  1. It should be ok, but there's always a risk of contamination when we eat anything we didn't grow in our own back yard. There are other things besides gluten which lettuce is more likely to be contaminated with -- anything from pesticides to e. coli. However, going without salad isn't healthy, either. So probably the best you can do is make sure you wash it...
  2. I also take Zyrtec fairly regularly. Claratin doesn't do a thing for my allergies (and it may be my imagination, but I actually think it makes them worse). Allegra works better for me than Zyrtec, but I've never had a problem with Zyrtec and it works pretty well. I wonder if the guy you spoke to may have been confused; not only is it contrary to their published...
  3. Looks like the same sort of thing as Kikkoman's tests that show their soy sauce is gluten-free even though it contains wheat. My theory is that if you change (denature) the gluten proteins enough you will no longer be able to detect them with a gluten test, and some people's immune systems will not recognize them and react to them -- but other people...
  4. Or if you can make a single-serving portion of bread! Look at this thread: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...ment+gone+right I use either this recipe or Pamela's or Gluten Free Pantry's. Those are my favorite. I like Bob's Red Mill ok, but after a while I get tired of the beany flavor. Actually, I like it a LOT for occasional use; for some...
  5. I like these. They don't carry them at my local Big Lots, so I'm stuck ordering them from a major online retailer. I was surprised to find out that the case of 3 was cheaper (price per package) than the case of 6. They're the cheapest gluten-free pasta I've found, and I like them about as well as anything. Unfortunately, my mother and sister are also...
  6. Yes, but be sure to research the grinder you want to buy. Some handle "alternative" grains better than others. I don't grind anything, so no suggestions yet. Masa is widely available and is cheap. I use it extensively for frying fish. It's also good for thickening things like homemade chili. I'm going to try making fried chicken using crushed Corn Chex...
  7. Not yet, but I still want to. Right now, I am working through a case of corn pasta I bought online, and can't justify buying more pasta until it's mostly gone. I have heard it can be bought in some grocery stores, so I need to start looking for it and see if I can avoid the shipping!!! Thank you for your feedback! I think I will definitely try them when...
  8. Both very good suggestions. If you try those and they don't help, see your doctor. There are medical conditions which will cause a constant feeling of hunger. But try the suggestions, first. Make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need. See a registered dietitian if you're not sure how to do that. Going gluten-free upsets our whole sense of what we...
  9. Do you mind if I ask where you got this information? I contacted Hershey recently and asked them about their labeling policy in regards to gluten. This was their (obviously canned) response:
  10. If the only difference is the yeast, and if the 360 bread is more economical, it might make sense to buy the yeast packets seperately and just use good yeast with it... Just a thought. I don't have a Whole Foods nearby, so I buy the Gluten Free Pantry or Pamela's online. -Elizabeth (Also of Irish heritage) (Maybe we should organize an American Celiac...
  11. Not only that, but they're the BEST TASTING. They're the only store-cooked chickens my picky-eater husband will even eat. I appreciate that they say right on the sign at my Costco that they're gluten-free. YUM YUM YUM. Who needs KFC anyway?
  12. I emailed them in Sept. 2007, and at that time all of their fruit pie fillings were gluten-free. And yes, they were made by Bird's Eye. Of course, things change, so it might not hurt to check with them again. In the meantime, I use the Wilderness pie fillings regularly. I'm not super-sensitive, though, so just because I haven't had a problem doesn't necessarily...
  13. If you are looking for gluten-free seasoning mixes for chili and other foods, try Williams brand. Not all their stuff is gluten-free, but they have a long list on their website: Open Original Shared Link I particularly enjoy the SunBird brand Chinese food seasoning mixes on the list. Some minor substituting in preparation (gluten-free soy sauce, corn...
  14. Those are some pretty high standards. I am not sure I would hesitate to occasionally eat a soup or something that wasn't on the list, after having carefully read the ingredient list and not seen any wheat, barley, rye, or other suspicious ingredients. I am sure I would feel differently if I were a super-sensitive. -Elizabeth
  15. I like to use McCormick brand seasonings because their labels are clear and easy to read If there is gluten in a product, it will not only be in the list but it will be in boldface, as are all of the "top 8" allergens. I think I've seen some other allergens that aren't in the top 8 listed in boldface, too.
  16. I know this is an old thread, but in light of today's promotion for 31 cent ice cream, I thought it would be good to bump it up. Since the allergen list on the Baskin Robbins website only specifies "wheat" and not other sources of gluten, I called this morning to ask. I was told immediately by the CS representatives that NONE of their ice creams can be...
  17. For what it's worth, I bought some frozen Mashed Sweet Potatoes at a regular grocery store today, put out by Ore-Ida I think, and it's marked Gluten-Free on the package. It's good to know that Ian's isn't quite so far out as to neglect to label a flour-dusted french fry as containing wheat. But why would they dust them with flour anyway? What a dumb...
  18. I have come to realize that the BEST taco shells are the ones you make yourself out of corn tortillas. Just fry a Mission brand or other reliable corn-only tortilla on both sides in a little corn oil, and then fold it over when you take it out of the pan to cool. It doesn't take more than a few seconds for each one. There are probably pre-made shells...
  19. My fish food isn't gluten-free but it comes in a nice handy shaker and is in pellet form, so it doesn't get all over the place and I don't have to ever touch it. Also, wheat isn't the top ingredient (but it's in there). It's Top Fin Color Enhancing Betta Bits. I initially got it when I had bettas, but they died, so after consulting with the fish store to...
  20. Thank you for posting this! I was JUST at the grocery store with a friend, and she bought some of these to take home. If you hadn't posted, I probably would have shared some with her later! It's not a problem for her, so no harm done, I guess. I'm glad you posted. How many companies are still doing this, using flour in manufacturing and not listing it...
  21. If it were me in your shoes, I'd go ahead and eat it today, but call the manufacturer before you buy any more of it. The reality is, a week into your diagnosis, you WILL still be making mistakes. I would not worry YET about it being produced on shared lines. Probably almost everything in your kitchen is still contaminated with gluten, and will be for...
  22. These are supposed to be made of pure fiber, no gluten, no soy, no useable calories, no net carbs. They're kind of spendy, though. Has anybody tried them? You can google "miracle noodle," shiritaki, or Konjac to get an idea of what I'm talking about if you haven't seen them before. Has anybody tried more than one version of this noodle? Comparisons...

    ARCHIVED Kfc

To the extent that KFC does? I don't think there are many restaurants out there (with the possible exception of bakeries) which as flour-laden as KFC. Even their mashed potatoes have flour in them. I wouldn't even buy a fountain drink from KFC. Sure, lots of restaurants have flour around, and there's always a risk of cc. My own kitchen isn't even entirely...
  24. I finally got my first box of the new Corn Chex at Winco in Gresham today! Woohoo! Their "flavored" Chex varieties were still the old ones. But I just enjoyed my first bowl of Corn Chex in longer than I can remembered. With Hazlenut milk, because I'm having a bad lactose day. It's actually pretty good with hazlenut milk. -Elizabeth
  25. I'm confused; I would think "Nesquick" and "Homemade Hot Chocolate" would be mutually exclusive. When I think of homemade hot chocolate, I think of maybe baking chocolate squares and sugar and vanilla and milk... What is it about your friend's recipe that is homemade, and what is it that you like about it? Maybe post the whole recipe here and we can help...
