ARCHIVED Gluten Free Foods
brigala replied to HydraWoman's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
As you're just getting started, I would suggest Mrs. Leeper's boxed meals. They cook up just like Hamburger Helper (or Tuna Helper, or Chicken Helper...). I don't use them much anymore, but they helped take some of the "OMG, what can I cook?" out of the picture when I was first starting out. I was a lousy cook, too. One huge advantage of the Celiac thing... -
ARCHIVED Melaleuca Vitamins
brigala replied to kaciemarie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've often wondered the same thing! I wish they would say in the catalog which items are gluten-free. The Gluten Free labeling must be very new. I haven't seen it before. -
ARCHIVED Are Ice Cream/gelato Shops Safe?
brigala replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure whether there any dairy-free soft-serve treats, but I always opt for soft serve (after checking that it's gluten-free of course, which leaves Baskin Robins out entirely). That way I don't have to worry about ice cream scoops going into the cookies-n-cream first. I had TCBY last night. Yum. -Elizabeth -
Thanks again, everyone. I know I'll have to have a talk to her. I couldn't do it right away because I couldn't be civil about it. I know the sign won't solve the problem, but she's passive-aggressive enough about the issues that it might actually help a little. She hides behind "I didn't know" when she talks to her dad about it, and that will be harder for...

ARCHIVED A Different Houseguest Question
brigala replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't think you should feel obligated to have any food in your house that you would not be able to eat. However, it may not hurt to adjust portions/ratios a bit. For example, if you would normally have a large garden salad and maybe a little grilled fish on it, make a larger portion of the grilled fish and let your guests have that as a main course with... -
I think this is exactly right. You just articulated it better than I did. The food thing is only one example. When MY best friend moved up to the area, she immediately befriended her and then started tell her bald-faced lies about me (like how I'd had an affair with her father and ruined his marriage with her mother, which is a complete and utter fabrication...

Thanks, everyone. I think after my husband talked to her last night, it most likely won't happen again. She doesn't care about ticking me off, but she listens to her dad, or at least pretends to. It wasn't quite as bad as last year when we invited them over to a BBQ, and the minute I turned my back her husband was putting the buns they brought over on...

ARCHIVED Cheapest Place To Buy gluten-free Foods Online
brigala replied to Becci's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
By the way, don't be afraid of using the 15% off (and free shipping) with their Subscribe-and-Save program for eligible foods. It's super easy to cancel any time, and they'll even email you a reminder before your next shipment is due to give you a chance to cancel or skip the shipment. This is NOT the equivalent of a book or C D club. ;-) -Elizabeth -
Well, for one thing, she's 36 years old, so she's not really young. For another, she constantly makes fun of me for my "allergies" behind my back, and she's very resentful of me in general. This is not really a matter of her not knowing what my rules are in my kitchen, it's a matter of her believing that it's all in my head and as long as I don't catch her...

Please let me know how this goes! I'm planning a trip there in October. According to the Disneyland website, people with special dietary needs should contact the restaurant in advance... I'd love to know what your experience is with either walk-in or advanced reservations. I've heard Disneyland is very good about accommodating people with Celiac or allergies...

ARCHIVED Cheapest Place To Buy gluten-free Foods Online
brigala replied to Becci's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've looked at a lot of places, and the only one with reasonable prices (cheaper than the store, usually) is the large online retailer that's not allowed to be named here... if you don't know where I'm talking about, think of the largest online retailer you can remember... books, electronics, etc... and it's not eBay. -Elizabeth -
I know you're right, but I'm still annoyed. But that's why I'm in here venting on the board instead of out in my kitchen yelling at that woman. Turns out she also had pizza here last night when my husband wasn't home (I've been gone all week at a conference until today). It's not like I have a 100% gluten free kitchen, but I do have designated gluten areas...

... before cooking in my kitchen? My (adult) step-daughter is here (because we have AC and she doesn't and it's really hot out). I just entered the kitchen just in time to see her putting frozen chicken breasts in my iron skillet. I grabbed the bag from her, and sure enough, the glaze on the chicken breasts has wheat in it. I dumped the chicken breasts...

ARCHIVED I Think My Shampoo Might Have Gluten!
brigala replied to glutton4gluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My shampoo has hydrolyzed wheat protein in it, and I am fine with it. In fact, I have very sensitive skin and there are only a handful of shampoos I can use without a problem; all of which happen to contain gluten. My Celiac sister, on the other hand, is unable to use cosmetics or shampoo containing gluten because they trigger problems with HER sensitive... -
ARCHIVED "no Gluten Ingredients" ? What Does This Mean?
brigala replied to beanpot's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you're not usually uber-sensitive, most likely the Amy's "no gluten ingredients" foods shouldn't hurt you. They are relatively careful, and I think the only way to be safer is to go through a company that uses a dedicated facility (which Amy's does not). I would think that the more likely possibility is that you either ate something else that's causing... -
ARCHIVED Dry Roasted Peanuts?
brigala replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would write to the manager and explain why I would not eat there again. If they can't be trusted to reveal peanuts, of all things, I wouldn't trust them with gluten, either. I have occasionally sent salads back to the kitchen because the menu didn't specify that there were cucumbers in it. I'm quite allergic to cucumbers, and that makes ordering salads... -
ARCHIVED Garden Of Eatin Yellow Corn Shells - I May Have Been Glutinized...
brigala replied to JayHowe's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
How are you doing with other corn products? Some people seem to react to corn in the same way as gluten (my mom and sister do, thank goodness I don't). The other suspect I would have would be the seasoning. I looked it up online and didn't see any suspicious ingredients, but not all companies are good about avoiding contaminations between one product... -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas
brigala replied to JBaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had the brown rice ones from Trader Joe's, and they're ok for some things but aren't pliable to wrap around anything -- even when heated. La Tortilla Factory makes a gluten-free teff-based tortilla. I had a bite of one from a friend once; she had to go all the way across town to get it and didn't have much to share. It was really good, even cold, but... -
ARCHIVED Kraft/planter's Nuts/ Just Checking...
brigala replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think so, but you should always read the label on every individual package. You never know when a formula might change. -
Garlic Jim's gets their gluten-free crusts made elsewhere. I don't know if it's the same at every location, but here in the PacNW I've been told they get them from Bavaria Mills, which is a dedicated gluten-free bakery. (They make a number of amazing gluten-free products, by the way). I can't imagine that it would be safe to eat ANYTHING that came out...

ARCHIVED Oberto's Original Beef Jerky: Beware
brigala replied to trents's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hard to say. I can't remember whether I've seen it at Costco. It's available at every other store I can think of around here, including "bargain" type grocery stores like Winco. I have also been to their factory store in Tillamook, but I suppose not everybody has that luxury. -Elizabeth -
ARCHIVED Oberto's Original Beef Jerky: Beware
brigala replied to trents's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many of the Tillamook Country Smoker jerky flavors are not only gluten-free but MSG-free as well. Open Original Shared Link And they're really good. I've always preferred them to Oberto. -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas
brigala replied to JBaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Another suggestion is to try white corn tortillas instead of yellow corn. They have a smoother texture and milder taste. They still MUST be heated, however. I toss them in the microwave if I'm in a super hurry (10 seconds or less), in my toaster oven (dedicated gluten-free only) if I'm feeling lazy but not too much of a hurry (2 minutes or so including... -
ARCHIVED Need Help With Chinese Appetizers
brigala replied to RDR's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The only thing Snopes says about reactions to soy is that it hasn't yet been proven whether soy is linked to thyroid disease and certain types of cancer. It classifies this belief as "undetermined" rather than "true" or "false." It doesn't say anything at all about intolerance or allergy to soy. -
ARCHIVED Need To Increase My Protein
brigala replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Quinoa has a lot more protein in it than many other grains. How about fish? Tuna on gluten-free rice crackers?
