  1. Oh yes, it is so hard at first getting the family on board and understanding. How awful to be feeling so bad about what had happened and then be hauled over the coals for it to boot. Yeah, like you really wanted this to happen Husbands come in all different shapes, sizes, and persuasions, and we have to work on them however we think it will work best...
  2. Ye Gods, I agree totally wif Her Majesty. We leave the place for a short bit and everyone starts whinin' and snifflin' and moanin' and b%$@#in'. You guys had better straighten up and fly right, because I'm comin over dere wif me big stick and slap the sheet out of youse all if you don't. And then give everyone a little kittee to But...

Hello Jewel, and welcome. I will start you out with some answers, but not all; others will chime in. Yes, you certainly sound like a "classic" celiac to me. Of course the doctors would not agree, but on the forum yours is a common profile. Weight gain: most doctors think you have to be skinny, practically anorexic, but they're wrong. For some...
  4. "MAY CONTAIN SOY (on the box!)" That was my first question. Is that true for all lof them??
  5. Hello and welcome to the forum. Yes, although no personal experience, I have heard reports of miraculous behaviour improvement in a very short time; also of improvement in autistic children. Gluten really can have that much of an effect on some of us. As for the lactose intolerance, that is often disguised by the gluten symptoms (and caused by...
  6. Hi Jenny, and welcome. Glad to hear that gluten free eating is going well for you. Congratulations on figuring it out! Yes, many of us have a very hard time finding doctors to take us seriously and who know much about celiac (the minority, it would appear). The answer to your question depends on what's right for you. If you are happy with your self...
  7. You're lucky you're so young. By the time you face that problem you will be craving gluten free foods
  8. More than you can imagine You don't realize until you start looking for it. For example, it seems most gluten free baked goods contain soy (that's what rose up and bit me and made me so sensitive to it). You will find soy lecithin used as an emulsifier in many foods, like chocolate Now some people are able to tolerate soy lecithin; I am not one...
  9. Spinach, either raw or cooked, does not agree with me in a GI kind of way
  10. Even if it isn't a monetary issue of what insurance will or will not pay for, I would recommend the sedation. I had it done under sedation and really, you do not remember the tube being inserted or coming out. Especially if you have a strong gag reflex. The procedure itself is really quite minor, but the gag reflex makes a difference, IMHO. And if you...
  11. Jason, trying to be an objective observer here, you have started a lot of threads and a lot of forum members have shared their knowledge and expertise (I am one of them) and I am sure you have gained a lot of useful information from them, or at least you must realize this, but I would just like to make a comment here. To the best of my memory I have...
  12. I am so sorry your doctors are leaving you so up in the air with so many unanswered questions. This is totally unfair. Maybe you were too distressed to hear some of what they were saying; I will give you both the benefit of the doubt. It certainly sounds like your daughter may have celiac disease. If they ran the celiac panel of blood tests and there...
  13. You're between a rock and a hard place on diagnosis. Some of us just have to be content with self-diagnosis, knowing what we know and what the doctors don't know. Some doctors will give a diagnosis based upon positive response to the diet and to the gluten challenge (if you have a history of GI symptoms with that doctor). Your low Vitamin D is...
  14. I've never heard of it, Pete.
  15. I think the most remarkable thing for me is the disappearance of UTI's. The two years prior to going gluten free I had an almost constant UTI; I would treat with antibiotics and still not test clear, and on and on it went. I was so tired of antibiotics. I finally discovered cranberry tablets and they helped some. But now, GONE!! Haven't had a sign...
  16. David, if you believe you have a problem with soy, you should avoid anything that has that word in the label; also hydrolysed vegetable protein which is usually soy. Edamame beans are fresh soy beans, soya lecithin is also soy, but just to confuse matters some soy intolerant people can eat this; I can't. It is used as an emulsifier in most chocolate. ...
  17. JoAnn, thank you for posting those links, especially the first one, which explains in language even I can understand how Zonulin is the gatekeeper between the intestine and the blood stream, and how too much zonulin keeps the gates open and allows all the problem stuff through--the leaky gut explained in a nutshell.
  18. Oh, that would be sweet revenge, if the rest of the world had to scrounge around for something that contains gluten  because they needed their "fix"!
  19. Here I is anyway. Got nowt much to say though. Don't see many Lloyds where we will be next week, but lots of grey squirrels, Douglas squirrels, big fat ground squirrels (I guess in some places you call them prairie dogs--issay the same thing?) and plenty of mountain jays, quail, some bobtail rabbits (and CATS ). If we decide to fill the feeder on the...
  20. The first say is always the worst. It does get easier as time goes by. Just take a deep breath, relax, and figure out a plan of attack. Your instincts are right on, about shopping around the outer perimeter of the supermarket; most of the stuff there is naturally gluten free. It is best to stick there for a while, with forays in for rice and gluten free...
  21. Well, Cathy, I can't say that I don't know how it is with families. My eldest sister and I are both gluten free and self-diagnosed, but she has a diagnosed celiac daughter; our middle sister refuses to even consider that she could have a problem even though I have seen multiple times grand evidence of similar symptoms to mine; she merely says, "I just get...
  22. What??? What rock did he crawl out from under?? Does your Mom believe this?? You need tp research on here and get information on paper for her to take to him. Studies with citations that he can't refute. He needs an education.
  23. "I always cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food."
  24. Testing of children is often unreliable, and there are are many false negatives, in adults also. It is really hard to decide what to do when the testing is negative but you 99% sure gluten is the problem. You could do a short trial of, say, two weeks gluten free; that should be long enough to show some improvement if he is gluten intolerant. You could...
  25. That is fairly classic for a celiac, to have a holiday from gluten and then feel much worse when they eat it again. It is the reason many of us are self-diagnosed. It would be too dreadful for us to even consider going back on gluten for the 2-3 months necessary for the testing to be accurate.
