  1. I believe that celiac is probably an equal opportunity invader. However, there may be a difference in the personalities of those who recognize they have a problem and those that don't
  2. The five essentials for living gluten free: An adventurous spirit (for learning to cook gluten free) A thick hide (to handle all the questions and comments about living gluten free) A joyful outlook (to carry you through the bad moments--and there will be some) A palate willing to try new flavors Good eyesight and a chemistry degree (for reading...
  3. I don't know about gluten in Maybelline, but many years ago I decided to save money and switch from Revlon to Maybelline mascara; ouch!! that was a disaster. For a couple of years after that I could not wear any mascara, even the Revlon. Eventually tried Physicians Formula and that was okay. I am not even sure what I'm using now, but it could well be...
  4. I have read on here of someone who puts flax seed meal in everything; I think it was Purple. I made a non-yeast recipe for bread recently which had 1/4 cup flax in it and it was lovely. It may depend on how much you use--I don't think it is something you should use too much of
  5. Since I went gluten free I developed a severe itching rash for months which I eventually traced to soy. Of course I always knew I had a bit of a problem with soy but it became severe after eliminating gluten (because I was unwittingly eating so many soy containing foods (substituted by the food processors for the gluten)). So I religiously read labels for...
  6. Not quite. Anyways, wouldn't want to have to fight Miss Em for it; she has BIIIG claws! and she guards it jealously.. Let's just say that I could nae have done the lady justice!! Aye the sandflies is the stuff of legends here too!. We have a world-famous walk (wot, you haven't heard of the Milford Track?), three days of sandfly torture...

    ARCHIVED Newbie

Oh, I do feel the pain you are in, and the misery and guilt and all those other things. Well, the one thing your binge has done for you, besides making you feel dreadful, is tell you that you really should not eat gluten. Like me, you stopped pasta and dairy first--well, for me I just stopped lactose because I had just read one of Barbara Kingsolver...
  8. I just received a reply from my congressman too. He included the information that "While celiac disease is the most common genetic disorder in the world, more research is needed to fully understand and properly treat celiac disease."
  9. I second Turtle. I made the mistake once (when I had an unknown candida overgrowth and was trying to eat healthy) of eating rabbit food (carrots, celery, etc.) and magnified the problem 1000 times.
  10. Is skeeters the same as mossies??? What drove me out, them thangs!!! One bite on my arm and I would swell from my elbow to my fingertips!!! They kept me in my house 24/7 except when I became a mad dog and went out in the midday sun and added to my repertoire of skin cancers Down here "the bush" (forest) has another curse--sandflies!!! Little no...
  11. Have they declared a national emergency??!! T'will be a riot soon, I predicts. Trouble with putting all the power in the hands of de state (see, I learned my lessuns well in the U. S. of A.) The noive of it, in essence the gummint (or their agents) decreeing "Thou shall not drink!!) Had much the same problum in Utah though; felt like a criminal trying...
  12. Dairy products contain both lactose (sugar) and casein (protein). Some of us can handle the digestion of casein fine, but it is lactose that bothers us because the enzyme to digest lactose is produced on the tips of the villi that are damaged by gluten. Until those recover lactose is often a problem. I could eat all cultured dairy products where most...
  13. I am in total agreement with you, Miss Emily. Any statement that trivializes the response to gluten is very damaging to our cause. I believe the people most likely to cheat (my sister is one of them) are those who do not experience the full GI response and are therefore not aware of the harm they are doing themselves.
  14. Hi, and welcome to the forum. I think it is a good idea that you should be checked for celiac. In order to overcome possible doctor resistance, I would make out a list/family tree of all the members of your family who have celiac. Then make out a list in bullet form of all and any symptoms you have that are consistent with celiac disease and the the...
  15. When I first started gluten free baking I bought a couple of Bette's books and one of Carol Fenster's. I am really just now getting into breadmaking in a serious way and I don't like bean flours. What would you recommend I replace the garfava with? I have been using quite a bit of buckwheat lately. Would this work as a substitute? Or what? Thanks...
  16. Jason, I am reminded of a quote from my husband when I was complaining about something. He said "Life is hard, and then you die." Well, it's mostly true. We are all given our little burdens to carry through life and hopefully we try to carry them with the best grace we can. Unfortunately, we often don't see the burdens others are carrying, but most everybody...
  17. Welcome to the board, Jordashe. Hopefully someone here will be able to provide some insight. From reading your post I felt I needed a little more information. Were you tested with the celiac blood panel? Did you have an upper endoscopy where they took biopsies from the small intestine? What were the symptoms you had which made you seek testing in...
  18. Neroli--get your butt contiguous, lady! laugh.gif MiMommyMajesty demanded I report for duty, so here I is, ma'am, anigh, anear, fast by, vicinal, nearabouts--whoops, we won't go there--Sorry I was unavailable to assist you in your boudoir with your ablutions and toilet(te), ma'am. I is abjectly apologetic and it shall ne'er happen again, ma'am, I promise...
  19. Maybe not many members have invested in a grain mill (which tend to be kind of pricey). With the number of gluten free flours you have to combine to get a good texture, it is probably easier (I know it is for me) to buy smaller quantities of the pre-ground grains. Some I buy in larger quantities than others (I use a lot of buckwheat, for example) but since...
  20. Check out the information on page 13 of this link: Open Original Shared Link It's a good starting point. In fact you will probably find the entire link a good read.
  21. Well, it is a lot more difficult and expensive than that. You have just ordered, blind, by mail, a 90-day supply of a particular medication you take every day. You have probably had to wait 8-10 days for it to be mailed to you. You get it and you find out (if you're lucky--or unlucky depending on how you look at it) that it has gluten. So you have lost...
  22. No quantities on this one, all to your taste and needs: (not even a name!) Brown boneless chicken thighs in (butter/oil/whatever you use) Remove from pan. Saute sliced mushrooms in the same pan with some garlic, pepper and thyme until they have softened and released juices. Add some chicken stock and white wine and return chicken to pan. ...
  23. Yeah, I get the gluten free part, but are they soy free?? I believe the chocolate contains soy.
  24. I have a big time candy problem always. People here have said, I believe, that glucose syrup (from wheat) is okay?? Somehow I just can't buy something that has wheat on the label and all our candy has it in it (we not being a big corn country). Is it really okay? because if not, I am so restricted because I can't do the soy lecithin in chocolate and...
  25. Oh yeah!!! Wouldn't it be grand if it were ONLY gluten!! I think you are right.
