ARCHIVED 10 Months Post Diagnosis, Struggling With New Symptoms
GFinDC replied to rain's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hemp milk is another option, one brand is called Tempt. There are gluten free rice milks also, just the Dream ones are bad as far as I know. -
What Takala said times two. Ditch the obvious problem foods that bother lots of people like us. Dairy, soy, oats, chocolate (unless its soy-free) and the nighshades. If that doesn't work look at all the other likely culprits like corn, and the top 8 food allergens. Remember too that reactions can be delayed a couple of days and can continue for days...

ARCHIVED Is MSG Safe?
GFinDC replied to blissfully-unaware's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One thing I started doing a while back is to add spices to the serving I am eating, rather than a whole pot of food as I am cooking it. That way if I did react to the spice it would only be that serving that was bad, and I wouldn't have to throw out a lot of food. -
Hi Jen, Yes, that makes sense. From what I read, hypoglycemia is often caused by diabetes medications. There are several members here with diabetes who can probably give you better advice then I can. Do you eat some protein when you get symptoms too? Just seems like that would help, but I am no expert.

You can concentrate on meat and veggies instead of carbs and have a good gluten-free diet. Meat proteins are slow to digest and provide long lasting energy for your body vs carbs. Think of the Mediterannean diet or the paleo diet as guides. A lot of people with celiac follow the SCD (specific carbohydrate) diet or a version of it. But basically keep...

ARCHIVED I Thought I Had It Figured Out....maybe Not
GFinDC replied to jessicalw28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Effexor sure sounds like a possibility. People can develop reactions to just about anything. It could be a reaction to some ingredient in the Effexor pills also. Drug makers use fillers to "bulk" out the pills, but the active ingredients are usually a small percentage of the pill weight. So most of what you are taking in pill form is not a drug but some... -
ARCHIVED Food Intolerances - Sometimes Makes No Sense!
GFinDC replied to catarific's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What you are describing is part of a typical food intolerance reaction for me. C first and then D as the body rids itself of the offending "food". I figure the C part is basically a temporary freeze-up of the intestines as they are freaking out over the nasty stuff they are loaded with. Just my opinion, but when they get past the shock they purge the crap... -

Open Original Shared Link Just for the heck of it, you might want o read about other people's reactions to Effexor on the Ask A Patient site. I didn't see anything about hives but there many pages of comments and 2 listings. And here is a picture of hives at the Mayo Clinic site: Beware nekked skin with hives! ARCHIVED Mythbusters Gluten Submission Campaign
GFinDC replied to domesticactivist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree, explosions are something MB always find a way to fit in. Big kids get big explosions! They could blowup a truckload of wheat and test the remains for gluten. I wouldn't cry over some destroyed wheat. -

Well, paprika is a nightshade also. Check out this WF link for brief (not) list of nightshades. So you are reacting to 2 different nightshades already, peppers and paprika (based on your sig). Open Original Shared Link Have you tried Food Should Taste Good chips? They make gluten-free chips also. They have sweet potato chips, olive chips etc... -
ARCHIVED Whats Your 'go-To' Meal
GFinDC replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, Hellman's canola oil cholesterol free mayo. It's the only main stream brand I know of that is soy free. And nope, I never have made mayo. I don't think homemade mayo is real complicated, but they say it only last a couple days too. Plus the possibility of salmonella is enough to keep me buying it anyway. -
ARCHIVED When Should You Stop Dairy, Corn, Coffee, Soy,... ?
GFinDC replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suggest going off soy and dairy for 6 months now. You can always add them back in one at a time as a test to see how you handles them. But taking a break from them for some months is a good thing. -

I saw you can't eat peppers. You might want to take a pass on the potatoes for a while too, and see if you do better. Potatoes, peppers and tomatoes are all nightshades that bother me and others. Sweet potatoes are different and are ok. Also, have you tried any pro-biotics? They might help some. -
ARCHIVED New W/fibromyalgia, Wheat, Dairy And Of Course Celiac
GFinDC replied to Noche22's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It is good to start with a whole foods diet. Learning to cook is pretty important if you are going to be gluten-free. Making you own food will help you identify ingredients that cause problems too. Basically avoid anything in boxes for awhile, or pre-made meals. Once you have the hang of eating gluten-free and cooking your own food, you can experiment... -
ARCHIVED Is It Hard For You To Believe When People React To Different Gluten Levels Than You?
GFinDC replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have no problem believing there is a wide range of reactions to gluten. after all, silent celiac is just that, and those people walk around eating gluten without any idea they are celiac until they are diagnosed (if). I also think there are some people with unknown other food intolerances have digestive systems that are already in a state of irritation... -
ARCHIVED I've Been Gluten-Free For A Year, But Still Have Many "issues"
GFinDC replied to Cinnamongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's not unusual for celiacs on this board ot have additional food intolerances beyond gluten. So that is something to consider as a possible cause of your ongoing symptoms. Soy, eggs, dairy, fish, corn, nightshades etc can all cause symptoms. Vitamins are great but if you are reacting to another food you won't feel right until you get it out of your diet... -
ARCHIVED Whats Your 'go-To' Meal
GFinDC replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I forgot sweet potatoes in the nuker for 10 minutes. Split them in half after cooking and drizzle on a little olive oil then sugar and cinnamon. Or wraps made with brown rice tortillas and some kind of pre-cooked meat, chicken, turkey or hamburger usually. Run water over both sides of the brown rice wraps before microwaving so they are soft enough to fold... -

I fry some chunks of ham with some onions and garlic powder and sliced olives. Then add a can of black beans or other beans and salt and pepper. Pretty quick and easy too. -

It might help to keep her food separate from the older cats at first too. Less competition that way.
