola cough drops every few minutes for sore throat. Who says pirates can't plan... -

Healing time does vary by the person. How well you manage your gluten-free diet has a huge impact on the healing time. I suggest removing all dairy for a few weeks and see if it makes any difference. If you don't find any difference then it is probably not an issue for you. -

ARCHIVED Newbie In Need Of Advice
GFinDC replied to wildcatboy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Milk is a problem for lots of celiacs at the beginning of the gluten-free diet. You may be able to eat it successfully after you have healed for a few months. Ups and downs and GI issues are not rare at the start either. There are lots of ways to slip up and eat gluten or get a little cc (cross-contamination) by accident. Eating mostly whole foods instead...
