  1. I've been taking Singulair every day since it was new on the market, and never had an issue with it. I know that doesn't mean a whole bunch, though. I'm sorry you reacted to it.
  2. Welcome! The diet is overwhelming at first, but really it does get easier. Keep in mind that even if your blood tests come back negative for Celiac, if you have symptoms that are consistent with Celiac you might want to try the gluten-free diet anyway. The blood tests are not always accurate. I would probably not recommend that you start the diet immediately...
  3. I made the cookies yesterday for 4th of July. Out of 13 people here, I am the only person on a gluten-free diet. And I was the only one who wasn't impressed with the cookies. LOL! It's just not my favorite "type" of chocolate chip cookie. It was still good, though... and my husband, who never really liked my pre-gluten-free chocolate chip cookie recipe, loved...
  4. I would shop in a place like that. You wouldn't have to just carry specialty foods... normal things like Heinz ketchup and Ore-Ida frozen potatoes and zillions of Kraft products could be there and know that your crew has screened the items before including them in your store. By doing that, you could easily attract neighborhood grocery shoppers that don't...
  5. My mom has a classic allergy response to the Bob's Red Mill bread, which is made with the garbonzo/fava combo. We're guessing it's the fava beans, but for fear of a more severe reaction we haven't tried to narrow it down for sure. I've heard that there's some kind of fava intolerance people can have that's genetic, but I don't know much about it. Sorry...
  6. Has anybody checked the Chex website for gluten-free recipes recently? They have a ton of newly added recipes, some of which include these Betty Crocker mixes. I saw one for a brownie that involved Chex cereal and the Betty Crocker gluten-free brownies that looked really good. I can't wait to find it on store shelves, since I can't quite bring myself to buy...
  7. The Retailer-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named sells it. They have an ingredients list posted for the chocolate chip flavor. I don't see ingredients posted for the vanilla sprinkles flavor, but even if there's no wheat starch listed, there are probably oats (non-gluten-free) and I'm always suspicious of "natural flavors" in cereals or other sweets (although...
  8. Kikkoman claims their Soy Sauce is gluten free even though it contains wheat. They say that the process breaks down all the gluten. I have heard of very sensitive Celiacs that do fine with soy sauce, and moderately sensitive celiacs who have trouble with it. Personally, I haven't tried it since going gluten-free. It's not worth the risk for me. It probably...
  9. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive, but when I've seen others comment on the ingredients they've mentioned soy and milk as allergens in the box. I haven't heard anything about soy or egg. I will post back when my case of cookie mix arrives in the mail.
  10. I use straight Masa flour for breading everything. Everyone in my family likes it except my step-daughter, who says it tastes "like tortillas." I suppose that's because of the lime in the masa, but I don't think plain corn flour would have that problem; and the rest of us aren't reminded of tortillas while we're eating our fried fish. I'm the only one...
  11. I haven't seen them in any local stores yet, but I just signed up on the Retailer-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named website to be notified when they become available there. Usually, I buy one locally first before buying a case online, but the reviews on these are so good I think I'm willing to just buy a case if their price is reasonable.
  12. BRM bread mix -- I like it OK, and I buy it occasionally. I like that it's high fiber and relatively high protein. I like the flavor of Pamela's or Gluten Free Pantry better. BRM Cornbread -- I like it, and I use it exclusively now. My family will pretty much clear out a package along with chili or my Mexican version of a shepherd's pie. It makes a better...
  13. I don't know, but according to their website, Nicorette is Gluten-Free. Maybe that would be a better route for you as you are trying to quit. Good luck. I've never smoked, but my husband did for many years. He quit before I met him, but he says it was REALLY HARD -- and SO worth it. He quit a couple of times before it "stuck," but once he'd really really...
  14. So far, all the Kix I've found that are the new formula have been in a drastically different-looking box. It has what looks like an ear of corn on the front, but the kernels are Kix. I have been seeing these off and on for months, but not consistently. I always buy a box or two when I spot them. My guess is that they're not marked Gluten Free because they...
  15. I have a theory that maybe people who react to Bob's Red Mill gluten-free stuff are people who are very sensitive to oats. Although their gluten-free stuff is all done in a dedicated facility, they do process certified gluten-free oats there. How are you with oats? It's just a guess, of course. Personally, I've never had an issue with Bob's stuff. But...
  16. I like Pamela's, Gluten Free Pantry's Sandwich Bread, and Bob's Red Mill; but I only voted based on Pamela's and GFP's. I like Bob's because it has lots and lots of fiber, which I lack these days on the gluten-free diet. I don't mind that it tastes a little like beans, but my son HATES it. Everyone in my family finds Pamela's and GFP's to be passable on taste...
  17. I LOVE that stuff! But it's way too expensive as well as too fattening. So I only splurge on it once or twice a year. I also use Annie's, Trader Joe's, or make my own using whatever rice or corn pasta I can find on sale. If I'm too lazy to shred cheese, I use the Ragu cheese sauce. -Elizabeth
  18. I'm just curious -- why wheat? Even without Celiac, it would never occur to me to plant wheat in a garden. And with a Celiac in the house... what is he going to do with it? I don't imagine you're going to let him grind flour in your kitchen. Is there another use for wheat that I'm not aware of? The rest of your garden sounds wonderful. We've got a bunch...
  19. Ok, deep breath. I totally understand your frustration, especially because you're new at this, and I don't blame you for wanting to give Frito Lay an earful. I think it is probably not a bad idea to call and give them some constructive feedback once the initial anger has subsided, but it is probably a blessing that they're closed for the weekend. Remember...
  20. I get the Crunchmaster ones at Costco. Occasionally (rarely) I have found the Glutino crackers on such a good sale at "the forbidden online retail store we're not allowed to mention here" that they've actually been a reasonable price -- around $2/box. Two different types of cracker for two different purposes. The Glutino ones are good to accompany a soup...
  21. Unfortunately, she doesn't tolerate oats, either. Rice Chex would make a decent base for a trail mix, but it's still a simple carb and would need a protein to balance it out for blood sugar purposes. The pan bar sounds delicious and is probably worth investigating as a dessert. It's one thing to have a little sugar as part of a high-protein meal...
  22. I haven't looked too closely at the Lara bars because they have dates in them, which I'm allergic to, and frankly I'm allergic to almost everything that's raw. My mom doesn't have that problem, but she does tend to react to nuts if she has too many of them, or eats them more than once in a day. Are there any Lara bar flavors that don't have a lot of nuts...
  23. Most of that has MSG and a lot of it isn't gluten-free (soy sauce). Any brand ideas?
  24. My mom is Celiac, diabetic, and sensitive to corn, soy, and nuts. She needs something she can throw in her purse that doesn't need to be refrigerated & won't go bad quickly so she's not tempted to take risks with fast food while she's out running around... It can contain small amounts of corn, soy, or nuts, but can't be heavy on those things. Corn...
  25. Preferences in salad dressings are really one of those things that vary from person to person. My favorite salad dressing of all time is Newman's Own Ranch, and it's gluten-free. It would be my favorite, gluten-free or not. But my husband doesn't like it at all. KRAFT makes a lot of dressings that are gluten-free. Just read the label carefully. KRAFT...
