  1. I've had the plain ones and the multi-grain ones and I like them both. The multi-grain ones have an anise-seed flavor to them, so be aware of that; I know it's one of those flavors a lot of people dislike, but I like it. The plain ones are good alone, with stuff on them, or alongside soup. I got a couple cases on Amazon last time they were on a good...
  2. Absolutely not! This is a very good question coming from a newbie. I'm really glad you asked. As an example, I was reading the package label for some granola bars at a friend's house today. The box stated "Wheat Free" prominently on the front (these were a Barbara's Bakery brand product). Not only did the granola bar contain oats, which are questionable...
  3. Because it's cheap. I agree. It's insane. It never occurred to me that someone would put wheat in clam chowder, either, until I started the gluten-free diet. And to think that for years I actually thought you had to stew clam chowder to get the potato starch to thicken it up. I could have saved so much time (and lost so much flavor and texture) if...
  4. I go there occasionally. I am not very familiar with the area around the Hilton, though. There is an Outback Steakhouse in Sacramento. Last time I ate there, I had crouton crumbs in my salad (as if someone put them in and then took them out), but I spotted it and when I pointed it out to the waiter he appeared appropriately horrified and brought me a new...
  5. I posted a couple weeks ago about a great experience I had at Johnny Rocket's in the mall there, just across I-5 from Old Town Sac. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=56602 -Elizabeth
  6. Glutino pretzels are very good. All the other gluten-free pretzels I've had come with a funny taste. Try Annie's Rice Macaroni & Cheese, or the Trader Joe's version. They're very good. Keep an eye out for specially marked "Gluten Free" boxes of Corn Chex, Rice Chex, Strawberry Chex, Honey Nut Chex, and Chocolate Chex. General Mills is in the process...
  7. Check around and see if you can find someone locally who raises "buffalo" (bison). A bison yields so much meat, few farmers who raise it for personal use can use it all. Last year, we traded a breeding flock of sheep with another farm for a bunch of buffalo meat. You might find someone willing to sell you buffalo at a reasonable price, or willing to let you...
  8. Yipeee! I took a trip to my local "hippy market" (as my dad calls them), and they have started carrying a full line of Bavaria Mills gluten-free baked goods! I was able to get a frozen pie crust and a box of muffins. I have had the pie crust before (they carry it in a couple of health-food stores near my mom's house, but that's 2+ hours away); but this was...
  9. I use Singulair, which is gluten-free, and either Zyrtec or Allegra. I also use Visene-A for "allergy eyes," and when it gets really bad I add benadryl on top of it all at bedtime.
  10. From reading this, it sounds like LittleMissPatient probably is really looking for different varieties of sweet potatoes (those which we call Yams in the US), not actual African/Asian yams. If that's the case, then the "yams" she's likely to find here probably are botanically related to the sweet potatoes she already eats, and most likely will be just fine...
  11. I went through the same thing, trying to go to school and get something to eat that would be portable and not cost an arm and a leg. My mom bought me one of these "Salad Break" bowls: Open Original Shared Link for Christmas. I love it! I make a chef's salad with hard boiled egg, ham, and cheese, put my Newman's Own Ranch (my favorite) in the little dressing...
  12. Ah... the frustrating "very sensitive" -- how frustrating! I have quite a few other food issues (not quite as many as you) but at least I am not in the super-sensitive category. That would limit things quite a bit further! Old Wisconsin meat snacks are marked Gluten-Free right on the package, but they do contain MSG, which it seems a lot of Celiacs have...
  13. Most (but not all) carob chips I've been able to find are "grain sweetened" and include barley. I was allergic to chocolate as a child, and although I can eat chocolate now I still think of carob as a comfort food. I'm always on the lookout for gluten-free carob. I can't eat the Enjoy Life products, either. They contain dates, which I'm allergic...
  14. My husband was recently prescribed Nasorel for a sinus infection. Nasorel is in the same family as Nasonex. He also had a suspiciously gluten-like reaction to it. The nausea was so bad he almost didn't make it through work yesterday, and was still sick this morning; he didn't take it this morning and eventually it wore off and he made it to work late. He...
  15. It should be fine. My husband hunts deer in and around my uncle's wheat farm. Once he accidentally cut the stomach of the deer while cleaning it, and out came wheat meal!! Even so, unless some of it had spilled onto the meat, it should be safe to eat. I don't hesitate to eat any of the wild game my husband brings home from my uncle's ranch, nor the beef my...
  16. I agree, these are good! I buy them at Fred Meyer. They're almost always out of the chocolate chip ones, but the other flavors are good, too. I don't get them real often, because they're so spendy, but they are a wonderful treat for those of us who do OK with oats. I used to buy them once in a while before they were certified gluten-free, and never...
  17. Maybe you can just ask her whether it's glazed or not, as well as the brand. I've never seen a ham with gluten in it (not proof that one doesn't exist, of course), but I've seen lots of glaze mixes that come with the ham that contain wheat starch. If it's any consolation, wheat starch is not *supposed* to have gluten in it, although I won't knowingly...
  18. It's good to know about the variations. I think I'll try it without the cocoa and replace some of the flax with rice flour. I like the whole-grain flavor for a sandwich, but I kind of prefer a "white bread" flavor with a hamburger. Maybe replacing the flax with potato flour and/or potato starch would yield something more like a potato bread?? Darn. I...
  19. I just tried this, and it works pretty well! I didn't have a microwaveable baking dish the right size, but a cereal bowl worked just fine. Since my sliced turkey was round anyway, it matched up nicely. -Elizabeth
  20. I would be even more worried about contamination in the buffet line than on the grill. Between the potential for other customers dropping things in the "gluten free" ingredients and the possibility of the grill not coming clean enough, I now avoid all mongolian grill type restaurants.
  21. LOL! That's a new one! I am always amazed at ignorance regarding gluten. My favorite one is, "No, there's no wheat in it, I only use WHITE flour." There may very well be no gluten in wheat grass, but that would be because of the absence of grain, not because gluten is created by a process. I'd need to know a whole lot more about it in order to try...
  22. Even if there is no gluten in the portion of the barley or wheat stalk used in this product, I would be very concerned about contamination from the barley or wheat grains. Also, who knows whether they put just the grass stalk in the product, or the whole thing including the grain head (and therefore the gluten)? I would definitely avoid it. -Elizabeth
  23. There are two in Seattle: Open Original Shared Link We don't have any here in Oregon, though. -Elizabeth
  24. I was traveling this week, and the other day I found myself at the mall in Downtown Sacramento looking for dinner. After quickly ruling out Panda Express and all the other restaurants in the small food court, I came across a place I'd never heard of before: Johnny Rockets. Before I went in, I looked up their website in my iPhone. Lo and behold, they have...
  25. I wonder if the "New" box you found was actually an old one. Apparently, we should be on the look-out for boxes marked "Now Gluten Free." There seem to be a few different formulas of Strawberry Chex out there, but I think they're switching over to make them all not only gluten-free but produced in a gluten-free facility. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free...
