The only things that help me are avoiding dairy and chewing pepto bismol tablets.

ARCHIVED Chex Poll
brigala replied to brigala's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you for the voting and comments, folks. I think it's really helpful to get a handle on what we're dealing with here. We don't have a lot of numbers yet, but so far it looks like twice as many people are OK with chex as are having problems. But that's still a pretty significant group of people having problems. Maybe after this poll runs a bit longer... -
ARCHIVED Grain Free Casein Free Biscuits
brigala replied to nasalady's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for posting this! I can't wait to try it! A friend of mine ordered some of the super fine blanched almond flour for me the other day, so we could split the shipping costs. I have coconut flour here. I am not particularly avoiding grain, but I really want to focus on making sure the foods I eat aren't wasted calories -- that they're packed with nutrition... -
ARCHIVED 2009 Thanksgiving Disasters
brigala replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks, Ahorsesoul. I'm feeling a better, but still not eating real food yet. My turkey's in the oven now... don't know whether I'll be able to eat it or not, but I can't let it sit in the cooler forever. At least the rest of the family can enjoy it. I'm coping with gatorade and rice cakes today (Lundberg brand!). -
That's almost exactly how my mom does it, except without the added sugar. That would make it too sweet for my tastes, but I know some people like their desserts really sweet. My mom just slices the cube of butter over the top and lets it melt in the oven. But this is how she's always made cobbler... fruit + sugar/flavors as necessary, add a cake mix...

I'm just curious to know how many of us are doing fine with CHEX and how many of us aren't. I made 4 options for the poll because there is a little grey area. I have not had any problem whatsoever with any of the Chex cereals, although occasionally I do have problems from putting milk on them. If I use almond milk I can eat them all day long with no adverse...

ARCHIVED Progresso Soups
brigala replied to celiackitcat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen Progresso mushroom soup on any store shelf. I didn't even know they made a mushroom soup until I found out recently online. I checked Progresso's website and they don't list any retailers anywhere in my area that carry it. I'm so sad. I have, however, found about 4 different Progresso soups labeled Gluten Free recently. They do seem... -
ARCHIVED 2009 Thanksgiving Disasters
brigala replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My Thanksgiving disaster -- Since I'm by far not the only Celiac in my family, my mom was doing a full gluten-free Thanksgiving at her house (2 hours away). I sent the kids down on the train but I couldn't go because I have a litter of puppies to care for this year. I planned to cook a gluten-free Thanksgiving here at home, but came down with a... -
ARCHIVED Ate Tg Dish That Had Cream Of Soups....
brigala replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Progresso Cream of Mushroom soup is gluten-free. But I've never seen it in a store around here. I don't think it's typical but I have heard some people get a little more tolerant of occasional small-scale glutening after they've had a chance to really heal. But the damage is still being done so it's no excuse for being lax. I don't always have... -
ARCHIVED Introducing Gluten To A Toddler When The Rest Of The Family Is gluten-free?
brigala replied to BlueTaelon's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think any significant reaction would be normal. I eat new foods all the time and my body doesn't have to get used to them. Remember the first time you ate something made from teff flour? Or quinoa? Or some other weird thing us Celiacs eat that nobody else does? People get new foods introduced throughout their lives, and if they have a reaction they... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Eggs?
brigala replied to travelthomas's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think it matters how much or how little genome we share with cows. The fact remains that cows DO digest differently than we do. I don't think anybody can argue that the digestive system of a ruminant is very similar to the digestive system of an omnivore like humans. So this offers a plausible explanation why gluten may show up in human milk but... -
I'm sorry. I know it's so hard, especially for people who don't have violent reactions to gluten. I hope you don't get too sick. Be sure to tell your hubby how this little cheating episode made you feel, with the heartburn and the bloating, and any other symptoms that might crop up over the next few days. Maybe it will even help him understand when you...

ARCHIVED Invisible Fencing For Dogs
brigala replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We keep bluetick coonhounds, and they are notorious wanderers! We use the PetSafe invisible fence along with their heaviest-duty stubborn-dog shock collar. AND we have a 4-foot chain-link fence. Some of our dogs we've had over the years have done OK with one or the other, but the combination of the two keeps all the dogs safely in the yard. Our current... -
ARCHIVED Taste Of The Wild Dog Food
brigala replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We feed our dogs the Diamond Naturals foods. They do contain barley, but no wheat or corn. I am not concerned about the recalls a few years back... almost all dog foods end up on recall lists from time to time. With Diamond, several years ago they got that one really bad batch of corn and that was a disaster but they changed a lot since then (and, again,... -

ARCHIVED Gluten In Eggs?
brigala replied to travelthomas's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had a problem with eggs, but I have thought about switching what I feed my chickens to something that doesn't contain gluten. This is primarily so I can stop handling gluten-filled feed. We've already stopped feeding our sheep COB (Corn-Oats-Barley) and give them alfalfa pellets instead when we want to give them a treat. We rarely eat our sheep... -
I would wait the 5-6 months. The first couple months gluten-free are just a learning period. You'll be making a lot of mistakes and still getting gluten during that time. Also, if you are going to consent to your doctor's suggestion of a follow-up biopsy (this is standard, by the way, and I think it's important), it would make sense not to be pregnant when...

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Alone...first Mourning Experience
brigala replied to jensey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For reasons unrelated to Celiac I was unable to travel out of town to have Thanksgiving with my family this year. I sent the kids on the train to do Thanksgiving at my mom's house (one kid is gluten-free but that's OK because so is my mom and my sister so he was really looking forward to Grandma's Gluten Free Thanksgiving). Anyway, when my step-daughter... -
This place has a customizable burger which can be ordered "in a bowl" instead of "on a bun." The website doesn't have any allergen or gluten information, though. In the NEWS section, it does mention something about a vegetarian burger being made with bread crumbs, so clearly their veggie burger is out. It also says their beef burgers are made from 10...

Although our dogs are not strictly outdoor dogs, they are only fed outdoors and their food is stored in the outdoor kennel. So I don't worry about barley in their food. Their food is wheat-free and that's good enough for me. I always wash my hands when I come in from my outdoor animal chores anyway. If I were storing their food or feeding them in my kitchen...

ARCHIVED Injectable Fertility Meds & Gluten? Anybody Know Anything?
brigala replied to brigala's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thank you for the replies. My gut feeling is that the regular stuff is fine. I just got off the phone with the Kaiser OB/GYN clinic and it sounds like I may be able to get the meds through the Kaiser pharmacy. The regular progesterone is on their formulary, so I'll need a good reason to get the other stuff if I want to get it through them. SO... what... -
ARCHIVED Injectable Fertility Meds & Gluten? Anybody Know Anything?
brigala posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
So, I'm about to undergo some fertility treatments... Among other things, I will need an injectable progesterone treatment for an unknown period of time -- a minimum of two weeks The fertility clinic says that it's usually suspended in a "food oil" base, typically sesame oil, but the NP is concerned that the base MAY contain gluten. I am not sure why she... -
Nature-Made's prenatal vitamins are marked gluten-free right on the bottle. They are available at Costco and not particularly expensive. Of course, they're not FREE, either. Just thought I'd share in case anybody who can't get free prenatals might be looking for an affordable national brand they can use. That's cool that you can get free vitamins. I've...

ARCHIVED Enterolab Vs. Bloodwork/endoscopy
brigala replied to sunnybabi1986's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It depends. I started noticing a difference with my GI issues when I began cutting back gluten. That is, I discovered that when I'd be without for a couple of days, and then ate gluten, I'd feel like crap again immediately. I also discovered this way that spelt was just as bad as wheat (I was hoping I could just do wheat-free and not gluten-free, but no such... -
ARCHIVED I Just Ordered The Enterolab Test For My Son...
brigala replied to brigala's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, everyone. Pewpew - His pediatrician did not make any referrals and didn't think any follow-up was warranted after a negative test. But he wasn't having any GI symptoms at the time. Now his GI symptoms are still mild so I doubt I'd be able to get her to order any additional tests. And we wouldn't be able to get insurance to pay for it unless she...
