Yuck. I'm sorry. I had a brain-dead moment and glutened myself for a whole week on supplements I forgot to read the label on. I was on vacation at the time and I assumed the symptoms I was having was due to CC or something from a restaurant or the kitchen utensils in the cabin or whatnot. It had been a long time since I'd had symptoms that bad, though...

ARCHIVED Midel Cookies
brigala replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm. I've eaten several different Mi-Del cookies with no reactions. My favorites are the vanilla sandwich cookies, I think. I wasn't impressed with the oreo-copies. I also like the arrowroot animal-shaped ones, but I found the ones I bought online were stale (still edible, but not delicious) whereas the ones I bought in the store were to-die-for. I think... -
Celiac can contribute to all sorts of things. It probably wouldn't be a -direct- cause of back pain, but as Fluffy points out it can cause other problems which can have a domino effect on all our bodily systems. I found that I just didn't heal well from even minor pulls, twists, and injuries when I was eating gluten. I certainly have less back pain now than...

ARCHIVED Budget For Groceries
brigala replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That only comes to about $4.30 per person per day. I think you're doing pretty well, and a lot better than a lot of Americans do even when they don't have special diets. In my brief searching, I couldn't find better deals online for the specialty foods you're getting. But you didn't mention which pasta you buy or how much it's costing you. There's a wide... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Eat For Lunch During Your Days Away From Home?
brigala replied to LadyCyclist87's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could make yourself some Nachos. Bring some refried beans, corn chips, and a home-made salsa. There are recipes for salsa that don't include tomatoes. Corn salsa comes to mind. Pack in an insulated lunch box and enjoy when you get a spare moment. Several almond or soy milks are available in single-serving juice-box style packages. This would give... -
Try ordering it by the case online. Pacific Foods and Almond Breeze should both be available online. Since it doesn't need to be refrigerated until after it's opened, it should be pretty easy to take in your truck. I buy the Pacific Foods Chocolate Almond Milk in single-serving "juice box" style boxes for when I'm on the run. It's especially helpful because...

Me too. You can find a list of my pre-gluten-free diagnoses in my sig, and the WORST of it was the fatigue. My first symptoms of accidental gluten are GI-based, severely exacerbated by dairy intake. If I know I've been slightly glutened once and can stay off dairy for a week or so, I can sometimes avoid acute symptoms all together; but that only goes...

ARCHIVED Zyrtec
brigala replied to glutengal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This was a singularly unhelpful response received by one of the generic companies making a version of Zyrtec: I'll let you know if I get any other responses. -
ARCHIVED Zyrtec
brigala replied to glutengal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, I put in email inquiries to Zyrtec as well as several generic makers of Cetirizine HCl, including the Costco and Sam's Club house brands and the brand I can buy at the Kaiser pharmacy. I'll let you all know whether I get any useful written information back from any of those companies. I sure hope one or more of these brands comes back with a good... -
ARCHIVED Zyrtec
brigala replied to glutengal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Was the children's version chewable? I think that would be likely to make a difference in formulation. This is an important question for me; I'm taking a version of Allegra now but if we end up having any more children I'll have to switch back to Zyrtec; it's the only one safe for pregnancy. I am quite literally not sure I would survive without an antihistamine... -
I totally agree. If you don't get satisfactory answers when you call the facility, don't eat there. If they seem knowledgeable but aren't sure they CAN accommodate you, you might ask them about whether they could prepare a salad for you or something. If they don't know what you're talking about, I wouldn't even trust them to prepare a salad without contaminating...

We had dinner Open Original Shared Link last night and it was delicious! Everything on the menu that was gluten-free was marked so on the menu. About half the menu (and the entire Taco menu) was marked gluten-free! It made it really easy to order and the waitress was very helpful as well. I ended up with the combo plate. It was extremely good. :-) We're...

ARCHIVED Chips, Crackers, Etc
brigala replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think it's possible to be sure any commercially prepared food is free of cross contamination. Even if gluten-free facilities, ingredients can become contaminated before they reach the facility. That being said, all flavors of Lays Staxx are made in a dedicated facility that doesn't process any gluten-containing ingredients. I like the Glutino... -
ARCHIVED Need Chocolate Chips
brigala replied to heatherjane's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you can find Guittard brand chocolate chips where you are, they are gluten-free. They don't say so on the label but it's in their FAQ on their website (ALL of their products are gluten-free). And they're yummy. They're not an expensive specialty brand, but they're not in all stores, either. Interestingly, I usually find them in "discount" stores (for... -
ARCHIVED Finds At Big Lots!
brigala replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found the rice crackers at my Big Lots, too. They only had the seaweed flavor. I thought I'd like them, but I couldn't choke them down. My husband tried, too. We ate a few hoping the flavor would just take some getting used to, but eventually we gave up and threw the bag away. Yuck. Oh well, it was a cheaper failed experiment than a lot of gluten-free foods... -
ARCHIVED Places To Shop (or Eat) In Mt?
brigala posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are there any good grocery stores in the general vicinity of West Glacier, Big Fork, Whitefish, or surrounding areas that have a decent selection of gluten-free foods? I wouldn't be opposed to some restaurant suggestions as well, but I primarily plan to cook while on vacation. I find if I eat out too often, even at celiac-friendly places, I start feeling... -
ARCHIVED Miracle Noodles -- Anybody Try These?
brigala replied to brigala's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, and where do you find the best place to buy them? Are you saying this basic yam fiber thing can be purchased in the form of a noodle and in a more cake-like form? I am imagining something about the size, shape, and consistency of those tubes of polenta. I finally found a similar noodle made from Kelp at the grocery store. I haven't been able to... -
No recipe ideas, per se, but I would pair them in something using almond flour. Almonds and cherries always match up nicely.

ARCHIVED Is It Ok To Use Shampoo/soap W/ Gluten?
brigala replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some people have problems with shampoo and stuff but most don't seem to. My shampoo contains wheat. I just make sure I thoroughly rinse before I get out of the shower. I go with the theory, "don't make it harder than it already is." I would not use a toothpaste or mouthwash that wasn't gluten-free, however. I also try to avoid hand lotions that aren... -
ARCHIVED Special Dinner Plans For Preschool Celiac Grand Daughters
brigala replied to sandwich girl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
As long as they're not egg-allergic, the old "Dutch Baby" or "German Pancake" recipe works very well with gluten-free flour. I've tried a couple of gluten-free flour mixes, including Bob's Red Mill and Arrowhead Mills, I think, and it works just fine. In that, it's the eggs that do most of the holding-together and the rising, so gluten is unnecessary. You... -
Yup. I agree.

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cake Mix Without Potato Starch
brigala replied to JJF's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Try Open Original Shared Link. Their mixes are gluten and potato free. The first cake I tried after going gluten-free was Namaste and it was very good. I would definitely buy it again, but I bought it at Whole Foods and the location near me went out of business. I imagine it's available at most specialty and online stores. -Elizabeth -
ARCHIVED For $10/loaf It Should Be Fresh
brigala replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's what I do, too. As the only gluten-free person in my household, I have a hard time eating a whole loaf of bread (let alone 2) before it goes bad. I keep out about 1/3 of a loaf to eat "fresh" and slice, bag, and freeze the rest. I can't find a store-bought bread I can stand to eat, at any price. A few can be forced down in a pinch of baked with... -
ARCHIVED Must-try Restaurants In Eastern Los Angeles Area?
brigala posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm taking my husband to the Pepsi 500 for his birthday (shhh... he doesn't know yet). We'll be spending most of our weekend at the race track, and I'll be packing my meals, so I don't need a huge list of tolerable places to eat. But we can probably eat out once or twice if there's a super-duper Celiac-friendly restaurant we really need to try while we're... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Iphone Apps
brigala replied to GatorFan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So far, all the apps I have downloaded for my iPhone have been gluten free. I haven't been glutened by a single one! (sorry, I just couldn't resist)
