  1. I will not eat anything made by the Rice Dream company. I am not super sensitive and have not had a reaction, but I find their practice of using a barley-derived flavoring (however small an amount) in some of their products while not declaring it on the label and actually marking the product "Gluten Free" to be dishonest and abhorrent. Rice Dream makes a...
  2. Here's my opinion: Start with the food, and any cosmetics or lotions you're likely to ingest. If you regularly slather your hands with lotion during the day, make sure it doesn't contain wheat. Your lipstick and any lip gloss or lip balm should be gluten-free. Any vitamins, supplements, or medications that you take must also be gluten-free. Your toothpaste...
  3. I've seen that study, too, but it seems to only apply to late pregnancy, not the critical first 6 weeks or so when the neural tube is formed. Before pregnancy and during the first trimester, too much folic acid should be safer than not enough -- but still only under the advice and knowledge of a treating physician. Folic acid is water-soluable so excess...
  4. The only thing I have to add is that a visit with your OBGYN or your midwife for a pre-conception check-up is a very good idea. Some routine bloodwork may be in order including things like checking for your Measles and Chicken Pox immunities, iron levels, and the like. A more complete vitamin-sufficiency work-up might be warranted because of the Celiac disease...
  5. I would be surprised if Celiac and morning sickness have a lot to do with each other, except perhaps the fact that Celiacs will get worse instead of better on a diet of saltine crackers. Those of you with H.G. probably should not read this... I don't want to make anybody feel bad... I have never had any morning sickness. My first 2 kids were pre-diagnosis...
  6. My first two babies were unplanned, and that was pre-diagnosis (and really pre-acute-symptoms). I did have trouble growing a properly-sized baby the first time, and I wonder whether that might have been due to my otherwise asymptomatic gluten problems. I just got confirmation that I am now in fact pregnant after fertility treatments. We started trying...
  7. I just found out that I am pregnant! I am so excited. Yay. We have been either trying or else trying to figure out how to try for about 6 years now (ironically, the infertility issues have been on hubby's side, not anything to do with Celiac). Anyway, I am thinking about trying to follow Dr. Brewer's pregnancy diet. It shouldn't be too hard since it's...
  8. No, there's no surefire way to diagnose Celiac or know the difference between Celiac and some other gluten intolerance unless you're eating gluten consistently for a period of time. Tests MAY come back positive for Celiac, but negative results will be questionable. Frankly, negative results are questionable enough even on a full-gluten diet. But it...
  9. So I was determined to make these tonight, but then realized I don't have coconut oil! I used Crisco instead. Unhealthy, I know, but I hope it works. They're in the oven now. I'll try dumplings a different night... after I figure out whether they work with Crisco. ;-) I will definitely add coconut oil to my grocery list, though. -Elizabeth
  10. Tell Hubby to find a friend's house or go to the in-laws next year to make his bread, or adapt it to a gluten-free recipe so he can share it with you. I don't even allow non-gluten-free flour in the house anymore. A loaf of bread is allowed (in its own area with its own Toxic Toaster). TV dinners for the non-gluten-free people are allowed. Regular crackers...
  11. Thank you. My mom actually suggested the ice cream maker when we were talking last night. I think that's a good idea. It's got to be better than buying Coconut Bliss ice cream for $6/pint (not that I wouldn't do it occasionally for him). I suggested he just cut back and not worry about cutting it out until we figure out what we're doing. It took me probably...
  12. LOL. I thought the title of this thread was a joke (like we can blame everything, even a badly running car on gluten!). But yes, my tummy is much quieter. Not any flatter, though... I'm afraid I can't blame my fat entirely on gluten, although I am -slowly-slowly- losing weight since I've been gluten-free whereas I couldn't lose weight to save my life before...
  13. Yes, that. ^^ Also, I have Oral Allergy Syndrome -- a localized allergic reaction to several fruits and vegetables. Since I've been gluten-free I can tolerate small amounts of those things I couldn't eat at all before. For example, I still can't sit down and eat a full-sized carrot, but I can pop one or two baby carrots in my mouth or not have to worry...
  14. I didn't know that wasn't normal. My husband says he can't hear his pulse. I often hear my pulse if it's not being drowned out by a louder noise. I only really find it annoying when I'm trying to get to sleep at night. It's worse when I lay on my side but doesn't go away in any position. It doesn't happen ALL the time, but most of the time. I have no idea...
  15. My cramps are one thing that have not improved since going gluten-free. However, at least I don't have menstrual cramps AND Big D, AND bowel cramping, AND nausea... it's a lot easier to deal with just PMS cramps when I'm not dealing with everything else on top of it. -Elizabeth
  16. The Enterolab suggestions say goat's milk is out, too. It has less casein in it than cow's milk, but that's not the same as no casein. I think it would be like a Celiac eating Spelt... not as bad as wheat, maybe, but still bad. So far my son doesn't think he has a problem with ANY milk. Or, at least, he doesn't want to admit he has a problem with it. ...
  17. These are his results: He has 2 copies of the gluten-sensitivity gene, and a clear positive to gluten (even though our household is almost entirely gluten-free and he gave up gluten on his own several weeks before the test). He doesn't have the Celiac-specific gene but I don't think that matters much. He's OK with going without gluten because he's already...
  18. ^^ THAT! I eat better now than I ever did before, because GONE are the cheap frozen foods and top ramen and stuff-baked-with-mushroom-soup. Instead, I've learned to cook from scratch! It's hard when I'm away from home, but in my own home I am no longer missing out on anything.
  19. Your medical conditions are none of your supervisor's business. How your doctor diagnoses you with Celiac is also none of your supervisor's business. Your doctor can diagnose you with Celiac based on your SYMPTOMS and your genetic screening without having a "positive test." This is up to your doctor's discretion. But if he diagnoses you, then you...
  20. Be careful on the vit. D. We get some of it from our food (fortified foods) and some from the sun, and then when you add supplements on top of that you CAN OVERDOSE. Oversosing on Vit. D. causes liver damage. I would not take mega doses of vit. D. without being directed by a doctor and having levels checked regularly. Perhaps your endo will be willing...
  21. I started out by just reducing the gluten in my diet. Just major things... like using corn tortillas instead of bread, or rice instead of pasta. After only a few days, I got so the idea of taking "just a bite" of something like a cupcake or a brownie made my stomach turn. This was because, once I was off most gluten, the difference in how I felt when I...
  22. I took a different approach to my concern about the cruelty and food safety issues. I started my own farm. My sheep are very well cared for. Some of them may have a few unpleasant last moments, but they don't last long. We don't do our own slaughter, so I am very careful in my selection of slaughter/butcher facilities. Of course not everyone can go that...
  23. Yes, Leapin Lemurs is supposed to be gluten-free. I didn't like it very much, though. I like the Panda Puffs and the Koala Krisps, but the Leapin Lemurs was bleh. The cereal. Now the Leapin Lemurs BARS kick a$$. I don't eat any of them very often, though.
  24. All of the GUITTARD brand chocolate and other flavor baking chips are gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link
  25. I'd love some tips on hamburger buns, too. My mom bought me one of those muffin-top pans for my birthday, and I guess people make hamburger buns in those. I used the gluten-free pantry bread mix. I got some decent rolls out of it, but they really weren't shaped right for buns. The dough is too sticky to roll into balls, and it doesn't go into a smooth...
