  1. I am so sorry you are having such a rotten time. It must be hard to be a mom when you are feeling so bad. Some random thoughts: being gluten "lite" for almost a year prior to the testing could definitely have an effect on your results. It is recommended you eat the equivalent of 4-6 slices of bread a day for at least six weeks prior to testing to maintain...
  2. Nora, who is from Norway, is our most knowledgeable person on the European-recognized genes associated with celiac. I, myself, unfortunately am a genetic ignoramus. It would be good if Nora popped in.
  3. Hi Julie, and welcome. Yes, it happens often. There is celiac disease, and then there is gluten intolerance. Those who are classified as gluten intolerant test negative on the celiac blood test and biopsy, but react to gluten the same way celiacs do in most respects. It is frustrating for them because they have all the symptoms but can't get the diagnosis...
  4. Have you ever had a biopsy done of the area immediately adjacent to the rash while the rash is in its active phase? That is the way to diagnose dermatitis herpetiformis, and could determine once and for all with medical evidence whether you are celiac or gluten intolerant. If that is important to you... either way, it seems obvious you should avoid gluten...
  5. In Europe there are other genes associated with celiac, in addition to the two that are recognized in the U.S. Has the doctor given you the celiac blood panel test or endoscopy with biopsy? These are generally the first line testing for celiac and it sounds to be how your mother was diagnosed. I would request the blood test if I were in your shoes.
  6. It's hard when families can't get on board. I am from a farm family too, meat, bread, potatoes, puddings, baked goods everywhere morning, noon and night. No wonder I was always in the vegetable garden eating the fresh peas and carrots, and climbing the apple trees. Breakfast used to be a disaster of rolled oats or Wheetbix, fried leftover potatoes, or...

    ARCHIVED I Stink

Why don't you try switching to almond or hemp milk, or even soy if that doesn't bother you? See if that makes a difference. I stayed off all dairy milk for a good year before I started using the Lactaid milk, and then only in cooking..
  8. ...and...let me guess, Ivyblaze, not one single person in your family has ever been tested for celiac disease? Am I right?? If not, or even if they have, I think it is time you went to your primary care physician and demanded to be tested on the following basis: alternating diarrhea and constipation cramping stomach pain and gas foul smelling stool...
  9. It is my understanding that there is no known connection between osteo-(degenerative) arthritis and celiac. There is a definite correlation between rheumatoid arthritis and celiac. RA is an autoimmune disease like celiac. Osteoarthritis is the "wear and tear" arthritis. Now both can cause pain and even swelling in the joints. But with the RA any associated...
  10. Depends if you have any other intolerances. I bought a bunch of gluten free cookbooks and really liked Bette Hagman's The Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread, and then found out I was intolerant of potato starch!! So it was back to substituting again. I don't do soy either and don't like the taste of the bean flours. Purple eventually helped me settle on...
  11. I have had severe lactose intolerance since 1992. (Didn't know it was a symptom of celiac because I didn't know about celiac ) I have been gluten free two years now, and have noticed an increasing tolerance, like I could have a capucchino, and eventually some whipped cream as long as I took Lactaid. Christmas day I used the Lactaid with my cream, last...
  12. Yup, you got that right Peter. Either 12 or 11 hours ahead (can't remember which daylight savings does to us ) Just making the Gluten Free Goddess chocolate cake for dessert, having gone to the berry farm and purchased fresh raspberries. There is cognac cream in the fridge We shall be having scallops (scollops) and shrimp(s) as they say here, for...
  13. Thanks for your responses. I think the part that really got to me is that our hostess has these grandchildren that she constantly tells us about preparing special food for, she knows how difficult it is for them not to eat the regular stuff, she has all the gluten free flours on hand, and I thought if she had any concerns about any additional needs we had...
  14. One of my neighbors hosted a neighbourhood get together for drinks and snacks on Monday evening for Christmas. This is a group pf people who get together once a month for elevenses at alternating hosts' homes. They are all well aware of our gluten free status and needs. Our hostess has grandchildren who have multiple food intolerances for whom she cooks...
  15. As one who has to go to great lengths to avoid soy flour, I seem to find it in just about everything! Supposedly, in gluten free baking it improves texture and gives a better crust. But since I don't use it, I don't know.
  16. Richard, I wondered the same thing. Those are two of the places my psoriasis pops up. Woolygimp, can you describe this rash to us? Does it have any scales or flakes? What color is is when it fades?
  17. My results from Diagnos-Techs were pretty reliable. Your lactose intolerance may only be temporary until your villi heal and start producing the enzyme lactase to digest the lactose. My results from Diagnos-Techs said casein, but it was actually only the lactose I was having problems with, and 18 months later I am tolerating some lactose products in small...
  18. Scary stuff, luvdogz, these idiosyncratic reactions to things. Thank goodness for good ole mom! Have a great Christmas and holiday and we will hear from you in the New Year.
  19. Peggy, I did not know that our glucose syrup from wheat was considered to be safe for celiacs. I can testify that it is not after eating some Pascall mints and I don't consider myself particularly sensitive. There is very little candy that I can eat because it is all wheat-based sweeteners. It is such a pain. Oh well, saves me some added pounds....
  20. Hi,and welcome to the forum. I am not going to give you any supportive "mizry", but I am going to tell you that you can *do* this. A diet without dairy is not an unhealthy diet. Many folks believe we should not eat dairy anyway. Whilst I do, you will find many people on this forum who are both gluten and dairy free. While it seems daunting at the start...
  21. Purple, I made these yesterday with your flour blend, and they are fantastic!! Luv them! dh likes how chocolatey they are and soft, and they didn't fall--just crackled a bit. Mmmm.
  22. The test that should be run in conjunction with the other tests is total serum IGA. If this is deficient it will throw the other results off. Also, the results are not valid because you had not been consuming enough gluten at the time. With your family history I think having the genetic testing for both you and your daughter is a good idea. Is your...
  23. The right coast has always been the wrong coast
  24. Hi, and welcome to the forum. Yes, your history and symptoms sound like many of us on here; if you read around you will probably find your story many times over. The doctors all think of everything to test for but celiac disease. To rule that out (or in) what you need is a blood test consisting of the following: Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA Anti-Gliadin...
  25. I would take them with every meal
