  1. I went gluten-free in November 2007. Had bad flu Christmas that year and that's when the ear-ringing started. just in my right ear. I blamed it on the flu Now I am starting to wonder. It is not constantly constant but enough to be thoroughly disconcerting, and it could have some relationship to digestive upsets. Is there any other way to get B12...
  2. Or a decaf coffee versus a caffeinated version
  3. Hi Dana, and welcome. If your husband has been continuously eating gluten, yes do get him in for a celiac panel right away. He doesn't even need to be in the middle of a severe attack, just needs to have not stopped eating gluten. Do a google search on here to make sure that his doctor orders all the tests. There is a chance he will still test negative...
  4. I'm not sure how easy it is to just come here and work. They have specific programs for seasonal workers, like apple picking and stuff like that, but otherwise there is a points system for those who want to come here. If you have a job skill that is in high demand, are the right age, speak English, that kind of thing, counts in your favour. But they are...
  5. I keep getting the feeling that this whole thing is like how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. The fact that no medical professional even considered doing a celiac test of any kind on me nor even considered the possibility, tells me that the medical profession cannot be trusted to handle our health care on this issue. I don't give a hoot what...
  6. It does get to be a dilemma; what should I eat versus what can I not afford not to eat, and what is making the difference anyway. After gluten and soy, nearly all nightshades (occasional potato and a slice or two of tomato in a BLT), and most outright corn--not including corn syrup--my husband asked if I wanted some corn on the cob. I said just a very small...
  7. I'm asking our food network to add the show down here too! They often have 5-10 min slots where they fit in things like this. Wonderful!
  8. Yep, had that problem for 45 years before gluten-free. No medical professional was interested. Menopause along with that was living hell. Racing heart with heavy thumping; had to have valium to get to sleep. I still have it a little bit but nothing like it used to be. At this point, I am not thinking yet of avoiding any more foods. having quit gluten...
  9. Hi Jamie: I was overweight when I diagnosed myself a year ago; have lost 44 lbs.
  10. Okay, but given all that, if you have other autoimmune diseases (RA, psoriasis), does that mean you are more likely to be celiac than gluten intolerant??
  11. That's interesting. Oats were the first thing I ever reacted to. Way back in high school I was made to eat oatmeal porridge for breakfast and would end up in the loo sometime during the morning doubled over with cramps.
  12. Well, I haven't either, and I wore my C- grade in a class as a badge of honor after being given a closed-book take-home final on which we were to spend 3 hours. It was in a legal writing class and the exam was much too long to be completed in that time. I did what I could. So did a gal I was working with. And she ended up with the same grade I did--we...
  13. I don't think three days was long enough to get the gluten out of your system. I always used to swear I could not be gluten intolerant because I ALWAYS felt good after eating pizza. You need to give it a much longer trial==you were still detoxing.
  14. I have dual New Zealand/US citizenship, because New Zealand is one of those countries that will always recognize you as a citizen if you were born here. Michelle, who just arrived from Colorado Springs, has dual ciizenship. Most of the people around us here have become NZ citizens and in doing so have had to lose their citizenship from country of origin...
  15. Well, there are a few formalities to be observed first....Don't do like I did at 22 and arrive in Germany to live without a work permit, residence permit or a job. They kinda frown on things like that, especially the Germans where everything has to have a stempel and be in order. It did work out for me in the end with a lot of luck. Sometimes it's not...
  16. I second the prolotherapy suggestion. I have had it in the past in the SI joint, in my ankle, for my fibula which wouldn't stay in place, etc., etc., and am currently having treatment for a thoracic back injury (third one tomorrow--hurray). The glucose solution they inject (along with some anesthetic) sends an irritant message to the brain that triggers...
  17. Even if all the diagnostic testing of you and/or family members should come back negative, you can always go the genetic testing route to test for susceptibility for celiac disease.
  18. The short answer is, it sounds incredibly likely to me. Get in for testing before you heal too much so that your testing comes out negative, if testing is the course you choose, and you may want to do this because of your children who can inherit this from you. They can test both you and your children for the genetic inheritance that allows celiac to be...
  19. Lots of things can cause hair loss when our bodies are out off whack. For me medications are the#1 cause. Nearly all the antibiotics, most of the meds I have tried for my rheumatoid arthritis, have all caused hair loss. I believe also that gluten did too. Nine months after going gluten-free I started noticing less hair in my brushes and now I think my...
  20. One of the members of my afternoon bridge group always puts out a bowl of nuts, preserved ginger, etc., for me when she brings out the gluteny cake for everyone else. My husband is very good since he needs to be gluten-free too and does a lot of the shopping, but I always have to read his labels because he will bring me things with soy, or caffeine, and...
  21. Well, there is one I know of that recommends a gluten-free diet, and that is ankylosing spondylitis, one of the rheumatoid auto-immune diseases. In fact, that is why I gave up gluten. I figured that if it could help with AS in might also help me with my RA. At that time I didn't even know there was either a blood test or an endoscopic test that could diagnose...
  22. Without intending to rain on your rant, this bar sounds like a disaster to me. I wouldn't have got beyond the first ingredient!! But I certainly run a mile when I see "malt". To think as a child I had to consume three tablespoons full after dinner every night. "Ingredients Whole Grain Rolled Oats , ... Crisp Rice with Soy Protein ... Soy Protein Concentrate...
  23. You will probably have noticed if you have been reading on this forum that the biggest problem most of us face is getting a diagnosis. So many of us have self-diagnosed because no one even thought to test us. On the other hand, there are many false negatives on the blood test and many grades of intestinal damage before a biopsy is read as positive. I personally...
  24. DH has the same blood type (and is gluten intolerant). He was always told not to routinely donate; they would call him when they needed him. This is supposedly a very common blood type in the American Indian, by the way, so he was an especially important donor in the army.
