Tasted O'Brien's (Australian) pale ale and premium lager at the gluten free expo this afternoon, and Man!! were they good. We came home with a 6-pack of pale ale since that's what Dh and I both like. First time I've had a beer in a while! Very expensive so it won't be an every day thing, but good for a treat.

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
mushroom replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am sorry I failed to respond to you before, Angie. Completely missed your post. I am glad you decided to go gluten free anyway; how's it going? My own health these days, gluten-wise, is pretty good. I used to mainly have terrible gas, bloating, diarrhea, and of course the psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis that came on about five years ago. ... -
ARCHIVED Lindt Chocolate's Definitive Response Of 2007
mushroom replied to Leonesse's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Update: Went to a gluten free expo today; Lindt chocolate was on display and it was confirmed to me (from an official list put out by Lindt) that the 70% dark chocolate we get in New Zealand and OZ is both gluten and soy free (although "may" contain traces of soy, but good enough for me--if it were gluten it would be different since soy just makes me itch... -

Another reason to get out of a taxi (or a hitchhiking ride with a driver that doesn't speak English): When you realize he is taking you in exactly the opposite direction from where you asked to go! (And no, it isn't a short cut ) I have done this at a traffic light, (at a busy intersection!!) -- once for each! Jess, I am so sorry that you find... -
ARCHIVED Hi, I'm New
mushroom replied to leenabeana's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Leenabeana, and welcome to the forum. The blood tests are not foolproof and give a fairly high false negative rate. You could always ask for an endoscopy with biopsy of the small intestine, which is considered to be the so-called "gold standard" of diagnosis, but he may not want to do this if the bloodwork is negative. But you can certainly try... -
I'm listening and I hear you. I think this is probably a pretty common feeling. How do we know when we are as good as we are ever going to get? If you have been feeling bad for so long, is it possible to recognize wellness, to know what it feels like? And with celiac we have so many symptoms and so many deficiencies and so many related problems to work...

ARCHIVED Confusion Now Over.
mushroom replied to Bethe444's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, it really does give you a burst/boost. I had three of them and that's all it took to get me to overflowing. Now I am only to have them every three months. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Flour Made From Wheat Starch?
mushroom replied to B'sgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Another flour that provides a good flavor for breads (at least I love it) is buckwheat. -
ARCHIVED Confusion Now Over.
mushroom replied to Bethe444's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That nurse!!! Of course test results are negative if the tests are never done in the first place. I'm glad the gluten free diet is having such a positive response for you. Hope your B12 goes up too--your are taking it, right?? You will feel so much better I am sure. -

I can relate to your post. I have bugged off a lot of things I used to be involved in for the last year because I did not have the energy/interest/motivation for these duties. I was too busy trying to get well. Now that I am venturing back into some of these activities everyone is telling me how well I am looking now, so I must have been looking like hell... -

Okay, I fess up, I is the anonnymouse user drifting around here. Had a long day and doing some quiet reading late at night. So tired, no psilly in me at all, spent de whole day in town, but got me a nifty carry-on bag at one-third off (Samsonite yet), so I is happy. The handle works!!! Yeah! So glad Brian is home, Lisa, but pooh about de flu. Get... -
I can relate to gastric distress from mental stress, and your post makes perfect sense. I can remember in my teens if a prospective date was late picking me up from home I would be prowling the floor and intermittently running to the loo with the D, in the fear of being stood up! There does seem to be a direct link from the brain to the gut. Fortunately...

Oh well, that counts me out--never heard of the ??lady??? I'm sure she'd hate to hear that! -
Well, I was not a rude ex-smoker and I did leave them alone, especially since I only visit the state for three months a year, so I'm really a guest (though resident) there, but it did affect me. There were so many places I just could not go. My lungs are now very intolerant of cigarette smoke and I start choking and coughing.and spluttering immediately...

ARCHIVED Ridiculous Comments From Doctors Heard During Search For Diagnosis
mushroom replied to Sierra's Mommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"You don't want her to have Celiac" Well now, this is true. And I didn't want to have cancer or RA either. But if you have them, you have them. At that point you have no choice in the matter and you want to KNOW! What an idjit. -
I haven't had any scotch in 14 months. (switched to white rum) When I first stopped eating gluten I had enormous problems with a red rash on chest, neck and back which itched and drove me crazy. I thought maybe it was the scotch so stopped drinking it, but nothing really changed until I stopped eating soy. That got rid of the rash (and the hives I was...

I don't know about the facilitating digestion part, but I used to find that a neat scotch was the only thing that would quiet down my gassy, bloated, unhappy stomach, back in the days when I didn't know what was making it unhappy and "irritable". It just kind of killed all the symptoms, shocked them into submission, as it were

ARCHIVED Doctors Not Listening To Me...even Laughing
mushroom replied to gossamer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Meagan, I am sorry you had to suffer through such a put-down. Medical professionals only know what they know, and have no idea what they don't know. Yes, get yourself to a new doctor right away if that is how you are going to be patronized and upset. And try to find out ahead of time if they are used to diagnosing celiac disease. I certainly can't help... -
ARCHIVED Is Anybody Else Furious With Reader's Digest?!
mushroom replied to r0ckah0l1c's topic in Publications & Publicity
I guess I started disliking the word when I found that the people using the term "gay lifestyle" were usually the ones who believe that gay men have a choice as to whether or not to be gay, that it is not something innate. Now I am not trying to start a controversial discussion here as to whether or not that is true, let's not go there, but to me the word... -
I can beat you Peter (oneupmanship here); I will celebrate 40 smoke-free years next month. However I did do some passive smoking for four years when I was stuck in an office with three smokers and lousy ventilation. What a nightmare that was. I made sure my desk was next to the door....

ARCHIVED Symptoms Of Dairy Intolerance?

I don't have problems with cheese but I do have problems with lactose--milk, cream, ice cream (but not butter strangely enough, although butter has had most of the lactose removed too in the whey). I get terrible stomaches and diarrhea from lactose, almost immediately after consumption. You could be having problems with casein. Try eating a little bit... -

I criticize anyone who criticizes it as the "gluten free lifestyle" like it's something fashionable, similar to living the surfing lifestyle or the Riviera lifestyle or the country lifestyle or ...you get the picture... and not something that you have to do to maintain your health and sanity, not to mention preventing oneself from dying of or suffering from... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Restaurants In Long Beach, Ca?
mushroom replied to David's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We live wherever summer is and winter isn't. -
I think in general there are probably fewer smokers in CA than in other states, which makes it easier now because you are not surrounded by smokers. We really noticed how many there were in Nevada, but don't notice them so much now that they have limited where you can smoke.
