  1. It is also possible that he is sensitive to smaller amounts of gluten than Gemini is.
  2. A company called ELISA Technologies Inc, www.elisa-tek.com, offers EZ Gluten test kits which can be used at home to determine if a food or beverage contains gluten. You can get a pack of two for $25, or ten for $110, plus shipping. One person on this site used them to test 4 samples. Since they gave a negative result with wheat containing soy sauce,...
  3. I hear that you should use a pipe and not rolling papers as the adhesive contains gluten. Just in case.
  4. My son and I are both sensitive to very small amounts of gluten. We tried for a year to do a shared kitchen. That was without using any flour in cooking too. It was not possible. We kept getting sick until we went to a totally gluten free household. I can see how that won't be possible for you. Maybe you could get a dorm fridge, microwave, and toaster...
  5. I appreciate your concern for people on this site, especially new celiacs. For some celiacs, the 20 ppm limit on gluten free foods is not enough. We need our foods to be more free of gluten than that. This has been stated by my GI doc. Reading labels isn't enough for people like us. We need exclusive facilities, and sometimes we need to test things for...
  6. I guess it is a good thing that when my son was diagnosed at 10 he was super sick and throwing up 10 times a day. He would never eat gluten intentionally. My suggestion is to have plenty of gluten free treats around so that he is less likely to cheat. We just ordered some donuts from Kinnikinnick's and they are so good. (But expensive). With effort,...
  7. I think that there is a fear that we are like the canary in the coal mine. Or are they the ostrich with it's head in the sand? Is the food that they are eating really safe? They want to feel that it is and that we are crazy. The test that shows the presence of gluten in the food that they eat must be wrong. You must be a company plant to make money off...
  8. That happened to me with my son. There were two things that I suspected. I tested them both with twice the sample size. One was pizza and one was corn chips. The pizza I only tested the crust. Both tested negative, at twice the sample size that means less than 5 ppm. Then I looked at the pizza one again really carefully with a fluorescent light and...
  9. It is the EZ gluten. You can do things to make the test more sensitive such as adjusting the sample size, letting it run longer, and reading the card with a really good light and magnification, and rechecking it hours later. You don't get a number, but can estimate based on the changes that you make. To get a real number, you would have to run it with...
  10. I'll give you non sensitive people an idea of how it is to be sensitive. I made a new dish and it gave me stomach pains. I tested the ingredients that were new to find the source of my discomfort. The test showed the McCormicks ground cumin to be about 5 ppm gluten. That is well within the FDA 20 ppm required for the gluten free label. There were only...
  11. Thank you Mike M. Sometimes us sensitive types are really misunderstood.
  12. Everything I eat in a day is 100% safe. Fruit, vegetables, juice, booze, whole grains, everything in doubt tested. I got really tired of getting sick.
  13. I am so disappointed to have to report this. They make such a big deal about being a gluten free facility and then only test their incoming grain to 10 ppm! I ordered grain from them and tested it and it was positive at a level which would have made me sick. I guess I will have to grow my own! Beware, sensitive celiacs. At least I know now what was making...
  14. Those tests have been very helpful around here. I get them at www.elisa-tek.com. They are called EZ Gluten. They are expensive. They are only sensitive to 10 ppm, which isn't enough for us. There are some things that you can do to make them more sensitive. What you do is dissolve up your sample in a solution, wait for it to settle, take off some...
  15. I have been working on this same question for the last couple of months. I have been testing the grain I get with home test kits. With something like grain that you expect to be only contaminated on the outside you can use a large sample size and get down to 0.5 ppm or so. I haven't yet found a source for amaranth. Sorghum grain you can get from Twin...
  16. Thanks Raisin, and also to the more sensitive celiacs, when I looked at the test 9 hours later I could see a very faint positive. I spoke too soon about it being negative. I think I am going to try grinding my own.
  17. Arrowhead mills makes an organic cornmeal that says gluten free on the package. I also tested it with one of those home kits and it said that it was gluten free too.
  18. Gluten free pantry bread mix uses guar gum and not xanthan. You could use it without the yeast packet as a flour mix.
  19. My PMS symptoms went way down after I went gluten free. I used to get really irritable and irrational, and now I sometimes don't even know it is coming. Also my flow went way down. I read somewhere that PMS and heavy periods can be associated with celiac. I am also 49 so it could be menopause.. My mother died at 47 after going through chemotherapy induced...
  20. Some of those gluten free cereals have small amounts of gluten contamination. Why don't you try cutting that out and see if that helps? I found that celiac greatly affected my athletic ability and energy. It is a good idea to keep your diet really pure at first. Once you get healthy you can experiment with "gluten free" foods. A lot of people seem to...
  21. One more thing. Could you compare the EZ gluten with the Haven? Ease of use, sensitivity, cost... Where did you get the Haven? Thanks.
  22. That is very interesting that leaving it for longer can get a low positive result to show up. From now on, I will look again after longer. I did notice once that when I looked later, I saw a faint positive that I hadn't noticed before, but I thought I just hadn't looked hard enough before. I think weak positives show up better under fluorescent light...
  23. I got sick from Lundberg rice crackers, but I read here somewhere that they are made on a nondedicated line and everything else is made on a dedicated line. I have heard that citrus is sometimes coated with that wheat containing shelf life extender. I have nothing to back it up, just rumor, but maybe that was it. Were the lemons peeled?
