ARCHIVED Should I Take My Son Off Gluten?
GFinDC replied to ljgs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, try the gluten-free diet. But you might want to have him tested for antibodies first. And then try the gluten-free diet (regardless of test results) for a couple months and see how he does. -
ARCHIVED Mythbusters Gluten Submission Campaign
GFinDC replied to domesticactivist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, here's my MB show suggestion. A little sexiness should help get people interested in the topic. **************************************************** Ok, here is one I'd like to see MB test. Can a person be exposed to enough gluten to get sick from kissing a gluten eater who hasn't brushed their teeth? Say your significant other just drank a... -

ARCHIVED Anyone With Similar Experience?
GFinDC replied to alevoy18's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have a thyroid cyst and a couple nodules that my endo monitors. I have had them for 3 years now and they aren't any big problem so far. I think they say its something like 90% or more of thyroid nodules are benign. I have gotten better at memory since going gluten free. I don't feel like I am back to 100% but much better than before gluten-free. ... -
Maybe you can switch to decaf in the afternoons. And later decaf in the mornings.

ARCHIVED Splenda - Are You Using This Product?
GFinDC replied to catarific's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I actually tried some Splenda over New Years while visiting relates. It went down ok for me. I'll try it a little more now and see how it goes. But generally I use sugar or agave syrup or some such thing if I want something sweet. Generally I avoid honey due to possible allergy reactions. I did get some Truvia (Stevia product) to try too. Will be trying... -

11:18 PM here. Paucity indeed ! -
My understanding is that gluten in the general sense for all grains, consists of a protein and a starch molecule bonded together. That's all it means. When we talk about gluten and celiac disease here, everyone assumes that we mean the gluten in wheat, rye and barley cereal grasses. But that doesn't mean there are not other plants with some kind of protein...

The tamari is kind of expensive from w2hat I recall. You could get some other soy containing food to try, like Chex Chocolate cereal ( pretty sure it has soy), or some soy nuts, or some frozen edamme. I saw a study not long ago where they said infants who are casein intolerant and are switch to soy milk are then more likely to develop additional food...

Garlic is supposed to be a good anti-bacterial too. I have been wondering what the GSE was for. Thanks for that.

You can try some peppermint tea or peppermint Altoids to relieve gas in the stomach. It helps you belch. You can also try some Pepto Bismol to coat your intestine and possibly relieve some of the irritation if it is gluten. You may also have a stomach ulcer. IF it doesn't clear up in a week after getting your diet right you could ask your doc to check...

ARCHIVED Can Symptoms Get Dangerously Worse?
GFinDC replied to Holly4's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Regardless of what you decide about proceeding with the testing, there is no reason you can't start upping your vitamins now. You could start taking sub-lingual B-12 and a B-complex now and it might help with the nerve issues. -

ARCHIVED All The Celiac People On This Website Had Bad Gi Symptoms
GFinDC replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ok, a couple things you may not know about. Celiac causes a wide wide range of symptoms in people. If you spend some time reading this board you will see there are people with joint pain, muscle pain, nerve problems, sleep problems, mental symptoms, skin problems, hair loss, GI problems, thyroid issues etc etc etc, not really sure where it stops. And then... -
ARCHIVED New, In Pain, Alone, And Really Depressed
GFinDC replied to KaelinG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are actually a lot of different nightshades, but the foods that people seem to react to mostly are tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. Sweet potatoes are ok though. -
ARCHIVED Can A Colonoscopy Diagnose Celiac?
GFinDC replied to glut'nfree's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, If they took biopsy samples from the small intestine then they must have done an endoscopy. An endoscopy is done by going through the mouth, vs a colonoscopy going through the nether end. It is good to do both at the same time, and it sounds like the GI did that. The tests for celiac are not perfectly 100% accurate, so even if he got a negative... -
I don't think you will find any soy in these either. As Peter said, it would have to be declared in the USA or Canada at least. Natural Flavor, Artificial Flavor, Flavor Mono and Diglycerides Vitamin E, Tocopherals Lecithin is usually soy derived, or maybe always, I am not sure about that. You can find soy in many vitamin pills or vegetable cooking...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Crackers...i Found A Great Substitute!
GFinDC replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No biggie! Yep, they are gluten-free. The sweet potato and olive chips don't have soy. Looks like it is the multigrain ones that have soy flour. I didn't check all the other flavors for soy. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed, Can't Really Afford The Over Priced Foods.
GFinDC replied to tessabear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Tessa, If you are sharing the kitchen with gluten eaters, you will need to train them on how to prevent cc (cross contamination). Shared toasters are a bad thing, as the gluten crumbs get stuck in them and ain't easy to get rid of. Shared condiments such as peanut putter or butter, mayo jars etc are bad also. Having separate containers marked as... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Crackers...i Found A Great Substitute!
GFinDC replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
They sell them at some Giant grocery stores. I like the olive chips and sweet potato chips myself. I didn't think the multi-grain version were gluten-free, but maybe it was soy that stopped me from buying them, can't remember now. -
ARCHIVED Autoimmune Tests?
GFinDC replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey, I am no expert either CassP. I totally agree with your thinking that the ANA is not a good indicator of Sjogren's or lupus or any specific condition. Seems it is just a general indicator of some "possible " autoimmune condition. Although they also say some people have elevated ANA but no autoimmune condition. Hmmm, so again a not exactly perfect... -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker Mixes, Bisquick And Udi's
GFinDC replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
well, if it is xanthan gum you can test that theory. Get some xantham gum and use it in a recipe. Then do the same recipe without the xanthan gum. It doesn't have to be something baked. You could put some xanthan gum in a soup for instance and check your reactions. Xanthan gum is kind of expensive so maybe you could borrow a few tablespoons from a nearby...
