ARCHIVED gluten-free Restaurants In Long Beach, Ca?
mushroom replied to David's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Those things are so great--the ones you plug into the cigarette lighter?? We got one of those for our shopping trips to TJ's and WholeFoods, because it is often 100 degrees down in Carson City or Reno and a long whiles until we can get back up to the lake. -
ARCHIVED Bullied
mushroom replied to IxMissxMysticxPizza's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am so sorry you had to put up with that merciless bullying. It can rob you of your self-esteem and any feelings of worth when you are abused so constantly. But now it has stopped, and you CAN recover and it will only haunt you forever if you let it. Can you find a counselor you can talk to and get all these feelings out and get rid of them, so that you... -

ARCHIVED Leg Cramps At Night
mushroom replied to austengirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had been suffering badly from calf cramps lately and began taking a mega multi-mineral. Voila, no more leg cramps. -
Count me in on the cold group. Shivering when getting into bed in midsummer, always long sleeves all summer long, wraps for legs when watching TV, etc. I rarely put away winter clothes. Always tested normal (although low normal) on thyroid, but my results have been going up and I do feel less cold now (18 months gluten free, recent B12 injections and B...

ARCHIVED Eeg Scheduled
mushroom replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't have any medical evidence to support this post, anecdoctal only, but I come from a family of gluten intolerants. My brother was never diagnosed as such but had GI issues and developed a seizure disorder later in life (no brain injury) which sounds similar to your daughter's. It was just a temporary phasing out of what was going on, his eyes would... -
Hi Aimeez, and welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of "aimees" (the french kind) here on the forum. I like your attitude. Obviously, one of the first things you have found out is that gluten intolerance of any kind presents itself in many different ways, which makes it difficult to diagnose. And you have also learned that whether it is celiac...

ARCHIVED My 5yo - Does This Sound Like Celiacs?
mushroom replied to raquelita-83's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The answer to these questions is an unfortunate "Yes". Gluten lite does not work. And once you eliminate gluten from your diet you often react even more violently to just a teensy bit. You would need to make special arrangements to keep him gluten free at school specially for things like birthday parties, etc., when parents often send in cupcakes for sharing... -
Oh yes, those were the absolute worst! You would wake in the morning and ask, "Am I a smoker or a non-smoker?" :o Oh, the horror. You would think, oh no, I can't have blown it like that

ARCHIVED Other Intolerance After Going Gluten Free?
mushroom replied to Katea's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't recall ever noticing egg-derived lecithin, and I think I would have because lecithin always sets off alarm bells for me when I'm label-reading; it just pops right out of the label . -
ARCHIVED How Many Of You Have Lost Relatives To Colon Cancer?
mushroom replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had not heard about the melanoma link; that is interesting to me. I have two sisters and all of three us have had melanomas. We are a melanoma family, and also a breast/ovarian cancer family. My eldest sister and I are both self-diagnosed celiacs and my sister's daughter is diagnoed, and our other sister has all the symptoms but "does not believe in... -
Dairy actually involves two separate issues, the lactose (milk sugar) and the casein (milk protein). If you are celiac it is most likely that the disease has damaged the villi in your small intestine, and it is at the tip of the villi that the lactase enzyme is produced to digest the lactose. That is why so many celiacs are initially (and sometimes forever...

ARCHIVED Doctors Not Listening To Me...even Laughing
mushroom replied to gossamer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
By the way, no, a colonoscopy tells you nothing! about celiac disease. It can diagnose if you have Crohn's disease though or ulcerative colitis. The visualization of the small intestine is done through an endoscopy or gastroscopy (from the other end) and biopsies of the small intestine can, if you have serious damage, diagnose celiac. In fact some doctors... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Experience Violent Dreams?
mushroom replied to msmini14's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know if you would count this as violence per se, but I always had dreams where there was wars and battles going on and I was fleeing and hiding (but funnily enough never really felt in danger--just knew I had to escape.) Maybe it was telling me to escape the clutches of gluten!! Cos I don't have these any more. Have other much better dreams -

De British empire for yah. They has an insidious influence all \'round the world (Malt!!!!) vinegar wif fish and chips is hayness. ARCHIVED Anyone With Rheumatoid Arthritis?
mushroom replied to kimis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I somehow missed the remainder of this thread after I posted initially. I am sorry that your son went on to develop the arthritis part of psoriatic arthritis even while on a gluten free diet. It does seem like PsA is resistant to improvement on the diet, and I am not sure why. Certainly, I started the diet with high hopes that both would miraculously... -
ARCHIVED Anyone With Rheumatoid Arthritis?
mushroom replied to kimis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Rachel, I was just rereading this thread and noticed this post that I had not really seen and/or absorbed before. Are you making any progress in solving your issues? I had no idea that you were in so much pain. My heart goes out to you. At least your daughter is getting some relief -
ARCHIVED Negative Celiac Diagnosis - What Now?
mushroom replied to samantha73's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think you have made the right decision, Samantha. Lactose intolerance often goes along with damage to the villi in the small intestine because it is at the tip of the villi that lactase is produced to digest the lactose. If gluten has caused damage to the villi then you have difficulty with lactose and it just ferments in your stomach and causes gas and... -

T'is lunchtime here now by the time I got through wif readin' all the psillyness. And t'is raining down here but just a ways away it is snowing up on the hills we look at across the gully canyon when we can see 'em thru the rain. And the harbour is full of cloud and no sailboats today for sure. Brrrr. Getting to be time to fly north for sure. A... -
ARCHIVED Other Intolerance After Going Gluten Free?
mushroom replied to Katea's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Like the above poster, I always knew I had a bit of a problem with soy (had tested mildly sensitive to it many years ago) and kind of avoided it (no tofu, e.g., but not fanatically). Post gluten free I was eating gluten free processed foods which I had carefully checked for gluten status and not soy. Pretty soon I broke out in a horrible red itchy rash... -
ARCHIVED What Are The Symptoms Of Celiac Disease?
mushroom replied to dealrocker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, and welcome to the forum. Alas, there is no particular set of symptoms which define celiac disease, which is one of the reasons it is so hard to diagnose. The former classic case of celiac was the child who failed to thrive, was underweight with distended belly, and digestive symptoms of either diarrhea, constipation, or sometimes alternating... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Food
mushroom replied to mxmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome to the forum, mxmom. I don't know anything about North Carolina, but most supermarkets everywhere have either a gluten free section or a list of gluten free foods; health food stores have gluten free flours and other stuff like cookies and pasta; asian markets if you have any are often a source of gluten free things like tamari sauce, etc; if... -
ARCHIVED Why Do Some People With Celiac Disease Look So Healthy And Other's Don't
mushroom replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think what happens for we gainers is that the body is "starved" for the proper nutrients, and therefore thinks it is not getting enough food, period, and goes into conservation mode to prepare for the long term famine it expects. It doesn't know there is no famine and it doesn't need the fat, it just needs the nutrients it isn't getting. -
ARCHIVED Why Do Some People With Celiac Disease Look So Healthy And Other's Don't
mushroom replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have resumed some of the activities I bowed out of last year because I just wasn't up to it, and everywhere I go now, people are saying, "Wow, you look a lot better". Well I knew I was feeling bad but hadn't realized I was *looking* that bad. -
ARCHIVED Your Daily Vitamin Regimen?
mushroom replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In principle, I agree with that. Do not do it myself. I am down to: Mega B complex every day Mega Multi Mineral every day 50,000 units D3 once a month B12 injections every 3 months
