  1. I have never had scoliosis before, but have developed it in later years in my thoracic spine. I don't know if it had anything to do with the surgical removal of my first rib??? or how to explain its presence. No osteoporosis, no change in posture. It's a puzzlement. I'm working with a physio at the moment; do you think a chiropractor would be better?...
  2. I have a pretty immediate reaction (within an hour or two) to lactose and corn. But with gluten it can be as much as 24 hours; I will generally know by then.I believe everyone is different in this respect.
  3. Many people base their employment decisions on the availability of health insurance. I.e., if you can get a job with a good company that has good health insurance options, grab it. I have worked many jobs in the U.S. where there were no health benefits (smaller companies, law firms, etc.--the law firms insured the lawyers but none of the support staff)...
  4. While I am no baker supreme, I am getting the hang of gluten free flours (finally)! Glluten free flours seldom work well on their own. Generally, you use at least one starch (potato, corn, tapioca--sometimes all three), an all purpose flour like brown or white rice flour, and since all those have very little nutrition, something like sorghum, buckwheat...
  5. Hi and welcome to the forum. Your post is a little puzzling to me. I have never heard of Type 2 celiac; did he explain what that was??? If he was not suspicious of celiac disease, did he do any biopsies for celiac when he did the endoscopy? Normally, a minimum of 4-6 biopsies should be done because the damage from celiac in the small intestine can...
  6. You probably know that in order for the blood test (or endoscopy for that matter) to have any chance of validity you need to have been eating gluten (say 3 slices of bread a day or equivalent) for at least two months, some say three. Otherwise your body will not have made enough antibodies to show up on the tests or the damage to the small intestine may...
  7. I would suggest making a soup with barley in it. You can buy bags of soup mixes, split peas, lentils, barley, etc. Barley would be the only gluten. Good luck.
  8. I would like to hear what your "common" symptoms are, just as a matter of interest. Also if the weight loss was good news or bad news, i.e., were you overweight before and trying to lose weight? Celiac produces two diammetrically opposed responses depending on your body's reaction. Some people lose weight drastically while eating gluten and cannot gain...
  9. The first time I ate ham that I found had gluten in it, I was like, "oh crap..are you serious?" Same for the marmalade!!
  10. If this is so, Richard, why do all the recipes from the U.S. specify gluten free ham, gluten free salad dressing, gluten free ketchup? Why does everyone say to only use McCormicks seasonings because they are the only ones that are safe. Why do people take their own salad dressings to restaurants? It must be because these products often have gluten in them...
  11. Be particularly wary of ketchup, all sauces, salad dressings, seasonings, especially blends. I have even found gluten in marmalade and preserves, ham and lunch meats, here in NZ even bacon, sausages of course (though soy has become more of a problem in these ). That's my particular gluten lists (although I have others for soy and corn and lactose and....
  12. If she thinks gluten free diets are too restrictive, she should try having to live your whole life within two minutes of a toilet and see how restrictive that is Seriously, if eating gluten free relieves your symptoms, why on earth would you continue eating it? To make other people feel better? Because you don't have the willpower to do it? Because...
  13. For me it is a variety of symptoms. Caffeine--extreme tachycardia and insomnia. Lactose--gastro Corn--gastro Soy--extreme itching with red rash Potatoes--hives and extreme itching Green peppers--gastro Remaining nightshades--avoid on principle and because of RA Citric acid--blotchy red itching areas
  14. Unfortunately, one of the biggest expenses in the US health care system are the obscene profits made by undetected fraud, especially in Medicare and Medicaid. Fraud exists everywhere, but it seems especially prevalent in the government health care programs (and, might I add, in the financial sector. too--which has impacted the whole world ) with the watchdogs...
  15. OMG, another tragic tale to tell. Soozle, you must be feeling awful, but IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!!! Dogs will always find ways to poison theirselves with all kinds of terrible sh***, but that DOES NOT make you an unfit parent for poor Weezel. But the Fluffy Assassin is right, we have to do what we have to do to save our beloveds or else we can't live wiv...
  16. Oh, my goodness, Lisa, what a horribly bad series of circumstances, and what a survivor you are, what survivors you all are. I have been trying to read between the lines but there weren't too many to read between. I knew, of course, that Brian had lost his leg, but did not know the tragic circumstances in which it happened. How traumatic for your whole...
  17. Hi, and welcome to the forum. The short answer is "No". A gluten-free diet never hurt anyone. Many people who test negative, inconclusive, borderline, etc., for celiac are in fact gluten intolerant/sensitive. It is possible to have non-celiac gluten intolerance. There is some discussion as to whether these people are just not sick enough to show...
  18. Oh Psills, I is so behind Will do me best. Leesagh! Nathan??? son?? Chemo?? Been very sick??? Did NOT know (goes way back?) On the home stretch??? YAY!!!! Brian!! Got a Job!!! YAY!!!! What a fabulous week for your family. You truly have something to celebrate tonight. Champers and Thunder Down Under...
  19. Let me speak as one who partakes of both the U.S. and the New Zealand health care systems. First off, I don't see anything too drastic happening to the American health care industry. The people would simply not permit it. Things are pretty entrenched the way they are, which is why Hillary Clinton's health reforms got nowhere--much too radical. The health...
  20. My CRP has been outrageously high for several years, as high as 88 at one point. After going gluten free I managed to get it down to 21, but it was not until I started the Humira injections for my psoriatic arthritis that I got it down to less than five. That was just under a year ago, and it has stayed there, thank goodness.
  21. Overall, statistics show women as more likely to get osteoporosis than men; however, I think all bets are off when we are dealing with celiac. My husband and I both started with really good bone density; mine have stayed good but my husband quickly dropped to osteopenia,, and he didn't even realize he had celiac--just went on the diet so it would be easier...
  22. You can't expect immediate results with the bloating. You still have a damaged gut that is going to take a while to heal, and until you heal you are not going to be digesting food properly. As mentioned, probiotics can help, and so can digestive enzymes to help out your pancreas which many times has thrown its hands up in the air and said "I give up". ...
  23. I agree with Tiffany. If you can somehow explain to them that every time you put something in your mouth that might have been in contact with gluten (and yes, they will express surprise at this, but be firm about it) you are risking getting sick, then they might begin to understand. Ask them if they would put something in their mouths, knowing there was...
  24. Unfortunately, you often don't know until you break something If you are low in the nutrients we have been discussing there is a good chance that your bones are not in very good shape. The only way to know for sure is to get a DEXA bone scan which is a relatively simple, and painless procedure (although may cost quite a bit). If you have been diagnosed...
  25. Yes, it is a good idea to have all nutrient levels checked as a baseline, to see how much supplementation is needed; check all those mentioned above, plus B12 and folate, because you are likely deficient in several of them due to malabsorption. In addition to Vit. D, and B12 shots, a take a mega B complex and a high dose multimineral tablet that also contains...
